VLC definitively needs a "simple" preferences window. Here is a list of some of the settings which would be needed:

- default interface
- one instance mode (win32 only)
- hotkeys
- video settings:
- output module -- Disagree. Only needs to be modified in case of problems -- User:Zorglub
- overlay
- aspect ratio (?)
- skip frames
- snapshot stuff (at least so that users can see that it goes to My Pictures ?
- ffmpeg-hq ?
- audio settings:

- audio device
- subtitles settings:

- size
