You can install VLC using the apt-get programme (or it's GUI, Synaptic). Make sure you [https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu enabled the Universe repository] and type the following:

Look out: there are many deprecated vlc based packages, like gnome-vlc, etc. Just installing vlc will do.

  vlc-plugin-alsa    - ALSA audio output plugin for VLC (install it if sound doesn't work)
