PulseAudio is a sound daemon/sound server created by freedesktop.org for GNU/Linux (Windows ports exist but are heavily out-of-date). It aims to be an extensible, network-capable sound server that manages audio in a fast and efficient way. VLC media player supports PulseAudio input and output.
