Installing VLC on Ubuntu GNU/Linux

You can install VLC using the apt-get program (or it's GUI, Synaptic). Make sure you enabled the Universe repository and type the following:

 $ sudo apt-get install vlc

Look out: there are many deprecated vlc based packages, like gnome-vlc, etc. Just installing vlc will do.

Many vlc plugins can be installed afterwards (some of these may no longer be needed):[Please check this]

 vlc-plugin-alsa - ALSA audio output plugin for VLC (install it if sound doesn't work)
 vlc-plugin-arts - aRts audio output plugin for VLC (install it if sound still doesn't work and you're using KDE)
 vlc-plugin-esd - Esound audio output plugin for VLC (install it if sound still doesn't work and you're using Gnome)
 vlc-plugin-ggi - GGI video output plugin for VLC
 vlc-plugin-glide - Glide video output plugin for VLC
 vlc-plugin-pulse - PulseAudio audio output plugin for VLC
 vlc-plugin-sdl - SDL video and audio output plugin for VLC
 vlc-plugin-svgalib - SVGAlib video output plugin for VLC
 mozilla-plugin-vlc - the VLC plugin for Mozilla based browsers

Troubleshooting

Separate video window

In Ubuntu 9.04, the video is always rendered in a separate window. This does not affect other Ubuntu releases. Update to Ubuntu 9.10 if this is a problem for you.

Audio problems

If you have audio problems after upgrading Ubuntu, reboot. Your kernel might need to be refreshed.
