I am very interested in having a bitmap overlay feature in VLC. Can I help? Can I test it on my PC?

I have some experience with DirectX and a little experience with Video Overlay Mixer 9 (filter with windows)

Could this potentially be used to overlay text onto a video, or will it primarily be for 'rectangular' images?
