Windows Media Video is not built solely on Microsoft in-house technology. From version 7 (WMV1), Microsoft has used its own non-standard version of [[MPEG-4]] Part 2.

Windows Media is often generated using Microsoft's proprietary [[Windows Media Video 9 VCM]] software for Windows.

Microsoft has submitted Version 9 codec to the [[wikipedia:Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers|Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers]] (SMPTE), for approval as an international standard. The Trial version of standards were published by SMPTE in September 2005. A reference decoder implementation and test sequences are also available. Because VLC is a great and free tool, it decodes many formats and can be embed in web pages. We can look into its source code to understand better how we can take advantage of it. First compile attempts are more difficult than further ones, mainly because of missing third-party packages.
You can get a list of those packages here : [[Contrib_Status]]

The proper way to compile is described in many places ([[UnixCompile |boostrap, configure, make, make install]]). At configure stage, you can be informed of missing needed packages. You should look its output to find many problem origins.

I suggest you to store its output to a file. Like this you will be able to get a look at ".. no" ending lines at anytime. To do such, you can use "tee" command on linux (it archive a copy of the output to a file) :
./configure --all --your --args=here | tee my_configure.out

When a package is missing, saying for example "ffmpeg/avcodec.h", you have to find a package about it (in fact libavcodec-dev in this case)...

On debian based distros, you can find libavcodec-dev in those ways :
apt-cache search avcodec
# or with a graphic tool:
synaptic
and you can install this package in those ways (with root privileges) :
apt-get install libavcodec-dev
# or with a graphic tool:

* wine-dev (only needed to work on ActiveX API, IDL cross compiler)

What about gettext? Only release 0.16.1 is available, even in backports. For now I have modified configure.ac in this way:

instead of 0.17.

NB : You can use backport inside synaptic GUI through "force version" menu item.

Recently, I have had a problem running mozilla plug-in. It was because for libvlcplugin.so, ld never tries to find symbol XpmReadFileToImage into the right lib (libXpm.so). Here is a workaround which have worked for me :

2- vi /etc/ld.so.preload
3- if the file is empty then
add /usr/lib/libXpm.so
else
append /usr/lib/libXpm.so to its content. each libs must be separated by a space

==Abstract==

Unlike Windows and Linux, Mac OS X does not offer much in terms of alternatives to its built-in QuickTime media player. VLC media player represents the only Mac media player with significant support for various media formats and a tight integration with the OS, including a "Mac-like" user interface. As it is the only full, viable alternative to QuickTime on the Mac OS X platform, it is important that it stay current with various Mac technologies to offer users a comprehensive option for media playback.

Aspects of tighter Mac OS X integration:
*Quick Look Generator for Leopard (to generate thumbnails and full media previews from the Finder)
*Making most common preferences accessible in a Mac-style preference window organized with icon tabs across the top such as in Safari and Mail.
*Moving the Readme document and other help resources into a HelpViewer HTML document to allow better help searching in Leopard.
*Improvements in steaming server wizard to be more in-line with other Mac wizards and easier to use for personal streaming between Macs.
*Add better support for package files that contain media VLC can play, such as iMovie Projects and EyeTV recordings.
*Update the VLC file icons to the 512 by 512 size for Leopard.

==Detailed Description==

This project will use the libraries provided by Apple for creating a Quick Look Generator. Due to various restrictions placed on these by Apple, the method for generating the live preview may use the mozilla plugin if no better alternative can be found. Creating these enhancements will require a combination of C and Objective-C. The Quick Look function should generate a thumbnail when simply browsing the Finder or viewing with CoverFlow and should provide full playback when the spacebar is pressed (which actually opens the Quick View). For those not familiar with the details of Mac OS X, Apple provides very specific models for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) defined in documents on their [http://developer.apple.com developer site]. In addition to providing the Quick Look functionality, I will be attempting to bring VLC more in line with these usability guidelines. This will include updating the preferences window to have a more Mac OS X feel and organization to it for at least the most fundamental set of preferences (with the rest to be accessible in the traditional way). I will also be moving some of the documentation into HelpViewer format to allow easy searching of it directly from the menu bar in Leopard. Also, I will be designing a new Streaming/Transcoding Wizard that better matches the Mac OS X wizard look and feel, such as the in the Bluetooth Setup Assistant or Network Setup Assistant. The new icons should look more like other modern Mac OS X file icons since the current ones more closely resemble icons found in the Mac OS X Public Beta. These new icons should be included for several of the formats that are newer to VLC (and were not supported when the old icons were made) and should differentiate between types (audio vs. video) in the icon style.

==Graphical Interface==
Many people who want to use [[VLC media player]] on Mac OS X will be intending to use the standard graphical interface that is provided by vlc. The standard interface consists of the eight menus in the menu bar and the 'VLC - Controller' window that opens up by default. This section outlines what vlc can do for you (at V0.8.6a current active is V{{VLC:latest version}}) and will be completed as I check the use of menu options.

The eight menu bar options are listed below along with the main interesting capabilities under each menu item:

First compile attempts are more difficult than further ones, mainly because of missing third-party packages.

The proper way to compile is described in many places ([[UnixCompile |boostrap, configure, make, make install]]). At configure stage, you can be informed of missing needed packages. You should look its output to find many problem origins.

Recently, I have had a problem running mozilla plug-in. It was because for libvlcplugin.so, ld never tries to find symbol XpmReadFileToImage into the right lib (libXpm.so). Here is a workaround which have worked for me :

1- su # ask for root console
2- vi /etc/ld.so.preload
3- if the file is empty then
add /usr/lib/libXpm.so
else
append /usr/lib/libXpm.so to its content. each libs must be separated by a space

4- close vi (ESC : w q)

: VLC supports .rm/.ram in 2 ways. If you use Windows and have RealPlayer installed, VLC will try to use RealPlayer's DLLs to play the file. Otherwise, it will use [[ffmpeg]] to decode these files (which is included in vlc unless you compiled it yourself). From source code comments and ffmpeg's website, vlc appears to support "RealVideo 1.0 / 1.3 / 2.0", and "RealAudio 1.0".
: As far as I can tell, the way the system works is that a website publishes a .ram file, which is actually a text file containing an internet address. RealPlayer then opens this address, which is to the actual file, which is usually accessed over an RTSP connection. If VLC can't play the file, it's usually because it doesn't understand the latest RTSP commands.

== Performant VLC streaming server ==

There are many bottlenecks currently limiting the performance and scalability of VLC as a streaming server:

*The I/O blocks are linear, which implies lots of avoidable memory copying and dynamic memory allocations (particularly in the streaming output).
*mdate() (the timestamping function) is invoked in too many places to count them; but it is not a cheap operation on modern systems and should be avoided on the fast path. Ideally, a single thread would only need to call mdate() at most once per wake-up. In some case, mdate() is only used for debugging purpose which is really inefficient.
*The HTTP/RTSP core is single-threaded. This prevents scaling to SMP systems (which are the norm on server-side nowadays) properly. This also implies not very scalable I/O event polling. Finally, this gets problematic if one HTTP/RTSP client triggers a computationally intensive operation (such as establishing a TLS context if HTTP/SSL is used).
*There are many dynamic memory allocations that could be avoided. Video filters and codecs are very careful about this, but the stream output plugins are not. In many case, a stack-based buffer can be used (stack buffer, has constant time fast lock-less allocation, and needs not be freed explicitly) instead.
*The messaging subsystems might be adding more locking (needs checking); this should be avoided particularly if the message is anyway ignord (e.g. debug message in non-debug mode).

Other improvements that would be particularly benefitial on the server side:

*Memory allocation failure are not always duly handled. In some cases, that could potentially be leveraged by a client to crash a VLC server by causing a very large allocation attempt.
*Rewrite and revive the root wrapper to allow VLC to bind to the RTSP (554) port while not retaining root privileges.

Hello, I would like to present their concept idea, it involves interaction with online services and some changes in the user interface of VLC Media Player.

On the first tab (Movie) is very straightforward, a user inserts a DVD, HD-DVD or BlyRay selects the desired slot and begin viewing.
In the future it will be possible to implement view of the disk image.

The second tab (Video), makes it possible to watch media files directly from the HDD.
Setting up a profile can be all sorted by category (Films, TV shows, etc.), the category of Films on (Action, Horror, Camedy), the category of TV show on (Lost, House M. D, X-Files), etc.
After watching a movie or TV show, you can not closing VLC media player immediately to share impressions with your friends on Twitter, MySpace, Facebook.

The third tab (Music), provides an opportunity to listen to music as a straight line from the HDD.
Similar to the previous tab, everything can be sorted into categories (Hip-Hop, R'n'B, Dance, Rock).

Another idea is to tab Online TV, where you can make a small internet browser tied to popular online Servas (YouTube) and send links to interesting videos to friends directly from the VLC Player.

Set up Yum Repositories such as Livna http://rpm.livna.org etc.After you have followed the instructions there.

[root@x32.fedora.prudhvi.in]# yum install vlc

will install VLC Media Player.

If you have any issues inputting from an external device to the "line-in" under Redhat, be sure to check the /etc/.aumixrc file. By default, it doesn't contain an entry for recording from the line-in device. Add one and reload the mixer settings (the command can be found in /etc/modules.conf) and you're good to go.

Then you must set a symbolic link for postproc. This took me a long time to spot.

Please send along the last part of ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/VLC.crash.log if you can. Many crashes of VLC are logged in this file. You can open the file from VLC by going to the menu Window and choosing Messages. Now click the "Open CrashLog" button.
Please make sure you send the last crash (at the bottom of the file) and that it actually is the crash you described. The Date/Time field reports the time of the crash so that way you can check if it is the crash you experienced, or an earlier one.

== Description ==

The MediaControl API is a generic Media player API. The idea is to define a generic video-player API, that could be reused with other players. It is implemented in VLC by using the [[ExternalAPI#VLC_Control|New libvlc API]], and both APIs can cooperate (i.e. you can instanciate a MediaControl object from an existing libvlc instance, and vice-versa).

Its core part (playback control) has been taken from the [http://www.omg.org/docs/formal/00-01-03.pdf OMG Audio/Video Stream specification], and extended with additional functionalities. An [http://liris.cnrs.fr/advene/download/MediaControl.idl IDL specification MediaControl.idl] has been the base of this work.

The following evolutions should be integrated in the API, but discussion is necessary to ensure that they are sufficiently flexible to match various needs :
* sound_[sg]et_volume: normalize volume in [0..100]
* implement get_api_version() or get_capabilities() (which would return the list of capabilities supported by the player: ("core", "svg", "snapshot", etc)
* Complete the implementation. For instance, the frame-by-frame unit (mediacontrol_SampleCount) is not implemented, and the stop/pause do not take the Position parameter into account (they are applied immediately).
* Fix VLC initialization on Win32 so that it uses the registry key to find the default plugins directory by default. Currently, it uses the vlc.exe path, which it cannot find when using VLC embedded. A workaround is to chdir to the vlc.exe directory before instanciating the MediaControl() object.
