==How to store streaming station presets==

To use VLC as a streaming client, store your station presets under the Media Library on the Playlist panel (''not'' the bookmarks and ''not'' the actual playlist itself).
#Open the playlist panel (Ctrl-L or click on the Playlist button).
#Click on the Plus button at the bottom of the panel. (A dropdown menu will appear.)
#Select "Advanced Open" from the dropdown menu. (A new panel, named Open Media, will appear.)
#Select the "Networking" tab on the Open Media panel.
#Enter the full URL of the streaming station in the Address field. e.g. http://mystation.org:8000/mystream.ogg
#Click the Enqueue button at the bottom of the panel.

==How to associate media files to VLC==
:''See also: [[How_to_make_VLC_the_default_player#Windows|How to make VLC the default player]].''

This should be done through the VLC settings interface, choose "Tools | Preferences " and then click on the "Set up Associations..." button.
Select any file extension that you wish to open with VLC, then click "Apply". This should change all media files icons to the VLC cone, and double-clicking any of them should open VLC and immediately start playing the media.

If this seems to have no effect on the UI, and/or double-clicking the file icon does not start VLC, check that you have correctly set Windows preferences through "Start | Default Programs" (on Vista; see the relevant item on Windows XP or newer Windows OS; possibly this is not applicable to Windows 2000).
In that UI click on "Set default programs", select the "VLC media player" item and check the description (it will usually say "All default settings for this program are active"). Then choose your own course of actions by either clicking on "Set this program as default" or "Choose default settings for this program".

Other ways to achieve the same effects are as follows (not really recommended).

===Use Windows Explorer's context menu===

#In Windows Explorer, ''right''-click a file you wish to open.
#Click "Open With" in the context menu that pops up.
#Click "VLC media player" to use VLC just this once, or click "Default program..."
#Click the name of the program (VLC) which you want to be used to open the file.
#*If VLC is not displayed, click Browse to locate it on your hard drive.

Alternatively:
#In Windows Explorer, ''right''-click the file you want to open with VLC.
#Click Properties in the context menu that pops up.
#On the General tab, click Change.
#Click the name of the program (VLC) which you want to be used to open the file.

Either of these options affects all files that have the same filename extension (the letters after the filename's period) as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens ''goober.avi'', then all ''.avi'' files will be opened with VLC.

===Rerun the installer===
#Reinstall VLC and choose the "associate files" option when it comes up. ''Please note'' that on Vista and newer OSes this will not cure the "Windows Media Player won't go away" symptom, and you should go the "Set default program" route instead, as described above.

===Edit the registry===
'''''Warning''''': this instruction set is outdated and should ''not'' be used. Direct registry editing should be avoided anyway unless you're desperate and you really ''really'' know what you're doing.

'''Warning''': use this technique only if you really know what you are doing! And be sure to back-up your registry first.

#Open a text editor, like Notepad (but not WordPad).
#Copy this text below.
#Modify the strings ''C:\\Program Files\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe'' to match your VLC installation.
#Save as ''vlc.reg''.
#Execute ''vlc.reg'' (adding this data to your registry).
#Enjoy VLC :)

'''Note''': This associates ''asf'', ''asx'', ''avi'', ''divx'', ''mpeg'', ''mpg'', ''vob'' and ''wmv'' files. If you get the idea, you can associate any file you want.

==How To Start VLC Server with http Interface==
VLC ships with a little HTTP server integrated. It is used both to stream using HTTP, and for the HTTP remote control interface.

===Step 1: VLC Server Preferences Settings===
1. Set up the http interface details in the VLC server application: Open VLC, then select Tools > Preferences. In the bottom left corner of the window, under "Show settings", click "All".

2. In the left hand menu click on the + button next to Interface. This will display three choices. Control interfaces, Hotkeys settings, and Main Interfaces. Click "Main Interfaces". Select "HTTP remote control interface".

3. Click on the plus button next to "Main interfaces". This will display four settings HTTP, Qt, RC, Skins. Click on HTTP to display the "HTTP remote control interface" settings.

4. Host address: Enter the port number that you want to use. Default is 8080.

5. Source directory: If you have installed VLC in a different folder than the default, enter '''path\to\VLC\'''\http.

6. If you are NOT using handlers or SSL certificates the setup is complete.

7. Click on the Save button in the lower right hand of the window.

8. If needed, edit the .hosts file in the vlc/http directory. By default only "localhost" is allowed, edit to enable other hosts.

9. Exit and restart VLC

===Step 2: Command Line Startup===

The VLC appplication can be run in a server or client environment. For complicated
video and audio streaming on a LAN, one should consider dedicating a machine to act
as the VLC server.

To start the VLC application in a server mode with the http interface automatically
set, use the following command line in your desktop shortcut. This assumes the default
location for installation was selected.

<nowiki>"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --extraintf http --intf wx</nowiki>

===Step 3: Testing the Interface===

From another computer, connect to the VLC server computer using your browser to the URL

<nowiki>http://server_ip_address:8080, such as http://192.168.0.186:8080</nowiki>

The Main VLC Interface page will be displayed,

See [[Web_Interface]] for additional information

==VLC Plugin for Internet Explorer==

This section will provide guidelines to incorporate the VLC ActiveX plugin to be used to view streaming audio and video from a VLC server.

How to embed the ActiveX Plugin in a Web Page: [[ActiveX/HTML]]

Supported ActiveX Function Calls: [[ActiveX]]

==VLC Plugin for Firefox (Mozilla)==
The Mozilla plugin
(Excerpted from the [[Documentation:Play_HowTo/Advanced_Use_of_VLC#The_Mozilla_plugin|VLC User Guide]])

'''Install'''

There are at least two ways to install the VLC Mozilla Plugin. One way is to to check the "Install Firefox Plugin" when you install VLC.

If the standard exe installation does not install the mozilla plugin directory then download zip version which includes the required data and continue with the next installation (2nd way of installing of the plugin)

The second way involves several steps:

1. Quit Firefox or Mozilla

2. Copy the two files in VLC_Installation_folder\mozilla (usually C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\mozilla) to your mozilla plugins directory (Usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla\plugins or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins).

3. Restart Firefox or Mozilla

=== Use the Mozilla plugin ===

If in the browser you open a link to an audio or video URL handled by the VLC plugin, or if a web page has HTML code that embeds audio or video handled by the VLC plugin, then the plugin should start and play the audio/video.
Note the plugin (as of version 1.1.9) does not present any user interface — it has no default control panel and no keyboard shortcuts.

To get the list of the media types handled by the VLC plugin, browse to '''about:plugins'''.
Conflicts will arise if you have more than one plugin installed that supports the same media type.

See the [[Documentation:WebPlugin|Web plugin documentation]] to create HTML pages that use JavaScript to control the plugin.

More example code, as well as a working implementation using Javascript, XHTML, and PHP that auto-detects browsers (the code is good, but the stream doesn't work) can be found at http://altair.videolan.org/~dionoea/vlc-plugin-demo/ ''(broken as of 2011-09-04)''
== Portable VLC ==
A version of VLC in a portable format exists. It is useful, for example, if you want to put it on a USB stick and use it on computers you don't own. It can also be very useful on your own computer: if you have to reinstall Windows, you won't need to reinstall VLC, it will be up and running almost instantly:
===XP===

Perhaps the easiest way is to set VLC as the default media player for Windows is [[Documentation:Play_HowTo/Installing_VLC|during the installation of VLC]]. As odd as it might sound, removing VLC from your programmes and then re-installing it will be the safest method for many people. All the file types are automatically selected, which you can change as desired.

During installation, just make certain that you clear any box that would cause the installer to delete your preferences and cache.

===Vista, 7, 8===

Open VLC player, click on '''Tools''' in menu, select '''Preferences'''.

[[Image:Tools-menu-item.png]]

Click on the '''Interface''' button on left panel and then click on '''Set up associations...''' (it's close to the bottom).

[[Image:Preferences-dialogue.png]]

Select types of files from the list that appears, and anyone need to use with VLC player as default, or "select all"

[[Image:set-programme-associations.png]]

== Mac ==
Right click on the type of file you want to always open in VLC. Click 'Get Info'. In the 'Open With' section, select VLC from the drop down menu. To apply this change to all files of this type, click the 'Change All' button.

== Linux ==

=== Fedora ===

==== GNOME ====

Gnome uses two lists (located at '''''/usr/share/applications/''''') '''mimeinfo.cache''' and '''defaults.list''', to register applications to file types.
So you could either edit it manually or use the tools that GNOME has for this.
===== Changing the default application for videos using menus(the easy way): =====

Using Nautilus 2.30.1, from the top menu bar choose Places then Home Folder -> Edit menu -> Preferences -> choose Media tab -> in drop down list next to "DVD Video" choose "Open VLC media player". Voila.

Alternatively try: System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Preferred Applications -> Multimedia -> Custom -> Type this: vlc %U

===== Changing the default application for videos manually(the hard way): =====

In Fedora 10 the path /usr/share/applications/ will take you to these 2 files that configure what application open a type of file.

'''defaults.list'''
'''mimeinfo.cache'''

ps:
Both files will point to a Desktop Entry file([name of the file].desktop) that is inside the ''applications'' folder, and the 2 important things inside that file are the configurations for what MIME Types the application can handle and how to launch the application.

A ''Desktop Entry'' file is a data file that provides information about an item in a menu.
The desktop entry specification describes desktop entries as files describing information about an application such as the name, MIME Types it handles, icon, and description. These files are used for application launchers and for creating menus of applications that can be launched.
If you don't have the VLC ''Desktop Entry'' file or it disapear for some reason you will have to make one. Look [http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/menustructure-desktopentry.html.en here] for some pointers.
You only need to modify '''mimeinfo.cache''', I hope. It works here if It don't work for you please edit this.
So what you have to do is:

# Open ''mimeinfo.cache'' as root.
# Search for the MIME Types for video.
# Change all of them to use VLC.

ex:
Registry of MIME Type (video/quicktime) in ''mimeinfo.cache'' to use VLC.

video/quicktime=livna-vlc.desktop;totem.desktop;miro.desktop;

The format is:
[MIME Type]=[Name of the Desktop Entry file]

'''Note:''' You can put more then one ''Desktop Entry'' but they need to be separated by a semi-colon (;), see the example above.
Those extra entries will appear as options when you right-click on the video file and go to the ''Open With'' submenu.
'''Tip:''' Nautilus don't show the real names of the ''Desktop Entry'' files. Either drag and drop it on gedit so you see the name on the tab or use '''ls''' to list the files on the command line.
====Recommended====

The normal and recommended way to install VLC for Windows is via the installer package.

'''Step 0: Download and launch installer'''

Download the installer package from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html VLC download page for Windows]. Once that's done, double click on it to begin the install process. If you're using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 and have UAC enabled, you may be prompted to grant the programme administrator permissions. Clicking '''Yes''' will allow you to continue.

'''Step 1: Select installer language'''

Before you can continue, you have select the language that you want the installer to be displayed in. It is usually a good idea to select one that you can understand.

'''Step 2: Welcome screen'''

Like millions of people before you, your love affair with VLC begins with an ominous warning about closing all other applications before installing it. You can just go ahead and click '''Next'''.

[[Image:Step-2-welcome.png]]

'''Step 3: Licence agreement'''

You should thinking about read the Terms of Service prior to clicking '''Next'''. It talks about your rights and stuff... I think.

[[Image:Step-3-licence.png]]

'''Step 4: Select components'''

This menu provides you with the ability to customise your install. You choose all the components you wish to install and whether you want VLC to be your default media player or not. Once you are done, feel free to click '''Next'''.

[[Image:Step-4-components.png]]

'''Step 5: Pick a location'''

You choose the installation folder with '''Browse...''' and when you are ready you click '''Install'''.

[[Image:Step-5-install-location.png]]

'''Step 5: Now installing'''

Wait as VLC begins installing. It shouldn't take too long. You may click on the "Show details" if you must. Once clicked, however, there is no going back so choose wisely.

[[Image:Step-6-installing.png]]

'''Step 7: Installation complete'''

Once installation is completed, you may choose to run VLC, read a bunch of boring release notes, or do nothing at all. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.

[[Image:Step-7-completed.png]]

====Alternative====

If you want to be pro and perform an unattended (or silent) installation of VLC, you can do so via a command line interface. Just type in "filename" /L="languagecode" /S. For example, the English installation would look something like '''vlc-2.0.1-win32.exe /L=1033 /S'''.

'''PowerShell'''

Installing VLC using PowerShell is as easy as pie.

'''Command Prompt'''

You can also do it using the command prompt... if that's your thing.
===2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8===

====Recommended====

The normal and recommended way to install VLC for Windows is via the installer package.

'''Download and launch installer'''

Download the installer package from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html VLC download page for Windows]. Once that's done, double click on it to begin the install process. If you're using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 and have UAC enabled, you may be prompted to grant the programme administrator permissions. Clicking '''Yes''' will allow you to continue.

'''Step 1: Select installer language'''

Before you can continue, you have select the language that you want the installer to be displayed in. It is usually a good idea to select one that you can understand.

[[Image:Step-1-select-language.png]]

'''Step 2: Welcome screen'''

Like millions of people before you, your love affair with VLC begins with an ominous warning about closing all other applications before installing it. You can just go ahead and click '''Next'''.

'''Step 3: Licence agreement'''

You should thinking about read the Terms of Service prior to clicking '''Next'''. It talks about your rights and stuff... I think.

'''Step 4: Select components'''
There are VLC binaries available for the many OSes, but not for all supported ones. If there are no binaries for your OS or if you want to change the default settings, you can compile VLC from sources.
== [[Image:Windows logo2.jpg|100x100px]] Windows ==

===95, 98, ME===

You can run it under Windows 95, 98 or ME by using [http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page KernelEx].

===2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8===

''' Select installer language'''

Before you can continue, you have select the language that you want the installer to be displayed in. It is usually a good idea to select one that you can understand.

Like millions of people before you, your love affair with VLC begins with an ominous warning about closing all other applications before installing it. You can just go ahead and click '''Next'''.

===Windows XP===

===Windows Vista, 7 and 8===

== Mac ==
Right click on the type of file you want to always open in VLC. Click 'Get Info'. In the 'Open With' section, select VLC from the drop down menu. To apply this change to all files of this type, click the 'Change All' button.
== Linux ==
==== GNOME ====
So you could either edit it manually or use the tools that GNOME has for this.

# Change all of them to use VLC.

ex:
Registry of MIME Type (video/quicktime) in ''mimeinfo.cache'' to use VLC.

video/quicktime=livna-vlc.desktop;totem.desktop;miro.desktop;

'''Windows XP'''

Perhaps the easiest way is to set VLC as the default media player for Windows is [[Documentation:Play_HowTo/Installing_VLC|during the installation of VLC]]. As odd as it might sound, removing VLC from your programmes and then re-installing it will be the safest method for many people. All the file types are automatically selected, which you can change as desired.

During installation, just make certain that you clear any box that would cause the installer to delete your preferences and cache.

'''Windows Vista, 7 and 8'''

Open VLC player, click on '''Tools''' in menu, select '''Preferences'''.

[[Image:Tools-menu-item.png]]

Click on the '''Interface''' button on left panel and then click on '''Set up associations...''' (it's close to the bottom).

[[Image:Preferences-dialogue.png]]

Select types of files from the list that appears, and anyone need to use with VLC player as default, or "select all"

[[Image:set-programme-associations.png]]

== Mac ==
Right click on the type of file you want to always open in VLC. Click 'Get Info'. In the 'Open With' section, select VLC from the drop down menu. To apply this change to all files of this type, click the 'Change All' button.

== Linux ==

=== Fedora ===

==== GNOME ====

Gnome uses two lists (located at '''''/usr/share/applications/''''') '''mimeinfo.cache''' and '''defaults.list''', to register applications to file types.
So you could either edit it manually or use the tools that GNOME has for this.

===Use Windows Explorer's context menu===

===Rerun the installer===
#Reinstall VLC and choose the "associate files" option when it comes up. ''Please note'' that on Vista and newer OSes this will not cure the "Windows Media Player won't go away" symptom, and you should go the "Set default program" route instead, as described above.

===Edit the registry===

==How To Start VLC Server with http Interface==
VLC ships with a little HTTP server integrated. It is used both to stream using HTTP, and for the HTTP remote control interface.

===Step 1: VLC Server Preferences Settings===

===Step 2: Command Line Startup===

===Step 3: Testing the Interface===

From another computer, connect to the VLC server computer using your browser to the URL

<nowiki>http://server_ip_address:8080, such as http://192.168.0.186:8080</nowiki>

The Main VLC Interface page will be displayed,

See [[Web_Interface]] for additional information

==VLC Plugin for Internet Explorer==

==VLC Plugin for Firefox (Mozilla)==

More example code, as well as a working implementation using Javascript, XHTML, and PHP that auto-detects browsers (the code is good, but the stream doesn't work) can be found at http://altair.videolan.org/~dionoea/vlc-plugin-demo/ ''(broken as of 2011-09-04)''
== Portable VLC ==
A version of VLC in a portable format exists. It is useful, for example, if you want to put it on a USB stick and use it on computers you don't own. It can also be very useful on your own computer: if you have to reinstall Windows, you won't need to reinstall VLC, it will be up and running almost instantly:
'''During installation'''

== Mac ==
Right click on the type of file you want to always open in VLC. Click 'Get Info'. In the 'Open With' section, select VLC from the drop down menu. To apply this change to all files of this type, click the 'Change All' button.

== Linux ==

=== Fedora ===

==== GNOME ====

Gnome uses two lists (located at '''''/usr/share/applications/''''') '''mimeinfo.cache''' and '''defaults.list''', to register applications to file types.
So you could either edit it manually or use the tools that GNOME has for this.
===== Instructions on how to do it in GNOME. =====

Voila.

Alternatively try: System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Preferred Applications -> Multimedia -> Custom -> Type this: vlc %U

ps: this alternative not tested yet.

===== Changing the default application for videos using menus(the not so easy way): =====

{| class="wikitable"
| * Right-click on the video file that you want VLC to open.
* Choose properties.
* Now in the properties window click on the tab named '''''Open With'''''.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/59/Properties_window.png/800px-Properties_window.png
|-
|
* In the tab '''''Open With''''' just choose VLC as your player for that type of file.
Just remember that you will have to do this for each an every type of video/audio file('''ex:''' mpg, avi, rm, mkv, ogg, mp3 etc)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6b/Open_with_tab.png/800px-Open_with_tab.png
|
* If the VLC icon don't show up on the '''''Open With''''' tab, click on the '''''add''''' button in the lower corner to the right of the window
tha has a plus sign, and locate VLC on the window tha pops up that is called Add Application.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/Add_app.png
|}

# Change all of them to use VLC.

ex:
Registry of MIME Type (video/quicktime) in ''mimeinfo.cache'' to use VLC.

video/quicktime=livna-vlc.desktop;totem.desktop;miro.desktop;

==== GNOME ====

# Change all of them to use VLC.

ex:
Registry of MIME Type (video/quicktime) in ''mimeinfo.cache'' to use VLC.

video/quicktime=livna-vlc.desktop;totem.desktop;miro.desktop;

There are VLC binaries available for the many OSes, but not for all supported ones. If there are no binaries for your OS or if you want to change the default settings, you can compile VLC from sources.

== [[Image:Windows logo2.jpg|100x100px]] Windows ==

{{VLC}} is compatible and works under Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. You can also run it under Windows 95, 98 or ME by using [http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page KernelEx].

'''Download and launch the installer'''

Download the installer package from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html VLC download page for Windows]. Once that's done, double click on it to begin the install process. If you're using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 and have UAC enabled, you may be prompted to grant the programme administrator permissions. Clicking '''Yes''' will allow you to continue.

''' Select installer language'''

Before you can continue, you have select the language that you want the installer to be displayed in. It is usually a good idea to select one that you can understand.
'''Welcome screen'''

Like millions of people before you, your love affair with VLC begins with an ominous warning about closing all other applications before installing it. You can just go ahead and click '''Next'''.

'''Select components'''

This menu provides you with the ability to customise your install. You choose all the components you wish to install and whether you want VLC to be your default media player or not. Once you are done, feel free to click '''Next'''.

'''Pick a location'''

You choose the installation folder with '''Browse...''' and when you are ready you click '''Install'''.

'''Now installing'''

Wait as VLC begins installing. It shouldn't take too long. You may click on the "Show details" if you must. Once clicked, however, there is no going back so choose wisely.

'''Installation complete'''

Once installation is completed, you may choose to run VLC, read a bunch of boring release notes, or do nothing at all. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.

'''Silent installation'''

If you want to be pro and perform an unattended (or silent) installation of VLC, you can do so via PowerShell. Just type in "filename" /L="languagecode" /S. For example, the English installation would look something like '''vlc-2.0.1-win32.exe /L=1033 /S'''.

[[Image:Step-8-silent-installation-ps.png]]

You can also do it using the command prompt if that's your thing.

=== Fedora ===

==== GNOME ====

Voila.

Alternatively try: System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Preferred Applications -> Multimedia -> Custom -> Type this: vlc %U

ps: this alternative not tested yet.

===== Changing the default application for videos using menus(the not so easy way): =====

{| class="wikitable"
| * Right-click on the video file that you want VLC to open.
* Choose properties.
* Now in the properties window click on the tab named '''''Open With'''''.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/59/Properties_window.png/800px-Properties_window.png
|
|}

# Change all of them to use VLC.

ex:
Registry of MIME Type (video/quicktime) in ''mimeinfo.cache'' to use VLC.

video/quicktime=livna-vlc.desktop;totem.desktop;miro.desktop;

There are VLC binaries available for the many OSes, but not for all supported ones. If there are no binaries for your OS or if you want to change the default settings, you can compile VLC from sources.

== [[Image:Windows logo2.jpg|100x100px]] Windows ==

{{VLC}} is compatible and works under Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8. You can also run it under Windows 95/98/Me by using [http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page KernelEx].

#Download the self-extracting package (or the 7-Zip/zip package, which requires an extraction first) from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html VLC Windows download page].
#Launch the '''.exe''' to install VLC.
#Follow the steps in the installer.

- Select the language that you want the installer to be displayed in. It is usually a good idea to select one that you can understand.

[[Image:Step-1-select-language.png]]

- Your love affair with VLC will begin with an ominous warning about closing all other applications before installing it. You can just go ahead and click next.

[[Image:Step-2-welcome.png]]

- You read the terms of service and click "Next >" .

[[Image:Step-3-licence.png]]

-You choose the components you wish to install and click "Next >" .

[[Image:Step-4-components.png]]

-You choose the installation folder with "Browse..." and when you are ready you click "Install".

[[Image:Step-5-install-location.png]]

- Wait as VLC begins installing. You may click on the "Show details" if you must. Once clicked, however, there is no going back so choose wisely.

[[Image:Step-6-installing.png]]

- Once installation is completed, you may choose to run VLC, read a bunch of boring release notes, or do nothing at all. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.

[[Image:Step-7-completed.png]]

- If you want to be pro and perform an unattended (or silent) installation of VLC, you can do so via PowerShell. Just type in "filename" /L="languagecode" /S. For example, the English installation would look something like ''vlc-2.0.1-win32.exe /L=1033 /S''.

[[Image:Step-8-silent-installation-ps.png]]

- You can also do it using the command prompt if that's your thing.

#Double-click on the icon of the package: an icon will appear on your Desktop, right beside your drives.
#Open it and drag the VLC application from the resulting window to the place where you want to install it (it should be '''/Applications''').

There are VLC packages for Mandrake 9.1 and Cooker.

Thaiphan: Updated the Windows install instructions so that the experience represents that of the latest version of VLC.

{{RightMenu|documentation play howto toc}}

There are VLC binaries available for the many OSes, but not for all supported ones. If there are no binaries for your OS or if you want to change the default settings, you can compile VLC from sources.

== [[Image:Windows logo2.jpg|100x100px]] Windows ==

Unattended/silent installation: Use "filename" /L="languagecode" /S. Example for english installation: vlc-1.1.0-win32.exe /L=1033 /S

== [[Image:Apple-logo-300x300.jpg|100x100px]] Mac OS X ==

#Download the Mac OS X package from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html VLC MacOS X download page].
#Double-click on the icon of the package: an icon will appear on your Desktop, right beside your drives.
#Open it and drag the VLC application from the resulting window to the place where you want to install it (it should be '''/Applications''').

== Linux ==
=== [[Image:Beos-wallpapers 1334 1280x1024.png|150x150px]] BeOS ===

#Download the Zip file from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-beos.html VLC BeOS download page].
#Unzip the file in a directory to install VLC.
=== [[Image:Debian-logo.jpg|100x100px]] Debian ===

==== Debian stable (lenny) ====

Add the following lines to your '''/etc/apt/sources.list''':

'''deb''' http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian '''stable main'''
'''deb-src''' http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian '''stable main'''

Then, for a normal install, write the following commands in '''Terminal''':

# '''apt-get update'''
# '''apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2'''

==== Debian testing (squeeze) ====

You should not be using Debian testing unless you perfectly know what you are doing. It is almost impossible to support Debian testing and there are no plans to do it.

For more information on Debian testing, please look at the [http://www.debian.org/devel/testing Testing Page].

==== Debian unstable (sid) ====

Add the following lines to your '''/etc/apt/sources.list''':

'''deb''' http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian '''sid main'''
'''deb-src''' http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian '''sid main'''

Then, for a normal install, write the following commands in '''Terminal''':

# '''apt-get update'''
# '''apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2'''

=== Linux Mandrake [[Image:Mandrake-wave.png|100x100px]] ===

There are VLC packages for Mandrake 9.1 and Cooker.

To install them, add the following sources for either Mandrake 9.1 or Cooker (you can use [http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ Easy urpmi] for that): ''contrib'' from the core distribution and ''plf'' (Penguin Liberation Front) from the external add-ons.

Then install the required packages with '''urpmi''':

# '''urpmi libdvdcss2 libdvdplay0 wxvlc vlc-plugin-a52 vlc-plugin-ogg vlc-plugin-mad'''

=== [[Image:Centos.png|150x100px]] Linux (EL5) ===

1. Download and install the latest rpmforge-release rpm (eg rpmforge-release-0.3.6-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm)

2. Either;

# '''yum install vlc'''

or (if you have epel-release installed);

# '''yum --disablerepo='epel' install vlc'''
=== [[Image:Redhat2.jpg|100x100px]] Linux RedHat ===

Download the RPM package ''vlc'' and the packages listed in the ''required libraries and codecs'' section (the other packages are optional) from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-redhat.html VLC Red Hat download page] and put them all into the same directory.

Then install the RPM packages you have downloaded:

# '''rpm -U *.rpm'''

If you have not installed all the RPM packages included with your distribution, you may be asked to install a few of them first.

=== [[Image:Ubuntu-logo.png|100x100px]] Ubuntu ===

Go to Applications -> Sound &Video then in search VLC Player. After it will come click on it and it will automatically install

You need to check that a universe mirror is listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

% sudo apt-get update
% sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
== Compile the sources by yourself ==
