Let me be clear: WE NEED HELP.
I mean, jokes aside, the website are not very maintained, but I did my best to regroup them a bit.
Wiki
This wiki is out of date (I can update, just tell me what to update to)

It lacks extensions (tell me which ones to install)

It lacks correct group management (ideas are welcome)

It is still full of crap and need someone with good Wikimedia knowledge to bump it up.

Forum
The forum should be quite up-to-date (I don't trust phpBB security) and works quite correctly.

Trac
Trac is in a mess I can't describe... But well, we need a forge to do the same, and I haven't find one yet.

Main WWW
It needs some cleanup, some nice JS, some CSS improvements and some contents correction (VLC description sucks)

You can get the code on our svn, you know?

Authentication
We need some simple to manage identification that would work on phpBB, trac and wiki. Any good idea?

Well, to start, thanks for the response and I'll suggest the little I can...

Wiki
Rather than my own description, a more detailed explanation can be found here:

Manual:Upgrading (sorry for the external link, Interwiki links seem not to work here)

Upgrading makes sense, mainly for bug-fixes and security but also for the wealth of new features often introduced...

:: Upgrade done today to latest mediawiki jb 11:20, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

When it comes to extensions, I will have to think about which ones are relevant to this wiki and I will see if I can come back to you on that. In the meanwhile, perhaps some of the sysops around here could help?
:: We are a bit alone... I added the OpenID extension jb

::: Ah this is good to see. As you posted this message, I was in the process of writing a response to your above message about upgrading MediaWiki. I just successfully installed OpenID on my own private wiki as well to test its stability and was about to post the result when you mentioned that this is done. I will try and log in with my OpenID as soon as I finish this message and hopefully all is well! I just wanted to point out that the sidebar has a faulty link (sitesupport, under Immportant pages) and probably needs to be changed. Unfortunately, I can't quite place my finger on what was there but links to the Donations page on Wikimedia's wikis so perhaps that's where it should link to? Also, the icons from next to links seem to have disappeared. User:The_Thing? Tek 11:53, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

:::: Oh dear... It seems that every time I finish a message here, another is posted beneath and I start again. I am just going to post this before it gets overwritten again :D Tek 11:53, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

::::: Icons and CSS are back. OpenID still broken. DB tables weren't created jb 11:58, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

:::::: Hi, having had a look at the problem you mention, it is clear that the database hasn't been updated. The solution would be to run 'sudo php maintenance/update.php' in the mediawiki installation directory to update the database. This may take a few minutes...

::::::: Hurray! OpenID works!!!

:::::::: I manually created the tables, using the sql file, but yes, that works now. Issue closed. jb 12:32, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

In terms of group management, it makes sense for most of the pages on this wiki to be editable by anyone, as they are documentation and as such should be fine for anyone to edit.
However, it may make sense to use FlaggedRevs as does Wikinews and mark certain pages for approval or to simply do as with Wikipedia and just ask for volunteers to watch the documentation as it changes (Special:Recentchanges) and correct any notable errors.
This would probably not be inconceivable due to the low rate at which articles are currently updated here (a few a day).

As for good Wikimedia knowledge, while I certainly couldn't consider myself even vaguely qualified to help, I pick up on most things pretty quickly and have been managing my own private wiki for a few years and so may be able to help a little with the technical side of sorting out the wiki (e.g. templating, tidying up) if not necessarily the community side (though I have worked on/helped out with several small community run sites) as I know how Mediawiki works in a fair amount of detail. Once again however, perhaps some of the sysops I have seen around may know a fair bit about this?
:: So maybe add a power-user group? jb

::: Well, the in-house power-user group is usually sysops but it is quite possible, using wgGroupPermissions to add a power-user group with some, but not all sysop abilities. I could definitely help set that up if needed as I use wgGroupPermissions a lot myself... Perhaps a list could be made of which permissions they should have? This page should list all rights...

Forum
The forum appears to work beautifully and happily appears to be on the latest version of phpBB. Hurray!

Trac
While Trac does appear to be in a mess, it is certainly a brilliant and trusted bug tracking system, used by many projects and hence surely can't be impossible to get working again.

Unfortunately, of the mentioned systems, Trac is the one in which I have the least experience and hence without looking at it further myself, I couldn't really suggest much to be done.

When it comes to alternatives, Bugzilla is one, used by organisations such as the Linux kernel project, NASA and Facebook. However, if you wish to stick with Python, there is the excellent Roundup too.

However, it probably does make sense, rather than switching, to try and repair Trac and I will see if I can either have a look at it myself or find a friend with more experience with this bug tracker. Once again, I am sure there are some clear reasons for the errors involved.
:: Well I guess I'll have to hack on it manually. jb 11:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Main WWW
Hmm... I will definitely have a look but the sites already have a personality to them, which spreads beautifully across the multiple sites (www, wiki, forum, though NOT Trac (note that Roundup and Bugzilla can be made to look very good)).

However, if I can see any improvements that can be made to the various sites I will try and suggest them.
:: WWW could get some JS and CSS improvements and could be simplified.

Authentication
As noted in your Admin TODO page, the idea of OpenID being implemented is a good one and easily possible across all three systems:

* Trac: http://trac.sandbox.lt/auth/wiki/AuthOpenIdPlugin - note that this does NOT interfere with the built in authentication (You don't need to disable default authentication mechanism (trac.web.auth.*) if you are using it. OpenID plugin does not conflict with default authentication mechanism.)
* phpBB: http://phpbbopenid.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2 and http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbb-openid/ both seem to work but the second seems more integrated...
* MediaWiki: Perhaps the easiest and most official of them all: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID which also, incidentally, if you so wish, allows users to use their MediaWiki User page to log into other OpenID sites...

and finally...

:: trac and mediawiki extensions installed: none work....

::: Hi, having had a look at the problem you mention, it is clear that the database hasn't been updated. The solution would be to run 'sudo php maintenance/update.php' in the mediawiki installation directory to update the database. This may take a few minutes... Tek 12:03, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

:::: Works now. Only issue is trac and openID

::::: Hmm.. yes... I appear to be able to log into Trac fine with OpenID but it does appear to keep logging me out every time I browse to a new page. The odd part is, it appears to be storing a cookie called 'trac_session' and so should stay logged in. The only other thing I notice is that it keeps telling me that I have limited permissions until I validate my e-mail address, then telling me that my address is already validated. Perhaps this problem is something to do with the manual validation you mention that you have enabled to stop spammers? Tek 12:43, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

:::::: Ah, I just noticed what may be the problem, which is that Trac is not setting the cookie called 'trac_auth' which it sets when you log in as a normal user. Perhaps this is the problem? Tek 12:47, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

::::::: Oh and I just thought I'd point out that oddly enough, my user page: User:Tek is giving an nginx 404 error for some reason. Perhaps the short URL configuration has gone haywire?

IRCWeb
For one reason or another, your link to your 'IRCWeb' client appears not to work.

From: http://www.videolan.org/developers/
The link is to: http://krishna.videolan.org/cgi-bin/irc/irc.cgi

From: http://www.videolan.org/support/
The link is to: http://www.videolan.org/webirc/

However neither of these actually works. (with the /webirc/ folder missing from the /videolan/www.videolan.org/ folder of your Subversion respository)

Perhaps this just needs to be copied into place?

For the meanwhile, the following link should work (using Mibbit): https://www.mibbit.com/chat/?url=irc%3A%2F%2Firc.videolan.org%2F%23videolan

Altogether, I hope this helps and that these issues can be resolved as soon as possible.
Finally, do tell me if I can be of any help and you can of course e-mail me using: Special:Emailuser/Tek

:: Done for WebIRC jb 11:55, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Hope this helps, Tek 14:49, 17 May 2009 (CEST)

Finally
Sorry it took so long, but I finally got around to fixing the icons next to the links.

----

Hurray! This is nice to hear and it's nice to see how well the VLC sites are doing now, relatively.

I'm sorry I can't be around to help with things at the moment due to lots of personal hassles but I hope to be able to help out some more relatively soon...

The link is to: http://www.videolan.org/webirc/
However neither of these actually works. (with the /webirc/ folder missing from the /videolan/www.videolan.org/ folder of your Subversion respository)

As noted in your [Admin TODO] page, the idea of OpenID being implemented is a good one and easily possible across all three systems:

Is this fixed or is restarting VLC the fix? I am sending HD streams and after about 1 hour to 2 hours the CPU begins to spike at specific intervals corrupting the multicast stream that I am sending. I have to stop and restart VLC 0.8.5 to recover.

Some suggestions and follow-up
Well, to start, thanks for the response and I'll suggest the little I can...
Rather than my own description, a more detailed explanation can be found here:

Manual:Upgrading (sorry for the external link, Interwiki links seem not to work here)

Upgrading makes sense, mainly for bug-fixes and security but also for the wealth of new features often introduced...

:::::: Hi, having had a look at the problem you mention, it is clear that the database hasn't been updated. The solution would be to run 'sudo php maintenance/update.php' in the mediawiki installation directory to update the database. This may take a few minutes...

::::::: Hurray! OpenID works!!!

However, if I can see any improvements that can be made to the various sites I will try and suggest them.
:: WWW could get some JS and CSS improvements and could be simplified.
Authentication
As noted in your [Admin TODO] page, the idea of OpenID being implemented is a good one and easily possible across all three systems:

Authentication
As noted in your [Admin TODO] page, the idea of OpenID being implemented is a good one and easily possible across all three systems:

I graduated in one of the best 'Grandes Ecoles', best scientific schools and universities in France: the "Ecole Centrale Paris".

I also earned a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Paris.

My degree "Ingénieur de l'école Centrale Paris", which is also a Master's Degree.

Work
I am now a scientific attaché at the French Consulate in San Francisco.

VideoLAN
I am the VideoLAN chairman.

I am working on the VideoLAN project in many aspects for about a year now and I am very much involved, but not only on the devs aspects.

As a dev, I mostly program Qt4 interface. I also work a lot on contribs and external libraries and FourCC supports. I have built VLC media player on most possible platform (no BeOS, though).

As a non-dev, I moderate e-mails, worked a lot on this wiki (almost rewritten it with User:H2g2bob), answer forums and mails, work on the websites and help on IRC. As you can imagine, I do a lot of support.

jb (at) videolan (d0t) org is my mail, related to VideoLAN.
My Website (far from being finished) is my website.

Use my talk page to talk to me or give me some TODOs.

Wiki
I have rewritten a lot of pages on this wiki, and I have more than 1000 edits on this wiki.

Names
I am know under 'j-b', 'jb' on all the Sites

Websites' Status

Some suggestions and follow-up
Well, to start, thanks for the response and I'll suggest the little I can...

Wiki
Rather than my own description, a more detailed explanation can be found here:

Manual:Upgrading (sorry for the external link, Interwiki links seem not to work here)

Upgrading makes sense, mainly for bug-fixes and security but also for the wealth of new features often introduced...

When it comes to extensions, I will have to think about which ones are relevant to this wiki and I will see if I can come back to you on that. In the meanwhile, perhaps some of the sysops around here could help?

Main WWW

Authentication
As noted in your [Admin TODO] page, the idea of OpenID being implemented is a good one and easily possible across all three systems:

Hope this helps, Tek 14:49, 17 May 2009 (CEST)

Logo 'next to' VideoLAN links.
Hi,

While looking around the wiki, I noticed the little icon that has been put in to be next to links. While this works for me in Firefox 3.5b4, for some reason, in my main browser (Safari 4 Public Beta) and in Chrome (2.0.172.27) the icons appear beneath the link, obscuring the text and the icons are missing entirely in Internet Explorer 7 (haven't checked IE8, I don't really use Windows much) and Konqueror 4...

If it's of any use, here is the code that MediaWiki 1.11 seems to use to show icons next to external links:

<pre>
#bodyContent a.external, #bodyContent a[href^="gopher://"] {
-moz-background-clip:border;
-moz-background-inline-policy:continuous;
-moz-background-origin:padding;
background:transparent url(http://wiki.videolan.org/skins/monobook/external.png) no-repeat scroll right center;
padding-right:13px;
}
</pre>

so perhaps you could simply override that with 'http://www.videolan.org/favicon.ico'

One problem could be that the 'ico' format is not brilliant for inline images and a png would be more suitable...
Yours is currently: MS Windows icon resource - 2 icons, 32x32, 256-colors

Altogether, I hope this helps sort out these little icons (or we could just remove them :P)

Tek: Redone into nicer English.

LibVLC was switched to UTF-8 internally sometime in 2005, and it's now getting kind of usable again. Still, there's been quite many changes throughout 2006, so let's summarise.

Overview
As a general rules, all character strings passed to LibVLC should be in UTF-8. This includes, but is far from limited to the playlist, and all the chain from the input/access to the outputs. We pretty much needed Unicode anyway; the only options were UTF-8 and wide char. We picked UTF-8 because, as disruptive as it has been, it remains much less disruptive than wide characters. Also wide characters means different things on different platforms (e.g. UCS2LE on old Windows, UTF-16LE on
modern Windows, UTF-32 on glibc), are a pain to use in POSIX environment (including Mac OS X and Linux which most of the devs are using), and might have needed lots of libc replacements <code>wc*</code> functions on some platforms.

Historical approach
The original approach has been to rely on <code>ToLocale</code>, <code>FromLocale</code> and <code>LocaleFree</code> (and <code>ToLocaleDup</code>, <code>FromLocaleDup</code> and <code>free</code>) whenever a character string in the OS native representation was needed. It turned out to be a big mistake on Windows, which uses no less than three different representations internally: UTF-16 in the kernel and file system (Unicode/wide), ACP (ANSI Code Page) which is a locale-dependant 8-bit character set (CP1252 in the West), and even "OEM" (cp437 in the US, cp850 in Western Europe). Unfortunately, (To|From)Locale were using ACP, which prevents usage of Unicode code points outside the range of the local charset, while the filesystem and native Win32 supports them. This means VLC cannot reach some files.

Current approach
So we now have a comprehensive (but not fully yet) set of higher-level wrappers that accept UTF-8 character string to represent filenames, or text to be output to the console. At the time of writing, trunk includes:

* utf8_open, utf8_fopen, utf8_stat, utf8_lstat, utf8_mkdir, utf8_opendir, utf8_readdir, utf8_scandir for file system operation,

* utf8_fprintf, utf8_vfprintf for console output (or actually output in any file which needs local charset).

All of these functions behave like their non "utf8_"-prefixed equivalent with the exception that they expect UTF-8 character strings.

We also have EnsureUTF8 that forces a string into UTF-8 (replaces invalid character sequences with '?') and IsUTF8 that checks if the string is valid UTF-8 (returns NULL if not). These are useful when reading UTF-8 from untrusted sources, such as the network, before injecting the data into VLC.

Backward compatibility note
ToLocale and FromLocale should NEVER be used for filesystem operations anymore, except on code that is not aimed at Windows. And even then it's better to use wrappers; for instance, Mac OS X has some conversion logic for its directory listing. When using the Win32 API manually, always use the Unicode version (the one ending with 'W' instead of 'A'). If you need to convert to UTF-8 for use in LibVLC, you can use FromWide (Win32 only!). Of course, it's better to resort to the wrappers otherwise you always need a specific Windows implementations.
Please refer to the various pieces of code using Win32 SHFolderGetPath() for reference implementations.

Now for the good (?) news: in trunk, the only parts that still use the <code>*Locale</code> LibVLC APIs are:
* GnomeVFS (pretty much dead and not aimed at Win32 anyway),
* GnuTLS (no support from GnuTLS library),
* skins2,
* WxWidgets (only on non-Win32 and being phased out)

However I have only checked the core and plugins, so there might be problems with browser plugins and bindings. Also, if you intend to write new plugins, please keep this in mind.

Automatic charset detection
In addition to this, I remind you that we now have the GetFallbackEncoding() API that returns the ANSI code page used by Windows for the given locale, to be passed to iconv. For instance, if your system is configured to run in German, it returns "CP1252". This is convenient when handling subtitles or various kind of texts that are typically aimed at Windows users.

Quality Assurance
This section of the wiki is about helping to increase the quality of different versions of VideoLAN's products, mainly VLC media player.

Why this page ?
Main idea
There is not much on this page yet, but the idea is to develop test protocols, regroup test files, and at the end improve the whole quality of VLC, to avoid regressions and check roadmaps.

Who is concerned
The community of VideoLAN's numerous users and developers can enforce the project by doing systematic tests and reporting bugs and regressions. Some projects rely on a lot of external code that evolves a lot. Being numerous can help to make it better.

Bugs
The bugs should be tracked down and killed using trac.

Why should you get involved ?
The more we are, the more bugs are spotted, the better VLC is !
Easy, ain't it ?

So if you help, everyone will be a winner.

How can you get involved ?
Use this talk page or contact; for a start User_talk:J-b (this will change).
Then, just run the tests and modify this wiki's pages.

Bug reporting
Use trac to do these.

Urgent
* Prepare the tests for VLC 0.8.6
* Gather original and references video and audio files

VLC
Motto: Let's improve VLC !!!

Tests to run
You want to help by testing VLC ? There are a few tests that you can handle:

* VLC playback tests (codecs and files related) Win32 and MacOS focused.

* VLC functionality tests

* VLC transcode and streaming tests

Files
Official files
All those files should be tested inside the reference FTP.

ftp://streams.videolan.org/streams-videolan/reference/

Use that structure to create the reports.

More files
Where to search for more files:
* MPlayer's MPlayer's FTP
* References codecs pages usually, linking to those should be enough...

Versions roadmaps
0.9.0
0.9.0 should be the first version to review now.

NB
Use the latest NB, 20070425 or newer to run your tests And report.
Here you can download experimental versions of VLC.

As a non-dev, I moderate e-mails, worked a lot on this wiki (almost rewritten it with User:H2g2bob), answer forums and mails, work on the websites and help on IRC. As you can imagine, I do a lot of support.
Win32 V. 0.8.6i Crash On Snapshot!
As of 8//8/08 I have discovered what looks like a bug inside of 0.8.6i when trying to right click and choose snapshot from the playing video. It crashed the application, and bogs down windows. This happened on windows XP Home sp2, Intel p4 2.53GHz 1GB ram. All updates on machine are current, and it also has the latest quicktime, windows media player, and winamp installed.
Win32 Contribs 20070220
There is some missing reference to gsm_ms_encoder and gsm_ms_decoder. I have tried to compile the libgsm, but there is no such method. Could you provide this library or give a hint, where to find it?
Besides when using your contrib some libraries need to be put in some directory named /home/videolan/j-b..... (sorry, I don't remember the path exactly (not sitting in front of the machine where I used your contrib - I will look it up on Sunday). Why does the vlc bootstrap/configure/compile reference this path which looks like it is your build path?

Thx in advance for answering my questions and keep up the good work!

:Well, this contrib may be broken because of the support and non-support of GSM in ffmpeg. This should be changed. Use another (older contrib), and I should do a new one in a few days.
::Thanks very much. I have now just added pseudo-methods for these two missing methods and it worked for me. --Hxp 14:36, 14 March 2007 (CET)
Hi,
I'm using your guide to compile VLC (User:J-b#My_VLC) under Ubuntu 8.10 but is outdated:<br>
"configure: WARNING: --with-ffmpeg-tree is deprecated. Use PKG_CONFIG_PATH instead."<br>
And, therefore, an error occurs when it tries to compile libavcodec:<br>
"checking for AVCODEC... no<br>
It would be better to delete that wiki page or update it.<br>
<s><u>Solution</u>:<br>
The real path/name in ffmpeg svn version is libpostproc/postprocess.h.<br>
The temporal solution is change the name to the file postprocess.h > postproc.h
These options no longer exist: --with-ffmpeg-mp3lame --with-ffmpeg-faac

For some reason I do not understand, VLC does not recognize x264 as compiled... <br>
<u>Solution</u>:<br>
This solves both the problem of x264 as of ffmpeg libraries:<br>
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=extras/ffmpeg/libavcodec:extras/ffmpeg/libavdevice:extras/ffmpeg/libavformat:extras/ffmpeg/libavutil:extras/ffmpeg/libswscale:extras/ffmpeg/libpostproc:extras/x264:/usr/lib/pkgconfig;./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-snapshot --enable-dbus-control --enable-musicbrainz --enable-shared-libvlc --enable-mozilla --enable-lirc --enable-live555 --with-live555-tree=extras/live --enable-x264 --enable-shout --enable-taglib --enable-v4l --enable-cddax --enable-dvb --enable-vcdx --enable-realrtsp --enable-xvmc --enable-svg --enable-dvdread --enable-dv --enable-theora --enable-faad --enable-twolame --enable-real --enable-flac --enable-tremor --enable-dirac --enable-skins2 --enable-qt4 --enable-aa --enable-caca --enable-esd --enable-portaudio --enable-jack --enable-xosd --enable-galaktos --enable-goom --enable-ggi --disable-cddax --disable-vcdx --enable-mkv --enable-dca --disable-qt --disable-kde --enable-a52 --enable-xvideo --disable-fribidi....

Obviously, some parameters that I put into this config can (and should) change depending on the needs of each.</s>

----
<u>Edits</u>:<br>
There is a bug in the code of VLC that does not link the code of ffmpeg correctly.

Hello, I was just wondering if you were contemplating an upgrade of this wiki to MediaWiki 1.14 as I noticed that you are still on 1.11 which seems rather counterproductive.

I was also wondering if you had considered using Extension:PHPBB from mediawiki.org to allow unified login between your forum and wiki especially as you were considering OpenID.

Also do tell me if I can be of any help with the site as the code for the various VideoLAN projects is a little over my head so I'd love to help with this (I'm fairly familiar with working on community sites if not media player code).

(also something appears to be wrong with Trac: (though I'm sure this has already been noted)
<pre>:Report execution failed: invalid reference to FROM-clause entry for table "t" LINE 9: LEFT OUTER JOIN ticket_custom diff ON t.id=diff.ticket AND... ^ HINT: There is an entry for table "t", but it cannot be referenced from this part of the query.)</pre>
on the page: )

Oh and IRCWeb isn't working as of the time of writing: http://krishna.videolan.org/cgi-bin/irc/irc.cgi (can't reach server) (once again, probably noted)

Once again, tell me if I can be of any use, otherwise, thanks for the great work on VLC and the other VideoLAN projects and I'll try and help with the wiki where I can!
