MSys is a helper environment for MinGW, the compiler chain for Windows based on GCC. It is the '''fastest''' and '''recommended '''way to build VLC natively on Windows. Note that you could also [[Win32Compile|cross compile]] VLC from Linux, if desired (it is faster).

VLC is a complex program with many dependencies, so minimal command-line experience is required. Also, don't be in a hurry (2 hours is a minimum for the whole process) and don't despair if it doesn't work first time.

To edit unix-style text documents you need a suitable editor.

For those wishing to have a Notepad look-and-feel I recommend [http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad2/ notepad2], which may tempt you to ditch Notepad altogether. You can set File - Line endings - Default to "Unix (LF)", but it always saves opened files in the ending style they have.

== Unzip Utility (7-zip) ==

Many files to downloaded will have to be uncompressed. As most of them use Linux-originated formats (.tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.lzma), you will need a versatile unzipping utility. A recent version of [http://www.7-zip.org/ 7-zip] is therefore strongly advised.

Please note that most archives contain directory structures. Unless otherwise stated, you have to merge the contents with the existing dirs

Before installing, ensure your Windows user name does not contain spaces (VLC will not build in a folder with spaces in it). If it does, please create another user on your system.

If you want any custom options, like "--disable-lua" or anything of that nature, you'll need to edit that file directly instead of passing them in as parameters (at least currently that is required).

== Make (compile) ==

Note : If your <username> starts with the "u" or "x" character, change C:\MSys\1.0\home\<username>\config.h and double all backslashes in VLC_COMPILED_BY constant.

Type the following command :

PATH=/usr/win32/bin:$PATH make

== Create self-contained packages ==

Once the compilation is done, build self-contained VLC packages with one of the following "make" commands:

make package-win32-base

(This will create a subdirectory named vlc-x.x.x with all the binaries "stripped" without any debugging symbols).

make package-win32-zip

(Same as above but will package the directory in a zip file).

make package-win32

(Same as above but will also create an auto-installer package. You will need to have NSIS installed in its default location for this to work).

make package-win32-base-debug

(This will create a subdirectory named vlc-x.x.x with all the binaries containing debug info usable by gdb).

Note that with the 1.2 branch these names have changed slightly. Run '
grep ':' Makefile | grep package-win32
to see what they are now.

=Introduction=

This is a guide for Windows users with a step-by-step instruction to download, install, configure and build your VLC.

This guide uses [http://www.cygwin.com '''Cygwin'''] a Linux-like environment for Windows used for compilation of the VLC source code.

Start off by creating a VLC and a download folder on your hard drive where you can put all the installation files:

For further reference, the assumption is made that the local user will be 'Administrator'.

=Cygwin=

Download the latest [http://www.cygwin.com/cygwin/setup.exe Cygwin setup] and save it in your download location:

==Selecting Cygwin packages to install==

Run the setup program with the following options:

Installation type : Install from Internet (default)

Root directory : C:\cygwin (default)

Local Package directory : C:\VLC\Downloads\cygwin (your download location)

Internet Connection : Direct Connection (preferred, if it fails try another)

Download Site : Choose a download site closest to you (FTP preferred)

At the "Select Packages" section of the installation process you can select packages by clicking the button with the rotating 2 arrows. (This is under the "New" section). It shows "Skip" next to the button if the package isn't selected yet.

Clicking the button a few times will rotate through the possible package versions including "Skip" (meaning do not install or remove if installed) and "Keep" (meaning keep using the current installed version). If a package was already installed it will also show the "Current" version just to the left of it.

Select the following packages (some others will automatically be selected as well):

==Cygwin environment==

Start Cygwin from the icon on your desktop (With Windows Vista run it with admin rights, so right click and select "Run as administrator"). If it runs for the first time it will automatically create a home\"username" folder in the Cygwin environment; user being the currently logged on Windows user. Assuming this is the 'Administrator' user it will create the following folder:

C:\cygwin\home\Administrator (example)

NOTE: On your desktop, you can rightclick the Cygwin icon and (in the Options field of the Cygwin Properties) set the Command history Buffer size to as large as possible: 999. This setting will make it possible to scroll back further in the Cygwin environment.

=VLC source code=

== Git ==
The very latest VLC source code can be obtained through a tool called [[Git]]. The Cygwin package we're about to install comes with an internal git component.

cd /cygdrive/c/VLC/

git clone git://git.videolan.org/vlc.git

or if you just want to download latest VLC revision (saves bandwidth)

git clone git://git.videolan.org/vlc.git --depth 1

or if your proxy denies git protocol connections use:

git clone http://git.videolan.org/git/vlc.git

In this case you need to set the proxy address first:

export http_proxy = <proxy>:<port>

If git fails for some reason, then please try to use git from basic Windows command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd), not from Cygwin shell.

Please note that the very latest VLC sources ("master" branch) does not necessary build fine all the time. So if you need something stable, better is to use a git tag or a version snapshot archive.

== Snapshots ==

You can do the same by using the snapshots in the [http://nightlies.videolan.org/ nightly builds] site.

== Specific Version ==

You can get a specific version of VLC source code from the [http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/ source ftp] directory.

Another option is to sync specific version represented by a tag in git:

git checkout <version>

where <version> is one like: 1.0.1, 1.0.2, ..

=Bootstrap=
First move to vlc folder, if you aren't already there

cd vlc

and then run bootstrap.

dos2unix botstrap
./bootstrap

You should go through dos2unix for every script which produces errors related to '\r'

It might fail with some '''unable to remap error <some_dll_file_name>'''. It seems you need to rebase all Cygwin DLLs: close all your cygwin applications and launch 'ash' from basic windows command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd), from there run rebaseall (so start e.g. C:\cygwin\bin\ash.exe and type there text below).

/bin/rebaseall -v

= External libraries to the source code=

VLC depends on other libraries (code) to provide some features like AC3 audio or MPEG-4 video encoding/decoding etc.

Depending on your needs you will have to install and compile some or all of these external libraries.

== Get the Win32 "contrib" package ==

A package with most of these libraries already compiled so it's actually really easy to compile a full-featured version of vlc can be found here:

Download the latest version of a "contrib" package for win32:

It's a good idea to check the INSTALL.Win32 file in the VLC source directory for the appropriate contrib download file if you build older VLC versions.

Save it into your download location:

C:\VLC\Downloads\

==Installing the Win32 "contrib" package in Cygwin==

Start Cygwin and enter the following command in your shell:

rm -rf /usr/win32
cd /cygdrive/c/VLC/Downloads
tar xf contrib-20080702-win32-bin-gcc-4.2.1-sjlj-runtime-3.13-only.tar.bz2 -C /

Replace with your version of the "contrib" file and DON'T FORGET THE / (slash)
at the end.

This will extract the contents of the file into usr/win32 folder within your Cygwin environment.

NOTE: Make sure to DELETE your old version (/usr/win32 folder) instead of extracting a new version on top of it.

Version 1.0.2 of VLC source code has been tested and found working with contrib-20091020-win32-bin-gcc-4.2.1-sjlj-runtime-3.15.2-only.tar.bz2

==QT4 issues==
There are some QT4 and winapi issues (like '''InterlockedCompareExchange''' error) which you can work out with information you get from http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=50360&p=164758&hilit=win32api#p164219 and http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&p=175301#p175301 threads. If you don't plan to compile QT4 or skins2 interface, you can skip this.

=Configure=

In order to make our lives just a bit easier the following section describes what commandline options should be used for compiling and those commands will then be put into a "script" that can be executed (rather than having to copy and paste all the time).

==Configure script for compiling VLC==

Create a new text document with the following lines:

This command is tested and configures VLC 1.0.2 properly so that it builds fine.

NOTE: The following options are added for debug purposes and makes the final package a bit larger but the advantage is it's easier to debug in case of crash reports:

--disable-optimizations
--enable-debug

If you want to report a crash bug to the VLC team, it is necessary that you provide a stack backtrace. Unfortunately, Windows automatic crash reporter cannot generate such a backtrace as debug symbols used by GCC compiler aren't understood by Windows, therefore we suggest that you install Dr. MinGW (http://jrfonseca.dyndns.org/projects/gnu-win32/software/drmingw/) which will extend Windows Just-In-Time Debugger and provide the necessary debug information.

NOTE: The following options is needed for Qt4 support:

--enable-qt4

As of version 0.9.0 VLC will include the Qt interface. More information can be found about QT here: http://www.trolltech.com

The "Win32 contrib package" at present includes the linux and Windows equivalents of uic, moc and roc executables which are required for building this interface.

The linuxs executables have to be '''deleted''' from the contrib folder:

C:\cygwin\usr\win32\bin\moc (example)
C:\cygwin\usr\win32\bin\rcc (example)
C:\cygwin\usr\win32\bin\uic (example)

Save as filename in your "scripts" folder at your download/install location:

configure-vlc.sh

NOTE: Save using "All files" and not "Text files" otherwise Windows might append the extension .txt

Copy the file into your home directory:

C:\cygwin\home\Administrator

Start Cygwin and enter the following command in your shell:

dos2unix configure-vlc.sh

After your configure-vlc.sh is completed, copy it to your vlc directory and run it:

./configure-vlc.sh

If it complains about permissions, use chmod and try again:

chmod 777 configure-vlc.sh

NOTE. (If you plan to use JVLC) To make vlc-control.dll accessible by Java on ''Windows'' configure-vlc.sh should be modified to include "-Wl,--add-stdcal-alias". Example:

===POSIX emulation layer===

VLC can be built with or without the so called POSIX emulation layer. Without is the default and is usually better (and with hasn't been tested for quite some time). If you do want to use the emulation layer, then just leave out the line with the following options:

It's time to start Cygwin again...

==Compiling VLC==

Enter the following commands in your Cygwin shell:

cd vlc

NOTE: Open /cygdrive/c/VLC/libtool in text editor and if "global_symbol_pipe =" line is blank, replace it with :

Build it! (remember to run configure-vlc.sh before first build)

make

Cross your fingers and wait... because it might take few hours before compilation is done.
If you have multicore CPU or multi CPU box, you can use -j2 switch (or maybe -j3 or -j4 etc.) to speed up make process

make -j2

==Creating self contained packages==

Once the compilation is done, you can build self-contained VLC packages with the following "make" commands:

make package-win32-base

(This will create a subdirectory named vlc-x.x.x with all the binaries "stripped" without any debugging symbols).

make package-win32-zip

(Same as above but will package the directory in a zip file).

make package-win32

(Same as above but will also create an auto-installer package. You will need to have NSIS installed in its default location for this to work).

* If you have permissions problems running make package-*, chmod 777 -R the vlc folder.
* If you have permissions problems running vlc.exe after packaging, rename or delete vlc.exe.manifest

==Updating Cygwin package versions==

If you need to update or install additional packages you can just run the Cygwin setup.exe from your download location:

C:\Downloads\cygwin\setup.exe (example)

==GDB (Gnu Debugger)==

This section requires that you installed the gdb (Gnu Debugger) in Cygwin.

This is a typical example of creating a crashlog:

cd vlc-trunk

gdb --args vlc.exe --fast-mutex --reset-config --reset-plugins-cache

NOTE: vlc-0.9.0 uses libtool for building sources, if you want to debug from the source tree, you should type the following command instead:

libtool --mode=execute gdb --args vlc --reset-config --reset-plugins-cache

In the debugger mode run the program and make sure you reset the preferences!

(gdb) run

NOTE: the (gdb) is just a prompt which means you are in the debugger mode, please note that ''--fast-mutex'' option is no longer supported in vlc-0.9.0

It will now take a lot longer than usual for VLC to start :)

Now operate VLC as you would normally do. As soon as a crash issue occurs
you'll notice a line like this:

This problem is related to a warning earlier on and only occured in a few revisions where a built-in workaround wasn't working properly:

There should now be compiled autoconf version (probably 2.60 or newer) in extras/contrib that the bootstrap process will use.

If the above error appears, it might mean you don't have the TMPDIR defined in cygwin. You will need to define it and have its value point to your temporary directory. You can use '''export TMPDIR="/cygdrive/c/temp"''' or any directory for it (/cygdrive/c/temp is same as C:\temp). If this doesn't help, make sure you run cygwin with admin rights (With Windows Vista, right click cygwin shortcut and select "Run as administrator"). Avira AntiVir might also cause issues to m4, so disabling it while ./bootstrap might help.

==Compiling faster==
Building VLC on Cygwin is really slow, but you can spend less time recompiling by using [http://ccache.samba.org/ ccache]. This software saves the files compiled with their compilation command, and output them if they were not changed and if the compilation command is the same as last build. It is really useful for frequent make clean && make. To use it, change the CC line in your configure script to:

CC="ccache gcc -mno-cygwin" CXX="ccache g++ -mno-cygwin" \

The first build after reconfiguring will be as slow as ever, but the following builds will be faster.

There are a lot of different types of external subtitle files. Most contain textual data. That is the subtitle
and a [[timestamp]] at which this subtitles is to be shown. Some of these allow for additional formatting, others
don't.

When you open VLC and the skin you chose appears, right-click somewhere on the skins background and then choose ''Interface'' and ''Preferences'' (also accessible by pressing Ctrl+P). In the preferences dialog change the ''Interface type'' to ''Native''. Then click save and restart VLC. It should show up in its default interface.

== How do I fix VLC when it does not anymore show up properly ==

If you chose a broken skin it might happen that VLC does not anymore show up properly and that you cannot anymore access the settings as mentioned above.

Then you have to switch back to the default interface.

On Windows you can just open your Start menu and open

On any other system, or when the start menu entry is missing, run VLC with the following command line:

vlc -I qt

Now that VLC has been started with its native interface you can open the preferences (Ctrl+P) and change the active skin file. Chose the default skin or a skin you know that works. Then again set the skin interface to be the default one and restart VLC.

== Are there skins with a full screen controller? ==

Full screen controllers in skins are supported since VLC 1.1. But apart from the default skin coming with VLC not many other skins have this feature.

== How to create your own skin ==

There exists a program that enables you to create skins without any deep knowledge how skins are made up exactly. It is the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skineditor.html VLC Skin Editor]

We have chance at a clean break with the new Qt interface, I think it should be used to get rid of the some of the complexity and ambiguity in the old interface. NOTE: I literally JUST got into VLC development, so some of what I put here might be completely unworkable, or need some modifications. ==Open Network==

The open network stream is a mess in the old interface. Most of the protocols require basically the same info, and yet we have 4 radio buttons to select from protocols, then 2 URL fields, 2 Port selectors, 1 address field (URL/Address, why the distinction).

I propose to change it to something simpler: [http://www.mushroomstamp.ca/vlc/qtintfmockup1.png Open Network]

Basically, you select the protocol from the dropdown, then you type in your address. If you just paste a url into the address field, the dropdown automatically detects the correct protocol from the url (if it can) and sets the correct value. If you have a url, and then change the protocol from the dropdown, it will modify the url appropriately. If you select a protocol where the port or the options are meaningless, they will be disabled (either that or they won't be shown unless they are relevant.

:Looks better indeed :) The port number thing is kind of problematic though. If you get stuff like an mms url on the web it'll use something like "mms://host.example.com:8080/myteststream". If the user specified port is left null, like in your screen shot, i guess that we can disregard it. But what happens if the user specifies the port number ? ::Good point. I think we have 2 options here:
:: 1. When a user types/pastes an address like "mms://host.example.com:8080/myteststream" with a port number, we detect this and set the port correctly. If they change the port number in the combobox, we update the textual URL to match. While this probably wouldn't be a problem to implement, it's kind of redundant to show the port in two places.
:: 2. Only show/enable the port selector for protocols that cannot specify the port in the address, or where it is more common to get an address without a port (UDP/RDP). There are many bottlenecks currently limiting the performance and scalability of VLC as a streaming server:

*The I/O blocks are linear, which implies lots of avoidable memory copying and dynamic memory allocations (particularly in the streaming output).
*mdate() (the timestamping function) is invoked in too many places to count them; but it is not a cheap operation on modern systems and should be avoided on the fast path. Ideally, a single thread would only need to call mdate() at most once per wake-up. In some case, mdate() is only used for debugging purpose which is really inefficient.
*The HTTP/RTSP core is single-threaded. This prevents scaling to SMP systems (which are the norm on server-side nowadays) properly. This also implies not very scalable I/O event polling. Finally, this gets problematic if one HTTP/RTSP client triggers a computationally intensive operation (such as establishing a TLS context if HTTP/SSL is used).
*There are many dynamic memory allocations that could be avoided. Video filters and codecs are very careful about this, but the stream output plugins are not. In many case, a stack-based buffer can be used (stack buffer, has constant time fast lock-less allocation, and needs not be freed explicitly) instead.
*The messaging subsystems might be adding more locking (needs checking); this should be avoided particularly if the message is anyway ignord (e.g. debug message in non-debug mode).

Other improvements that would be particularly benefitial on the server side:

*Memory allocation failure are not always duly handled. In some cases, that could potentially be leveraged by a client to crash a VLC server by causing a very large allocation attempt.
*Rewrite and revive the root wrapper to allow VLC to bind to the RTSP (554) port while not retaining root privileges.

== Interaction with online services ==
Hello, I would like to present their concept idea, it involves interaction with online services and some changes in the user interface of VLC Media Player.

On the first tab (Movie) is very straightforward, a user inserts a DVD, HD-DVD or BlyRay selects the desired slot and begin viewing.
In the future it will be possible to implement view of the disk image.

The second tab (Video), makes it possible to watch media files directly from the HDD.
Setting up a profile can be all sorted by category (Films, TV shows, etc.), the category of Films on (Action, Horror, Camedy), the category of TV show on (Lost, House M. D, X-Files), etc.
After watching a movie or TV show, you can not closing VLC media player immediately to share impressions with your friends on Twitter, MySpace, Facebook.

The third tab (Music), provides an opportunity to listen to music as a straight line from the HDD.
Similar to the previous tab, everything can be sorted into categories (Hip-Hop, R'n'B, Dance, Rock).

Another idea is to tab Online TV, where you can make a small internet browser tied to popular online Servas (YouTube) and send links to interesting videos to friends directly from the VLC Player.

==Abstract==

Unlike Windows and Linux, Mac OS X does not offer much in terms of alternatives to its built-in QuickTime media player. VLC media player represents the only Mac media player with significant support for various media formats and a tight integration with the OS, including a "Mac-like" user interface. As it is the only full, viable alternative to QuickTime on the Mac OS X platform, it is important that it stay current with various Mac technologies to offer users a comprehensive option for media playback.

Aspects of tighter Mac OS X integration:
*Quick Look Generator for Leopard (to generate thumbnails and full media previews from the Finder)
*Making most common preferences accessible in a Mac-style preference window organized with icon tabs across the top such as in Safari and Mail.
*Moving the Readme document and other help resources into a HelpViewer HTML document to allow better help searching in Leopard.
*Improvements in steaming server wizard to be more in-line with other Mac wizards and easier to use for personal streaming between Macs.
*Add better support for package files that contain media VLC can play, such as iMovie Projects and EyeTV recordings.
*Update the VLC file icons to the 512 by 512 size for Leopard.

==Detailed Description==

This project will use the libraries provided by Apple for creating a Quick Look Generator. Due to various restrictions placed on these by Apple, the method for generating the live preview may use the mozilla plugin if no better alternative can be found. Creating these enhancements will require a combination of C and Objective-C. The Quick Look function should generate a thumbnail when simply browsing the Finder or viewing with CoverFlow and should provide full playback when the spacebar is pressed (which actually opens the Quick View). For those not familiar with the details of Mac OS X, Apple provides very specific models for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) defined in documents on their [http://developer.apple.com developer site]. In addition to providing the Quick Look functionality, I will be attempting to bring VLC more in line with these usability guidelines. This will include updating the preferences window to have a more Mac OS X feel and organization to it for at least the most fundamental set of preferences (with the rest to be accessible in the traditional way). I will also be moving some of the documentation into HelpViewer format to allow easy searching of it directly from the menu bar in Leopard. Also, I will be designing a new Streaming/Transcoding Wizard that better matches the Mac OS X wizard look and feel, such as the in the Bluetooth Setup Assistant or Network Setup Assistant. The new icons should look more like other modern Mac OS X file icons since the current ones more closely resemble icons found in the Mac OS X Public Beta. These new icons should be included for several of the formats that are newer to VLC (and were not supported when the old icons were made) and should differentiate between types (audio vs. video) in the icon style.

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3 and ogg. It also plays DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming networks. In addition to playing audio and video files, VLC media player provides additional formats which can be played and customized.

VLC media player was initially known as VideoLAN Client. However, in recent years, the software has also become an extremely powerful server to stream live and on-demand video in several formats to the intranet network and the Internet.

It started as a student project at the French École Centrale, Paris, but is now a worldwide project with developers from more than 20 countries.

DVD and SVCD subtitles are merely images, so you won't be able to change anything for them. OGM and Matroska subtitles are rendered text, so you will be able to change several options.

Text rendering options can be changed in the Preferences. In the ''Modules'' section, ''text renderer'' subsection, open the ''freetype'' page. You can then set the font and its size. For the font, you have to select a font file. Under Windows, they can be found in ''C:\Windows\Fonts''. Under MacOS X, they are in ''/System/Library/Fonts''. Maybe the file you are trying to read is not fully supported. VLC does not use the codec packs (the software that decodes video signals) you might have installed. It comes with its own codecs. If there is no open-source decoder for the format you are trying to read, it won't be supported. (There is an exception, under Windows, for codecs that use the DirectShow framework.)

To find out, open the Messages Window (View menu) and restart your stream. Look for error messages (red messages)

This area of the wiki contains a list with the possibilities {{VLC}} gives you. It was made to help people better realize the potential {{VLC}} has. Some entries will simply mention the possibility, others try to explain how to do it as well. Let me start by apologising for my horrible spelling, but I hope you will be able to decipher the texts anyway.

=== Compact Disc (CD) Images ===
If you have a [[CD-DA]] (audio CD), [[SVCD]], or [[VCD]] packaged inside a CD-image, in some cases [[VLC media player]] can play this without you having to mount it or extract it. You can simply choose "open file" and pick the CD-image. For CD-image support vlc has to be [[compile]]d using [[libcdio]] (<tt>--enable-libcdio</tt>) and the various plugins which use libcdio need to be selected (<tt>--enable-cddax</tt>, <tt>--enable-vcdx</tt>). Some of these enablements may not be the default for your OS.

The kinds of Compact Disc formats supported are CDRWIN's BIN/CUE format, cdrdao's TOC format, and a limited set of Nero (NRG) formats.

(''[[libcdio]] also supports ISO-9660 image reading but at present there is no VLC access plugin which uses it. DVD's images follow the UDF format and at present there is no support in libcdio for that, although some limited progress has been made in that direction. It is possible that will get added in the future; volunteers are most welcome).

=== How to enable/use subtitles ===
Before you try to enable [[subtitle]]s make sure the subtitles you have are in a format that VLC can read! You can find the list of compatible subtitle formats [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html here].
If VLC has detected any sort of subtitles available, you will be able to turn them on under the menu: ''Video->Subtitles track->Track 1''

Auto detection of subtitle files uses a 'fuzzy' logic which you can specify. If this is wrongly specified you may end up with more subtitle file options than really exist or miss some that are provided. By default it allows any file in the right place which exactly matches the video name, and may have some extra characters. If you are not seeing the number of subtitle options you expect you might want to allow more 'fuzziness' by changing the preference in video/subtitles/subtitle autodetection where help is available if you 'hover' over the field.

If you mainly use .srt subtitles or .sub, you can get them turned on automatically when they are detected, by setting the ''Input/Codecs->Advanced->Choose subtitle track'' to 0, it will automatically turn on the subtitle track. You can also experiment with the ''Choose subtitle language'' on the same page. But if you experiment a bit with the settings you should be able to get subtitles turned on automatically.

'''Notes:''' On Mac OS X, the "Video->Subtitles track" menu item is permanently disabled for some reason. You must manually specify the location of the subtitles file in the "Subpictures" pane of the preferences.

Unfortunately the default font for (srt-)subtitles doesn't include unicode characters (hexadezimal number) 2011 (non-breaking-hyphen), 2012 (figure dash) and 2a2f (cross-product) ...

VLC should be able to succesfully play both audio and video in wma and wmv 1 and 2, for the newest version (wmv3) only the windows version of vlc will be able to play it, since no opensource implementation of wmv3 have been made so far, so the windows vlc plays it by using the windows api. DRM files however can not be played on any OS.

Announce the currently playing track to mirc (an irc client). This is often referred to as a "now playing" script. To be able to get this functionality with vlc one approach would be to use the HTTP interface. With it you can create a simple file which will display "'Artist' with the song 'Title' from the album 'Album' the genre is 'Genre'" on a page in ur browser. You can then pull that page from mirc with standard sockets and thereby use the text in a script in mirc. Below I will provide some VERY simple and very ugly examples on how you could use this. The examples are tested with vlc 0.8.5 and mirc 6.12. I can't guarantee the code work with any other versions (although it most likely will). Ok so here we go. You start with create a test.html file in the http interface directory (C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\http) inside this file paste the following to ONE line or it will not work:

Only things u might want to change is the port the http interface listens on, thats the first line and is port 8082 in my case. You might also want some other text than "is listening to" just change as you see fit.

Thats pretty much it. You should enable the http interface in vlc by default if u wanna use this on a regular basis. This is done under preferences in "Interface->Main interfaces"

Then with all this done (and vlc restarted) you can type /now in mirc and it will display ur currently playing track.

This was made for mp3 tracks, so if it doesn't work with other types of media let me know.

You can of course always simply find a link to a radiostream and then open it as you would any other network stream in VLC. But if you would like to browse a list of online radios, you can try the list of shoutcast radio stations VLC can download for you. First you need top open the playlist window: View->Playlist. Once you have the playlist window open chose: ''Manage->Service discovery->Shoutcast radio listings''. After 10 seconds or so the playlist should have become populated by radio station entries. You obviously require internet access for this to work! If you want the stations sorted alphabetically, you can chose: ''Sort->Sort by title''. Also note shoutcast have many thousands stream availeble, per default in 0.8.2 250 stations are downloaded, this can be changed in the preferences under: Playlist->Service discovery->Shoutcast. Note that the more stations u want to add, the longer delay u will see when the station list is downloaded parsed and added to the playlist. Also note you should see 2 "Folder nodes" in the playlist under shoutcast called Genres and bitrate where the stations will be listed under their respective areas. Note that most stations claim to be multi genre, so a station might be listed under both Top40, pop and rock.

For VLC 1.0.2 "Goldeneye" under Linux, I got the Shoutcast listing by (from the VLC tools) Media/Services Discovery/Shoutcast Radio listings. After checking that option, the playlist was populated with the Shoutcast list.

* This version of VLC contains a [[Qt Interface|new interface]] for Windows and Linux. This interface lacks a few features that used to be present in vlc 0.8.6:
** "Streaming wizard" and "VLM control". These features will be replaced by a better alternative in the next version. If you absolutely need these features, we advise you to keep vlc 0.8.6
** Similarly, "Bookmarks" will be reintroduced in an improved version at a later point
* The default Interface is now [[Qt Interface]] on linux and windows.
* The default for --sout-keep has changed. It's now activated by default.
* The marq, mosaic and logo commands in the [[Console#rc interface|rc interface]] changed. They now require a target name as their first argument. Example:
