Scheperell: /* Which is the last release for 10.2.8? */

On Mac OS 9
Sorry, VLC will not work on OS 9, and probably never will. However, Mac OS X is supported.

Why VLC 0.8.1 doesn't work with Mac OS X 10.1.5?
Because we do use functions which aren't available in this version. The 0.7.0 release is the last one which supports this OS. Additionally, you shouldn't use it anymore, since 10.2 is much faster than 10.1.5 even on older Macs.

Which is the last release for 10.2.8?
That's VLC 0.8.4a. Note that it requires QuickTime 6.5.2, which is the latest QuickTime version for this Mac OS X release series. With prior versions, you'll get unexpected video output results.

Why doesn't VLC 0.8.6a work on 10.3, although you state it does?
First of all, make sure that you got 10.3.9 installed. Any earlier release, particularly 10.3.5 and below, doesn't support current versions of VLC. Additionally, while QuickTime 6.5.2 is strictly required, QuickTime 7.x is strongly recommended for performance and usability reasons.

Do current releases of VLC work on Mac OS 10.5 / Leopard?
Yes, VLC 0.8.6b runs without any problems out of the box. VLC's next major release 0.9.0 will add further support (most importantly the ability to compile VLC on Leopard) and may include some exclusive features.

VLC just bounces in the Dock and quits or just shows a "VLC" menu and nothing else. What to do?
Please check whether you're using a VLC release which is able to run on your version of Mac OS X. If it fits, run the "Remove Preferences" script provided on VLC's disk-image or delete both a folder called "VLC" and a file called org.videolan.vlc.plist in ~/Library/Preferences (your personal preferences folder).

I am on Mac OS 9. Which version of VLC can I run?
From the download page notes: "There is not, and there will never be, a version for Mac OS 9." http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

How do you tell Apple's &$@&$*&! DVDPlayer not to start automatically when you insert a DVD?
Get to Mac OS X global system preferences, open up the "CDs & DVDs" section in the "Hardware" category, add VLC to the list of apps next to "When you insert a video DVD" and select it afterwards. That's it. Note that setting up VLC for Audio CD playback is possible this way as well.

Why won't VLC play DVDs from a region other than what my drive is set to?
Many people try to use VLC to play DVDs from regions their drive is not set to. However, the DVD drives on most new Macs have region lockout on the hardware level, so VLC will not necessarily be able to play discs from multiple regions. You may be able to play the disc by opening it as a Video_TS folder instead of a DVD, or by changing the method used by libdvdccss to decrypt DVDs (go to Preferences->All->Input/Codecs->Access Modules->DVD without menus->Method used by libdvdcss for decryption). If you play a lot of DVDs from different regions your best option is to buy a USB or Firewire external drive that you can set to the region you require.
Graphical Interface
Many people who want to use VLC media player on Mac OS X will be intending to use the standard graphical interface that is provided by VLC. The standard interface consists of the eight menus in the menu bar and the 'VLC - Controller' window that opens up by default. This section outlines what VLC can do for you (at V0.8.6a current active is V) and will be completed as I check the use of menu options.

The ten menu bar options are listed below along with the main interesting capabilities under each menu item:

* VLC which allows you to check for an updated application, to access the preferences, and to add an interface.
* File which allows you to open a media file, or an associated file (such as subtitles). It also has a wizard to allow the streaming of video, or the capturing of a streamed video to a file.
* Edit which does nothing VLC-specific.
* View which allows you to hide or show various options like previous/next buttons, shuffle and repeat, audio effects, sidebar, as well as customize what you see in 'playlist table columns'.
* Playback allows you do do all the things you might expect from a video player; some of these features are duplicated graphically in the 'Controller' window.
* Audio allows you to control the audio level, as well as the output device and the audio track to use from the input.
* Video allows you to control the video display on your screen, as well as which device to display on, and which video source to show in that display.
* Subtitles allows you to add subtitle files to your video, as well as change the appearance of subtitle text for your video.
* Window allows you to display seven helper windows that will display information about VLC's activity, and control more detail of that activity.
* Help gives access to the help that came with the installation, the help info on the VideoLAN site, and access to interaction mechanisms with the VLC developers.

In general, many users find that they can get what they want from VLC "straight out of the box", and may only want more advanced controls after becoming familiar with the regular interface.

Keyboard Shortcuts
You can find most of the keyboard shortcuts by taking a look at the menus. Additional hotkeys are defined in the section "Hotkeys" of your VLC preferences.

Some handy key combos are:

* Spacebar – pause/unpause the video
* Command + F – toggle fullscreen (Escape will also exit fullscreen)
* Command + Shift + left/right arrow keys – jump the video back/forward about a minute
* Command + Ctrl + left/right arrow keys – jump the video back/forward about ten seconds
* When watching a DVD, and the video window is the front-most window, arrow keys and the enter key will allow you to navigate the DVD menus
* F key – Decrease Audio Delay in milliseconds
* G key – Increase Audio Delay in milliseconds
* H key – Decrease Subtitle Delay
* J key – Increase Subtitle Delay

Latest developments
Streaming Wizard
A streaming wizard has been available since the VLC media player 0.8.4 release. This is available under the "File" menu.

Command line
You can run VLC on Mac OS X using a terminal application (for example Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities) with the following command:
/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC [your options, "--intf=rc" for example]
On most Bourne-like shells, you can set an alias to just vlc with the following command:
alias vlc='/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC'
It can be helpful to add this command to your shell setup file.

This option can also be activated from the "VLC" menu.

Command line examples
Following command does this: Transform video-filter (flip vertically), transcode (save) to file.

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC -I rc --vout-filter=transform --transform-type=vflip /Movie.mov --sout='#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=800,scale=1,acodec=mp4a,ab=128,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:std{access=file,mux=ts,dst=/output.mp4}

-I rc is so that it doesn't open the GUI, but stays on the command line version
--vout-filter defines the filter to use
--transform-type defines the attributes of the transform filter
/Movie.mov is the file to convert
--sout= is the stream output chain
/output.mp4 is the output file name

Another Example
I had a heck of a time getting this to work the way I wanted it. I kept attempting a command-line execution of VLC to only get the following response (not what I wanted):
VLC media player 2.0.2 Twoflower (revision 2.0.2-9-gd1b4a63)
[0x100283cd0] [cli] lua interface: Listening on host "*console".
VLC media player 2.0.2 Twoflower
Command Line Interface initialized. Type `help' for help.

What I wasn't doing apparently was specifying the location of the source movie.

Eventually I ran this:

vlc /Users/username/Desktop/my_movie.mp4 --intf=rc --sout "#transcode{vcodec=VP80,vb=800,scale=1,acodec=vorbis,ab=128,channels=2}:std{access=file,mux="ffmpeg{mux=webm}",dst=my_first_transcoded_movie.webm}"

HINT:<br>
This would be the same as if you didn't have an alias for vlc that pointed to the actual Applications executable:

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC /Users/username/Desktop/mymovie.mp4 --intf=rc --sout "#transcode{vcodec=VP80,vb=800,scale=1,acodec=vorbis,ab=128,channels=2}:std{access=file,mux="ffmpeg{mux=webm}",dst=my_first_transcoded_movie.webm}"

Hopefully, I'll add to this post when the transcoding finishes and I see my results (I have no idea if I've got the correct options for vp8/vorbis webm-container transcoding).....

No Dock
Note that you can replace the "VLC" at the end of the path with "clivlc" to suppress the launch of any Mac-like interface.
VLC won't even appear in the Dock then.

When transcoding, clivlc should be used if running VLC from the command line crashes with a Bus error.

You can also specify the option -I rc on the "VLC" executable.

VLC supports many kinds of subtitles.

Media with included subtitles
Many types of media can have embedded subtitles. VLC can read subtitles for the following media formats:
*DVD
*SVCD
*OGM files
*Matroska (MKV) files

Subtitles are enabled by default in VLC media player. To disable them, go to the Video menu, and to Subtitles track. All available subtitles tracks will be listed. Select "Disable" to turn off the subtitles. Depending on the media, a description (language, for example) might be available for the track.

To disable subtitles by default, select "Preferences", then "Show All". Select "Input/Codecs". On the "Subtitle Track ID" selection window, change the value to "0". (NOTE: Changing the value in the "Subtitle Track" menu will not disable the subtitle file.)

VLC under Linux:

VLC under OSX:

VLC under Windows:

DVD and SVCD subtitles are merely images, so you won't be able to change anything for them. OGM and Matroska subtitles are rendered text, so you will be able to change several options.

Text rendering options can be changed in the Preferences in the Tools tab. To adjust the font preference check the All bullet in the Show Settings box, and then click Subtitles/OSD. You can then set the font and its size under Text Renderer. For the font, you have to select a font file. In Windows, they can be found in C:\Windows\Fonts. Under MacOS X, they are in /System/Library/Fonts. Sizes can be set either relatively or as a number of pixels.

Subtitle text rendering preferences under Windows, VLC 1.1.5

You need to restart your stream for the font modifications to take effect.

Subtitles files
While modern file formats like Matroska or OGM can handle subtitles directly, older formats like AVI can't. Therefore, a number of subtitles files formats have been created. You need two files: the
video file and the subtitles file that only contains the text of the subtitles and timestamps.

VLC can handle these types of subtitles files:
*MicroDVD
*SubRIP
*SubViewer
*SSA
*Sami
*Vobsub (this one is quite special: it is not made from text but from images, which means that you can't change the fonts)

To open a subtitles file, use the Advanced Open dialog box (Menu File, Open file). Select your file by clicking on the Browse button. Then, check the Subtitle options checkbox and click on the "Settings" button.

You can then select the subtitles file by clicking the Browse button. You can also set a few options like character encoding, alignment and size.

An alternative is loading subtitles from the Subtitles Track menu item under the Video tab.

Note: For Vobsub subtitles, you need to select the .idx file, not the .sub file.
Encoding, alignment and size won't have any effect for Vobsub subtitles.

Font can be changed as explained in the previous section.
