== Embedding the VLC plugin in your webpage ==

The VLC plugin can be directly embedded in your webpage :

You then have to use the official Mozilla/ActiveX api documented here : http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:WebPlugin

But, if you need '''controls''' (buttons, slidebar...), you have to use the '''open source revolunet VLCcontrols''' library.

* the code resides @github : https://github.com/revolunet/VLCcontrols
* you have some demo here : http://revolunet.github.com/VLCcontrols

Usage exemple :

Note the fullscreen is currently broken in VLC plugin itself (VLC>1.1)

I've created this small javascript library to allows you to easyly add the VLC plugin in your web pages.

Here's how you add the control to your page :

* first, download the [http://code.revolunet.com/VLCobject/VLCobject.js source] and extract it to your website
* then, create a simple html test page like this on your server :

<div id="vlccontent">This text is replaced by the VLC player.

this should create a player object and launch a movie when the pages open ;)

* You can find a demo here : http://vlc.revolunet.com (some demo medias specially for french free.fr users)
* check out the docs here : http://code.revolunet.com/VLCobject/EN
I've created this small javascript library to allows you to easyly add the VLC plugin in your web pages.

Here's how you add the control to your page :

* first, download the [http://code.revolunet.com/VLCobject/VLCobject.jssource] and extract it to your
* then, create a simple html test page like this on your server :

<div id="vlccontent">This text is replaced by the VLC player.

this should create a player object and launch a movie when the pages open ;)

* You can find a demo here : http://vlc.revolunet.com (some demo medias specially for french free.fr users)
* check out the docs here : http://code.revolunet.com/VLCobject/EN

If you want to add controls, use VLCcontrols library (see below)

== Adding controls : the VLCcontrols javascript library ==

This lib add commons controls to the VLCobject : Play, Pause, Stop, Volume, Seekbar, Debug...

The doc and code is available here : http://code.revolunet.com/VLCcontrols/EN

You just have to add one line of script to add the controls to your VLCobject instance :

<div id="vlccontent">This text is replaced by the VLC player.

var myvlc = new VLCObject("mymovie", "400", "200", "0.8.6");
myvlc.addParam("MRL","http://code.revolunet.com/VLCjs/rambo.mpg");
myvlc.write("vlccontent");
var myvlccontrols = new VLCcontrols(myvlc);

Revolunet:

{{howto|make a thumbnail}}
==How to create a thumbnail from a video==

For all those people wanting a thumbnail from a video, use the following command (Windows):

vlc -V image --start-time 0 --stop-time 1 --image-out-format jpg --image-out-ratio 24 --image-out-prefix snap test.mpg vlc:quit

===What it does:===

When {{VLC}} runs it 'plays' the video for one second without actually showing the video on screen, and then quits, leaving us with a file named 'snap000000.jpg', containing an image of the first frame of the video.

===How its works:===

First select the image output with: '''-V image''' or '''--vout image'''.

Next set the interval (in seconds) you want an image from with: '''--start-time 0 --stop-time 1'''
In my example the first second of the video. In that case you could omit the parameter --start-time. If you want an image from the 5th second fill in: '''--start-time 5 --stop-time 6'''

The image format will be .jpg because i provided: '''--image-out-format jpg'''. You could specify '''--image-out-format png''' to get a .png-image instead.

'''--image-out-ratio 24''' specifies we want one image out of 24. In my case the video contains 24 images per second so this is the right value. If your video has more images per seconds you should increase this value to prevend you get more images as one. If the number is too high (for example 500) it still produces only one image, so the actual value is not so important as long as it is higher then the images per second.

'''--image-out-prefix snap''' specifies the filename must start with 'snap'. You can prefix with a path, for example c:\snap and resulting images will be created there.

You can specify '''--no-image-out-replace'''. In that case Vlc produces the file 'snap.jpg'. This will prevent VLC from creating multiple images.

'''test.mpg''' specifies the video to play and finally '''vlc:quit''' forces vlc to quit when ready.
