Correct English?
Perhaps someone would like to have a look over this and correct the English where needed? An immediate example being that, unlike with subversion, 'check out' is two words, not one. Just may be slightly clearer if the English is tidied up and would perhaps persuade more people to edit the wiki? Just a suggestion :D Tek 12:29, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

when in doubt, hyphenate LOL.... but seriously, both are correct at times, but likely you are correct since the 8-letter word context unlikely to happen on this wiki (checkout is where you pay for items being bought.) My Point being: the error wouldn't be caught "spell-checking" the text... so give the editors a break. Homophones are a pet peeve of mine but since the editors are volunteers, i give them a little lee-way --the Great and Almighty qazwiz (talk) 04:29, 16 June 2017 (CEST)
Request: FAQ
... espically listing all feature in VLC that are NOT available that are in other tools

such a matrix would be useful to present at the download page, allow people to quickly decide they get what tyhey wanted and if not to NOT download something that will frustrure them

example:

right now I am overburdened with episodes that are 550MB that ought be either 340MB or even smaller.... there are few types of vido content worthy of that much disk space...

Request: future features (if not present)
what would be a really cool feature...?

after I watch something VLC asks if I want to archive it, and if so at what resulation and where to save it...

if I want it gone, then it skips the refuse basket, gets off the drive completely without having me do that typical two-step ...and at which point you could accumulate interest/worthiness statistics reflecting enjoyment (negative, positivs, my demographic, et al, all of which the script writers really want no matter what source...

otherwise if I deem it worth disk space, then I can watch soething else whilst the harddisk is spun through the file(s) to compress them as I wished

given how it could then be easily be adjusted into a batch process, i should be able to point to a folder (or folder of folders) with gudielines of which thing ought be stripped dowe for sake of clearing up space.... given new viewing platforms, 550MB for most episodes is overkill and too long to copy over to an IPAD to mention just one

example of low res show already downgraded by the production methods... SCI FI SANCUARTY... not worth more than 177MB per episode.... somehow it is posted as 1.03 GB... where and how and who? sxtunned I am
Wrong vlcInstallDirectory
If a .Net program using VLanControl is started from a network share like "\\server\share\program.exe", "vlcInstallDirectory" is
calculated falsely.

A solution can be like below:

<pre>
static NativeLibVlc()
{

/* - */ //NativeLibVlc.vlcInstallDirectory = Path.GetDirectoryName(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().CodeBase).Substring(6);
/* + */ NativeLibVlc.vlcInstallDirectory = Application.StartupPath;
}
</pre>
Homophones are a pet peeve of mine but since the editors are volunteers, i give them a little lee-way --the Great and Almighty qazwiz (talk) 04:27, 16 June 2017 (CEST)
Panel disappeared in Full Screen
Initially when i installed VLC, the panel was being displayed at the bottom in Full Screen mode.
Once, i clicked the running time in the panel to see the remaining time of the movie.
Immediately after that the panel disappeared.
Later, i can't get the panel in Full Screen mode.

Introduction
VLC is a very popular, but quite large and complex piece of software.<br />
It uses a large number of 3rd party libraries.

VLC development is open source, and then a large community of developers worldwide contribute to it.<br />
However, entering a project such as VLC can be long and complex for new developers.

This guide seeks to help understanding the VLC code base and VLC internals to quickly get up to speed.<br />

I will be importing all the "Play HowTo" and "Streaming HowTo" to the wiki in an attempt to have uptodate docs. Please don't add or edit pages before the import is done (should be done tomorrow). Dionoea 00:49, 7 November 2006 (CET)
Comedian spammer?
Removed following line from the Documentation page: Documentation is like sex: when it is good, it is very, very good; and when it is bad, it is better than nothing.. It was an addition from what looks like spammer, User:Thresh. I didn't want to just delete it ... ;) --Popol0909 12:50, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
not too familiar with THIS wiki but have some suggestions for documentation
first, i think the HowTo articles about Skins should be incorporated into documentation. they were probably written before the wiki was around but, in my opinion, every HowTo should be on a wiki for faster updating and correcting.

Second, and more importantly, the links mentioned contain broken links. I found that links to explain elipticals were pointing to an EDU extention (provider is a college/university) but whn the writer left his student/ &or /teaching position the account was closed.
I did find the new location for the gentleman, http://paulbourke.net/ but cannot add it to the documentation nor can i figure out the exact page that the documentation was linking to despite there even being an archive area leading me to believe that SOMEWHERE in the site, the originally linked page has been preserved

PLEASE could someone who knows skin creation investigate and add/update a HowTo with the desired links

Immediate need possible name: MASH-UP

i have an immediate need for a media player that will open a file and start playing the file at a specified start point, until a specified end point, possibly with optional skip points. example of use: Doctor King's famous "I have a dream" speech could be queued up to play just a couple sentences or even play a "readers digest" condensed version of the speech, without creating external samples.

defaults (for non-specified info) would of course be START-POINT: 0:00, END-POINT: file-length, SKIP-POINT: NUL SKIP-LENGTH: ZERO/NUL

of course, my example could just as easily use samples but what If the speech was copyrighted?
there are a lot of 'discussions' about the legality of MASH-UPS. While I believe most mash-ups are within their rights to create a new file I do question the legality of distributing said MASH-UPS, especially when 'someone' gains without compensation to the 'original authors'. (and if "I" question the legality, you KNOW someone will at least TRY to sue) While a legal battle does not scare me, only a fool would prefer a legal battle.

the ability to make an input file that would instruct what portions of what files are to be played (and what order) would require the user to 'own' the original media already (or subscribe to a service that would provide the original media) thus circumventing the question of compensation to the original artist(s).

<big>suggested development schedule</big>
# audio output from files physically owned audio files
# audio output from audio AND video files physically owned
# adding repository access, see NOTE below (with or without support for subscribed services)
# video output from video input
# video output from mixed media input (a virtual slideshow including video snapshots, standalone pictures, and possible even video clips with possible multiple audio sources also)

NOTE: a repository would be anywhere other than the physical computer (or media) running VLC simular to Linux repositories and thus should be considered stable to be added as a repository but would be treated as if the repository was just another disk on the main machine
