==Building HTML pages for Mozilla/Firefox/Internet Explorer/Safari ==

The following description works for any of the browsers VLC supports. The JavaScript API has been unified between Mozilla/Firefox/IE (ActiveX) and Safari, thus targeting at all of the major OS out there.

This is only valid for {{VLC}} version 0.8.6 and above.

Additionally to viewing video on all pages, you can build custom pages that will use the advanced features of the plugin, using Javascript functions to control playback or extract information from the
plugin.

== API description ==
The vlc plugin exports several objects that can be accessed for setting and getting information. When used improperly the API's will throw an exception that includes a string that explains what happened. For example when asking for vlc.input.length when there is no playlist item playing.

The vlc plugin knows the following objects:

*'''audio''': Access audio properties.
*'''input''': Access input properties.
*'''playlist''': Access playlist properties.
*'''subtitle''': Access subtitle properties.
*'''video''': Access video properties.
*'''video.marquee''': Access marquee video filter properties.
*'''video.logo''': Access logo video filter properties.
*'''log''': Access log properties.
*'''messages''': Access to log message properties.
*'''iterator''': Access to log iterator properties.

The following JavaScript code shows howto get a reference to the vlc plugin. This reference can then be used to access the objects of the vlc plugin.
==Build HTML pages that use the plugin (VLC version up to 0.8.5)==

'''WARNING:''' the APIs described in this section are '''deprecated''', do not use. They no longer work on recent VLC version (> 0.8.5), either it being the ActiveX (Internet Explorer)/ Safari or Mozilla based browsers.

The following API description is only valid uptill version 0.8.5 of the mozilla plugin.

Additionally to viewing video on all pages, you can build custom pages that will use the advanced features of the plugin, using Javascript functions to control playback or extract information from the
plugin.

The vlc plugin supports the following function calls:
*'''play()''': Start playing media in the plugin.
*'''pause()''': Pause playback.
*'''stop()''': Stop media playback.
*'''fullscreen()''': Switch the video to full screen.
*'''set_volume(vol)''': Set the volume. '''vol''' has to be an int in the 0-200 range.
*'''get_volume()''': Get the current volume setting.
*'''mute()''': Toggle volume muting.
*'''set_int_variable(var_name, value)''':
*'''set_bool_variable(var_name, value)''':
*'''set_str_variable(var_name, value)''':
*'''get_int_variable(var_name)''':
*'''get_bool_variable(var_name)''':
*'''get_str_variable(var_name)''':

Here are a few examples of HTML pages that use the
Mozilla plugin.

===Example 1===

In this example, the plugin will read an HTTP stream inside the web page. If the user goes fullscreen, he will have to press ''f'' or double-click on the video to go back in normal view.
== Intro ==
Although vlc is moving [[Qt_and_GTK|away]] from wxwidgets this is an attemp to move wxwidgets towards vlc (libvlc to be more precise)..
The libvlc API is fairly new and VERY promissing.. It exports ALL the functionality of vlc into a nice c API .
On the other hand wxWidgets is a very rich [http://www.wxwidgets.org/docs/hierarchy_stable_image.htm] ( and also community based ) growing X platform library. It covers the 3 basic platforms (MSW, LINUX, MAC) and more[http://wiki.wxwidgets.org/Supported_Platforms]..

== wxVLCBackend ==
wxVLCBackend v2 is a wxMediaCtrl backend. The latter is a stub media player in wxWidgets and provides an interface for various kinds of backends (gssteamer, wmp,...).
wxVLCBackend maybe integrated in the official wxwidgets code..
The backend code provides a guide to integrade libvlc in other c/c++ gui frameworks as well. In fact the only TRICKY part was to get a low-level hadle for the drawable surface.

'''Right now''' (29/10/08) The code is not mature enough for publication. There are some stability issues. To correct them i've created a mini (Poc) wxWidgets based app to isolate these issues, wxvlc_test.

==wxvlc_test==
wxvlc_test is a simple wxWidgets based app. It has a textbox where you give a media filename and a play, stop button to control playback. In my tests wxvlc_test '''crashes''' when starting playing ( somewhere inside libavcodec library with no other dubuging symbols ) *some* avis.. On the other hand vlc plays these same files smoothly.

***Tests were done on vlc-0.9.5

My intentions for this publication are :
a) to test the glue code on other systems ( my tests are on '''linux ONLY''' so dont ask me, but windows could be tested too )
b) to check the glue code correctness by a vlc internalls well-knower (maybe i miss something,
cause i cant explain that libavcodec crashes)

Information for wxvlc_test is provided in the README as well

=== wxvlc_test v0.1 source ===

The program is provided under patch format here. Copy and paste the following to a new patch file ( say wxvlc.patch) and "apply" it with
patch -Np0 < ../wxvlc.patch
this will create a new dir with all the needed files inside
+This is a mini library for libvlc integration into wxWidgets apps . Its a poC
+ and is intented to test it for stability. It is part of the wxVLCMediaBackend v2
+ for integration into wxMediaCtrl as a Bakend...[It is not published yet (10.08)]
+
+
+--USAGE
+-Make sure you have wxWIdgets 2.8 installed (don't know for later versions,
+but i think 2.6 should work).
+-Make sure you have vlc installed.. Ok we test on linux, so it means libvlc is
+ in path as well as the plugins.
+ You need to comment some lines at Makefile ( Noted) for windows and make
+ sure the linker can "see" libvlc.dll. It is not tested so don't ask me .
==Intro==
This is the page I will use to document the progress of my Summer of Code 2008 project. Feel free to send me ideas, comments or any inspiration.then u eat shit and crap it back out again

==Project Abstract==
VLC has fast become one of the most common video players available for 'non-technical' users. The ability to watch streams easily and efficiently is a huge advantage for VLC. The ability to timeshift streams has been added to the latest unstable builds, however it is vastly underfeatured and not nearly ready for release. The features would enhance VLC to a new level which would allow a new set of users to use it.

I propose to extend & improve the PVR capabilities of VLC. The current version is severely lacking in functionality and performance. There is a very basic timeshift capability already. To this I will add the ability to randomly seek through the buffer (fast forward, rewind, etc ). The ability to save buffers and continue recording to the new file will be added. These recordings will be in any chosen format. These features will help anyone who uses VLC to watch TV shows to easily turn their client into a MythTV/Media Centre style client.
I will tie the module in with the user interface properly so that the state of the buffer and the current position can be easily seen.
I then plan to begin work on a framework that combines all of these features into a simple interface easily accessible with a remote control. The interface will combine VLM and the media library into a single easily accesible place. The interface will have the ability to 'talk' to the server sending commands such as changing tv channel or switching input source.

With this and the completion of VLM and the playlist managing system VLC will have the capabilities to become a fully featured PVR system with the massive advantage of it being run off a streaming server if need be.
==Current Status==
End of Week 8

===Timeshift===
* Mostly Done - Testing Phase!

===Interface===
* Now we have a full on menu system (see screenshots).
* Can control most VLC things from the system.
* It could(should?) work if you pull it off the git repository. hit F5 during movie play and a menu should slide into view with some functionality.
Command line vlc --vout=pvrvout -I pvrgui <file>
* Now is time to make it all functional and nice. Beginning with the text.

===Current Problems===
* Image drawing STILL isnt working. I hate this bug. (loading works I think).
* When the movie is paused the thread priority drops and the animations dont work well anymore.
* Major problem with closing GLX. Traced to an nvidia driver problem. I have found a work around thought, so that will be an option. Hopefully they fix the drivers one day.
* got to remove FTGL

* Modifying an number variable

==Details==
The plan is to work on two parts.
===Timeshift Module===
Initially the timeshift access module will be improved considerably. Bugs ironed out and additional functionality added. This is beign done a bit at a time throughout.
===PVR Interface===
Then a new interface will be added. My current idea (still to be discussed with more knowledgable developers) is to build onto the QT interface.
Firstly a good fullscreen interface (potentially to be worked on with the summer of code project focusing on that) that clearly displays the current buffer state. ie. where we are in the current buffer, buffer size, recording information etc...
In addition a new widget will be created that contains the PVR-style menus. These will be nice and big for use on a tv. There will be screens to access music & videos (from the library still to be finished), streams, options, pictures & VLM. There will potentially also be a new sort of hotkeys interface specifically for the PVR, so that you can have specific hotkeys linked to a remote control when watching fullscreen.

==Project Timeline==
===Time Planning===
Basically

'''Pre-May 26''' Because of my excellent southern-hemisphere timetable have started working on code a bit. see status for progress.

'''May 26:''' Program Start. Also the start of my exams. Will not be working this week.

'''June 1 -> 13:''' Still have exams, but only 2 in this long period and its not very busy with them. Will start working properly on the project.

'''June 14 - July 7:''' Work Work

''' July 7:''' Mid term evaluations

''' July 8 -> Beginning of August:''' Work nice and hard.

'''Beginning of August -> August 11:''' Finish off. could have tests here as well depending on university. 11 August is googles suggested pencils down date.

'''August 11 -> August 18:''' Make code excellent.

'''August 19:''' no more coding

===Timeline===
This will be expanded upon, specifically the PVR Interface section will be much more detailed closer to the time, when a specific plan is developed.
{| class="wikitable"

{{Module|name=http|type=Control interface|description=Allows control of VLC over a http connection}}
It is possible to [[Control VLC via a browser]] via an extra interface which can be enabled by going to Settings > Add Interface > Web Interface.

To use this interface as the primary interface, launch VLC with the parameter "-I http" or set http to be the primary interface via the preferences (in versions .8+ you go to Preferences > Interface > General > Interface module: http remote control interface. To launch it as a secondary interface you should launch VLC with the parameter "--extraintf=http" or set http as an extra-interface in the Preferences area mentioned above.

Now when you start VLC, a web interface will be created on port 8080. The options --http-addr and --http-port can be used to specify an IP and the port on which you want to run the interface.

It is now also possible to customize the Web interface. See the html pages in share/html (within the VLC directory for Windows, within the VLC.app package on Mac OS X and somewhere in /usr/local for Linux). This can be a very cool interface if you spent some time developing nice UI elements. If you would like to contribute a new 'Default' html interface, you are also very welcome (keep it small).

An additional theme has been created (by Lucas Steigmeyer a.k.a. Plezops) specifically for PDA's or PSP's in mind. This additonal theme has a grey theme and will fit nicely on most portable versions of web browsers. The theme has the layout reordered to fit the screen better. You may download this theme from [http://www.orrentdesign.com/outsideResources/VLC_Graphite.zip OrrentDesign.com]. A readme file is included. View for install instructions and other info.

''Note:'' On versions of VLC (windows) that are greater than .8 (possibly previous versions, though not confirmed) the HTTP interface index file is stored in the "http" folder in the VLC folder. There are no help files bundled with the download however you may find help files in the online Wiki and how-to, or readme's.

''Note:'' A new http interface is available since 0.8.5. However this new interface does not work on handhelp PDA's running the Windows Mobile OS, it also does not work with javascript turned off in your browser. If you want to use the old interface, use <nowiki>http://<ip>:<port>/old/</nowiki>.

For more information about the HTTP interface, see the document "VLC Play-Howto", the paragraph [http://videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch04.html#id295619"The HTTP interface"] in chapter 4 ("Advanced use of VLC") and appendix B [http://videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/apb.html"Building pages for the HTTP interface"]. See also [[Documentation:Play_HowTo/Building_Pages_for_the_HTTP_Interface|the updated version of that appendix on the wiki]].

Windows Media Video (WMV) is a generic name for the set of proprietary streaming video technologies developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Windows Media framework.

WMV is not built solely on Microsoft in-house technology. From version 7 (WMV1), Microsoft has used its own non-standard version of MPEG-4 Part 2. The video stream is often combined with an audio stream of Windows Media Audio.

WMV files are played by players such as MPlayer or Windows Media Player, the latter being only available for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh systems. Many third-party players exist for various platforms such as Linux that use the FFmpeg implementation of the WMV codecs.

Raw WMV video is packed into an AVI or Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) container. The resulting files may be named .avi if it is an AVI-contained file, or .wmv or .asf if it is an ASF file, but .wmv files are to be ASF files with audio/video content only.

WMV is found in the AVI file container when encoded with Microsoft's proprietory Windows Media Video 9 VCM software for Windows. Microsoft's Windows Media Player for the Mac does not support all WMV encoded files since it supports only the ASF file container.

WMV includes digital rights management facilities intended to protect intellectual property rights.

Microsoft has submitted Version 9 codec to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), for approval as an international standard. (As of Jan 2005, the SMPTE is reviewing the submission under the draft-name "VC-1"). This codec is also used to distribute high definition video on standard DVDs in a format Microsoft has branded as WMV HD. This WMV HD content can be played back on computers or compatible DVD players.

The Trial version of standards were published by SMPTE in September 2005. A reference decoder implementation and test sequences are also available.

'''VLC's Mac OS X interface''' is designed quite similar to the interfaces of other ports. At present, almost all features available in the WxWindows-interface can be used in the Mac OS X one as well. Only an ''advanced interface'' does not exist at the moment, but will probably be added later on. Skins aren't supported in this port too. That's hopefully going to change after the 0.8.2 release.

==Keyboard Shortcuts==
You can find most of the keyboard shortcuts by taking a look at the menus. Additional hotkeys are defined in the section "Hotkeys" of your VLC preferences.

Some handy key combo's are:

* You can use the spacebar to start/pause the video.
* When in fullscreen you can use the escape key to exit the fullscreen state
* When you are watching a DVD and the video window is the frontmost window you can use the arrow keys and the enter key to navigate the DVD menus.

==Problems Running Some MPEG and AVI Files==
Occasionally you will come across a file that gives the following error in VLC:

''no suitable decoder module for fourcc `undf'.''

''VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.''

Users may find that movies giving this error may play the video track only. This error can appear because VLC 0.8.1 does not yet support the "Voxware Metasound" audio codec. If you look at the error log, and find "Voxware Metasound" in one of the error lines, then the video you are trying to play has this problem.

It appears that, as of February 2005, if a Mac user also wants to play the sound track of such a movie, Windows Media Player 7.1 needs to be used, which means running classic. Later versions (at least WMP 9) removed support for all formats and codecs that are not Windows Media, which included removal of AVI and MPEG support.

Neither VLC, Windows Media Player 9, MPlayer, nor aparrently any other movie player for the Mac supports the "Voxware Metasound" codec on Mac OS X.
