Gentoo

2005-10-18T08:06:21Z

Minglang:

Since version 0.6.0 and up VLC is distributed with an ebuild for the http://www.gentoo.org Portage system. This ebuild is not an official ebuild approved by Gentoo, but only a guideline for the Gentoo Maintainers. We hope that with our support, the Gentoo team will be able to respond faster to new releases and new features. But if you are confident enough, you can try to use it yourself. Instructions are always for the latest ebuild.

Some pointers

* The ebuild is located at the root of the .tar.gz package and called vlc-versionnr.ebuild
* If you want features, then be sure to set some USE variables. The following USE variables are supported: arts qt ncurses dvd gtk nls 3dfx matrox svga fbcon esd kde X alsa ggi oggvorbis gnome xv oss sdl fbcon aalib slp truetype v4l lirc wxwindows imlib matroska dvb pvr mozilla mad debug tcltk
* VLC links statically against CVS versions of http://ffmpeg.sf.net and http://mpeg2dec.sf.net . Current installations of these software packages will not be affected.
* the best interface is the Interface. I suggest you prefix the emerge command with USE="wxwindows".
* for Video4Linux? support prefix your emerge command with USE="v4l" .
* for matroska support prefix your emerge command with USE="matroska" and be sure to have http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=63722&highlight=matroska
* if you want the Interface then prefix your emerge command with USE="wxwindows imlib".

Windows

2005-10-18T08:00:09Z

Minglang:

The Windows port of VLC usually starts up with the WxWindows interface which is used in the Linux one as well. The user can decide to use the Skins interface instead to be able to modify the interface according to his or her mood.

Keyboard shortcuts in the Windows (directx) video output
Note: these shortcuts are only default settings and can be customized (along with many others). To tweak hotkeys settings, go to Settings->Preferences->Hot keys

* Left/Right/Up/Down/Enter: DVD menus navigation keys
* Page Up/Page Down: seek (10 secs)
* Home/End: Beginning/End of file
* Space: Pause/Play
* a/A/z/Z: Volume Control
* f/F: fullscreen
* q/Q: quit vlc
* Esc: exit fullscreen/Stop input

How to associate media files to VLC
Warning: do this association only if you realy know what you are doing!

VLC hasn't got a module to associate files, so that if you click on a file VLC opens. But you can
do it by yourself, follow this istructions:

* Open a text editor like Notepad.

* Copy this text:
<pre>
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ASF]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ASX]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.AVI]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.DIVX]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.MPEG]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.MPG]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.VOB]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.WMV]
@="VlcFile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VlcFile]
@="VLC File"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VlcFile\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Programs\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe,0"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VlcFile\shell\Open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VlcFile\shell\Open\command]
@="C:\\Programs\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe \"%L\""
</pre>

* Modify the strings C:\\Programs\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe to match to your VLC installation.

* Save as vlc.reg.

* Execute vlc.reg (ad it to you registry).

* Enjoy VLC :)

Note: This associate asf, asx, avi, divx, mpeg, mpg, vob and wmv files, if you get the idea you can associate any file you want.

----

OR

You can also right-click the file you want to open with VLC, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, click Change.

Click the name of the program (VLC) in which you want the file to open.

This change affects all files that have the same file name extension as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens a .jpg file, all .jpg files will open in this program.

You can also change the program that opens a file by right-clicking the file, clicking Open With, and then clicking the program name.

If VLC is not displayed, click Browse to locate it on your hard drive.

Alternatively, you can just associate media files on install.

Interfaces

2005-09-23T03:52:54Z

Minglang:

You can enable these interfaces if you want. Most have very specific usage options and many people will never want to use them, but they sure can be useful.

* Web Interface
* Mouse Gestures
* Console

Usually an interface is launched as the primary interface (vlc --intf interfacemodule). However you can also launch more than one interface:
vlc --intf wx --extraintf sap,telnet,http

This will launch VLC with the default wxWidgets interface, but will also launch the sap, telnet and web interface in addition to the wxWidgets one.

IP

2005-09-23T03:24:35Z

Minglang:

IP stands for Internet Protocol. It's the protocol the Internet was built on.

IP allows large, geographically diverse networks of computers to communicate with each other quickly and economically over a variety of physical links. An Internet Protocol Address (IP address) is the numerical address by which a location in the Internet is identified. Computers on the Internet use IP addresses to route traffic and establish connections among themselves; people generally use the human-friendly names made possible by the Domain Name System. Source: ICANN.

IPv4 is the original implementation. Gradually everyone is trying to go to IPv6 which has way more potential addresses. With this new version every electronic device in the world is supposed to be able to get an IP address assigned. IPv6 supports techniques like multicast, anycast, DHCP and IPsec natively.

IPv4 addresses look like:

192.0.34.163

IPv6 addresses look like:

fe80::230:65ff:fe6c:fa88

Higher level protocols like: TCP, UDP, RTP, RTSP et etc etc, all use IP.
IP has 4 different methods it can be used in:
* unicast
* broadcast
* multicast
* anycast (IPv6 only)
<pre>
There are several more sending paradigms (not implemented in the IP standards?). These include manycast
(multicast/anycast mix), groupcast, somecast (realtime adaptive reliable multicasting).
The freaks can google them.

Talk:Subtitles

2005-09-23T03:23:25Z

Minglang:

Users should be warned that the interface for using .srt files is deplorable. If you double click the media file or use Quick Open File you never see the opportunity to select a corresponding subtitles file. In the relatively unique file browser that appears if you select Open File there is a checkbox item for setting characteristics for subtitles, including the specification of the file containing the subtitles. That is fine but there needs to be a way of specifying a subtitle file for a media file after it has been opened or many people will doubt the feature even exists.
