{{mux|id=flv|encoder=n}}
'''Flash Video''' is a file format mainly used for playing data in a Flash player on a webpage. It has the extension '''.flv'''.

There are two types of flv files, the one based on [[H.263]] (which exists since Flash 6) and another based on [[VP6]] (which was introduced in Flash 8).
In Flash 9 Update 3 Adobe added support for MPEG-4, thus since this version flv files may also contain [[H.264]] and HE-[[AAC]].

==Compatibility==

H.263 flash video is supported by the latest VLC, with some bugs. There is a [[Fixing .flv to .avi with FFmpeg|workaround]] using [[ffmpeg]] for this. VP6 is also supported by VLC from version 0.8.6b and above.

However, seeking, (that is, jumping to a position in the video) is not supported until 0.9.0 in either codecs.

==Streaming Flash Video With VLC==

Starting from VLC revision 18876 (which means 0.9.0-svn after 17/02/2007), you can stream flash with VLC. You also need to build VLC with a fairly recent ffmpeg version (r7593 21/01/2007 or newer).

You can then use the following command line to do HTTP Flash Video streaming:
% ./vlc <input> --sout "#transcode{vcodec=FLV1,acodec=mp3}:std{access=http,dst=/stream.flv}"
You can then point any flash based player to that stream using <nowiki>http://192.2.0.1:8080/stream.flv</nowiki> where 192.2.0.1 is the server IP address.

Note that flash only accepts 3 audio sample rates (44.1 kHz, 22.05 kHz and 11.025 kHz). If your source audio uses something else, muxing will fail. You can change the sampling rate by adding samplerate=44100 in transcode.

==Making VLC the default player for FLV files for MAC and Windows 7, 8==

The instructions for making VLC the default player for FLV files can be found at the following links:

Mac
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTVu6bAK3rM

Windows 7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eec6M1D3d9s

Windows 8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ2pKsg2kpQ

Note: this and many other video codecs appear to be disabled and silently not working on Windows binaries, the system won't complain, but all you find is a container with no video stream in it.

== Play a file ==

To play a file, open the ''Media'' menu, and select the ''Open File'' menu item.

[[File:Open_File.PNG]]

An ''Open File'' dialog box will appear. Select the file you want to open and select ''Open''.

[[File:Open_Dialog_Box.PNG]]

VLC will then start playing the designated file. An alternative is to simply drag 'n' drop your file into the VLC main interface or the playlist window from the file explorer (Finder on Mac OS X).

== Play a CD/DVD/VCD ==

To play a CD, VCD or a DVD, open the ''Media'' menu and select ''Open Disc'' menu item. In the ''Open Disk'' dialog box, select the type of media (DVD, SVCD/VCD or Audio CD).

[[File:Open_DVD.PNG]]

You can either select the drive in which the media is located by selecting the drive letter from the ''Disc Device'' drop-down list, or you can select the ''Browse'' button, which will open a dialog box that you can use to browse for the media you wish to play.

If you want to start the DVD or VCD playback from a given title and chapter instead of from the beginning, you can set it using the ''Title'' and ''Chapter'' selectors. You can also set the ''Audio'' and ''Subtitles'' track using the selectors. There is also an option for ''No DVD menus'', when reading a DVD.

To start playback select the ''Ok'' button.

== Play a network stream (WebRadio, WebTV, etc.) ==

To open a network stream, open the ''Media'' menu and select the ''Open Network Stream'' menu item.

[[File:Open_Network_Strem.PNG]]

A dialog box will then open with three user input boxes. The first one is for the user to select the ''Protocol'' of the stream that they wish to open (HTTP/HTTPS/MMS/FTP/RTSP/RTP/UDP/RDMP). The second box is for the user to input the ''Address'' of the stream and the third one is for the user to select the appropriate port. However in the latest version of VLC (1.1.5), the user only needs to input the ''Address'' (examples are shown in image above).

To begin playback, select the ''Play'' button.

If you get some stuttering during playback, you can try to increase the size of the read buffer. This can be done in the ''Open Network Stream'' dialog box, by firstly checking the ''Show more options'' check box then adjusting the ''Caching'' selector, which allows you to choose the amount of time (in milliseconds) VLC should store data in its buffer before starting playback.

== Play from an acquisition card ==

To play from an acquisition open the ''File'' menu, and select ''Open Capture Device''.

[[File:Open_Acquisition_Card.PNG]]

From here you can choose the ''Capture Mode'' and the ''Video/Audio Device Name''. The user can also adjust the configuration for these devices by clicking ''Configure''. The user is also able to set the size of the video that will be played by the Direct Show plugin and options such as 'Device Properties' and 'Tuner Properties' by clicking ''Advanced Options''.

For Video4Linux devices, you can set the name of the video and audio devices using the "Video device name" and "Audio device name" text inputs. The "Advanced options..." button allows you to select some further settings useful in some rare cases, such as the chroma of the input (the way colors are encoded) and the size of the input buffer.

To use a Hauppauge PVR card, select the PVR tab in the "Open" dialog box. Use the "Device" text input to set the device of the card you want to use. You can set the Norm of the tuner (''PAL, SECAM or NTSC'') by using the "Norm" Drop Down. The Frequency selector allows you to set the frequency of the tuner (in kHz), the bitrate selector to set the bitrate of the resulting encoded stream (in bit/s). The "Advanced Options button allows to set some more settings, such as the size of the encoded video (in pixels), its framerate (in frame per second), the interval between 2 key frames, etc.

To start playback from an acquisition card, click ''Play''.
== [[Image:Windows logo2.jpg|100x100px]] Windows ==

===95, 98, ME===

You can install VLC on Windows 95, 98, or ME operating systems by using [http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page KernelEx].

===2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8===

====Recommended====

The normal and recommended way to install VLC on a Windows operating system is via the installer package.

'''Step 0: Download and launch the installer'''

Download the installer package from the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html VLC download page for Windows]. After you download the installer package, double click on the file to begin the install process. If you're using Windows Vista, 7, or 8 and have UAC enabled, the operating system may prompt you to grant VLC administrator permissions. Click '''Yes''' to continue the installation process.

'''Step 1: Select an installer language'''

Before you can continue, you must select the language that you want the installer to use to display information to you. It is recommended that you select a language that you understand. After you select a language, click '''OK'''.

[[Image:Step-1-select-language.png]]

'''Step 2: Review the Welcome screen'''

The VLC installer recommends that you close all other applications before continuing the installation process. When you're ready to proceed with the installation process, click '''Next'''.

[[Image:Step-2-welcome.png]]

'''Step 3: Read License agreement'''

Read the Terms of Service. Once you're done reading, click '''Next'''.

'''Step 4: Select components'''

Use this menu to customize your install. Choose all of the components you wish to install and whether you want VLC to be your default media player or not. Once you are done, click '''Next'''.

[[Image:Step-4-components.png]]

'''Step 5: Pick a location'''

Click '''Browse...''' to choose the destination installation folder. After you've identified the desired folder, click '''Install'''.

[[Image:Step-5-install-location.png]]

'''Step 5: Now installing'''

Wait as VLC is installed on your machine. It shouldn't take too long. Then click "Show details" to see more information about the progress of the installation.

[[Image:Step-6-installing.png]]

'''Step 7: Installation complete'''

Once installation is complete, you may choose to run VLC or read VLC's release notes. Click '''Finish''' to complete the installation process and close the installer.

[[Image:Step-7-completed.png]]

====Alternative====

If you want to perform an unattended (or silent) installation of VLC, you can do so via a command line interface. Type in "''filename''" /L="''languagecode''" /S. For example, the English installation would look something like '''vlc-2.0.1-win32.exe /L=1033 /S'''.

'''PowerShell'''

Installing VLC using PowerShell is as easy.

[[Image:Step-8-silent-installation-ps.png]]

'''Command Prompt'''

You can also install VLC using the command prompt.
#Double-click on the icon of the package: an icon will appear on your Desktop, right beside your drives.
#Open it and drag the VLC application from the resulting window to the place where you want to install it (it should be '''/Applications''').
