VSG pages are divided into two categories: terminal pages and nonterminal pages.

==Nonterminal Pages==

Nonterminal pages are pages which do not contain solutions. These are pages which prompt the user for more information, directing them to pages which describe their problem in more detail.

A typical nonterminal VSG page should appear as follows:

<nowiki>__NOTOC__</nowiki>

<nowiki>=Title of Page=</nowiki>

(A question prompting the user for more detail on the issue he or she is experiencing)

(At least two VSGEntry objects directing the user to a page with more detail on solving the problem)

==The VSGEntry Template==
The VSGEntry Template is invoked as follows:
<nowiki>{{VSGEntry|Title|Link|Description}}</nowiki>

=== On Mac OS 9 ===

{{faqlink|239006}}
* Sorry, VLC will not work on OS 9, and probably never will. However, Mac OS X is supported - [[Unsupported|Find out Why]]

=== Compiling VLC ===

==== How do I compile VLC? ====

* Look at [http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/ how to compile VLC]. There are pre-compiled (binary / executable) versions [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ here].

==== Mozilla Firefox Plugin ====

* ''Debian:'' All you need is to download the vlc plugin package - mozilla-plugin-vlc ([http://packages.debian.org/stable/graphics/mozilla-plugin-vlc stable release])
* ''All Linux:'' To make the firefox plugin with the vlc player, you will first need the Firefox Development package (from: [http://packages.ubuntu.com/breezy/devel/firefox-dev ubuntu] ...). Then, when you compile, run ./configure with --enable-mozilla, and if needed with --with-mozilla-sdk-path=''/path_to_firefox_sdk''

==== "Missing header file ffmpeg/avcodec.h" and "Missing header file postproc/postprocess.h" Errors ====

* Make sure that you have all the libraries you need.
** '''on ubuntu''': "apt-get install libavcodec-dev libpostproc-dev" will install the needed files (worked on edgy).
* When you run ./configure for [[ffmpeg]], make sure that at least the following flags are set (descriptions of these avaliable from ./configure --help )
./configure --enable-shared --enable-shared-pp --enable-pp --enable-gpl
* The path of ffmpeg is not set. Check if you can locate the file '''libavcodec.pc''' on your computer, and export PKG_CONFIG_PATH to where you found it before running ./configure. For example
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/home/you/ffmpeg/

With vlc-086f, FFmpeg SVN-r13060, on Slamd64 12.0.0, some other changes must be made. These are most likely due to changes in libpostproc.

The ./configure flags for ffmpeg become
./configure --enable-postproc --enable-shared --enable-gpl

Then you must set a symbolic link for postproc. This took me a long time to spot.

root @ svr (/usr/src/vlc-0.8.6f)locate postprocess.h
/usr/local/include/libpostproc/postprocess.h
root @ svr (/usr/src/vlc-0.8.6f)cd /usr/local/include/
root @ svr (/usr/local/include)ln -s libpostproc postproc

==== "cc1: error: invalid option `tune=opteron'" Error on 64-bit systems ====

* One user writes: "From what I can see, the -mtune flag is not available for this type of processor in man gcc. I had to change the configure options comment out all the lines where they set mcpu or mtune flags.) I don't know if this is the correct way to proceed but was the only way for me to get results fast."

* This is not true on all versions of gcc. Try to compile on your platform before making the above changes.

root @ p01 (/usr/src/vlc-0.8.6f)gcc --version
* In configure, there is an x_libraries variable there that is set to "/usr/X11R6/lib" (around line 16371). Because it is a 64 bit system, this variable needs to be /usr/X11R6/lib64. After changing that, it should continue compiling.
=== Installing Skins ===

* Although all information is given on the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skins.php VLC Download skin site], you may miss the note to change preferences to ''skinnable interface''. There is an [http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?p=85603#p85603 article on the forum] which describes the how-to. In short: there is a drop-down option (interface module) in the settings dialog (Interface &rarr; General) which defaults to ''Standard''. Change this and restart.

== Problems Starting VLC ==

=== VLC does not launch on my Mac anymore. What to do? ===

* Please have a look at the [[FAQ_on_MacOSX_only_issues|specific FAQ]], which covers multiple solutions to this issue.

== Error Messages ==

Error messages can be viewed by selecting Messages from the Tools menu.

=== main private error: no sout mux module matched "ts" ===

* This can be an error if '''libdvbpsi''' was not installed when vlc was compiled. To fix this error, install libdvbpsi; then re-compile vlc. [http://developers.videolan.org/libdvbpsi/ libdvbpsi]

=== main dialogs provider error: no dialogs provider module matched "any" ===

* The solution is found in [http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=14733 the forum]

== Problems playing types of files ==

=== WMV files ===

* Starting with VLC media player 0.8.6, the playback of WMV3-encoded videos is available on all platforms. Please note, that encrypted / DRM-protected video-clips still cannot be played. That is due to the nature of DRM and is not about to change, so please do not ask.

=== Real Media files ===

* Realmedia files (.rm, .rpm, etc) are proprietary (ie, copyrighted) file formats, created by RealNetworks. Because of this, VLC can't support them at present.

=== QuickTime Files (.mov) ===

* Mov file doesn't play, but plays ok in QuickTime
** open the url in QuickTime player
** let it decide which datarate is best for your connection
** let it play for a few seconds, then pause it
** open the stream info, copy the url
** open & save that one in VLC

=== Flash Video Files (.flv) ===

* Flash Video support has recently been added (provided through ffmpeg) - to view .flv files you will need version 0.8.4a. Download and install the latest version [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ here].
* VLC still has problems with a few .flv files. If you have problems playing a file in VLC you might be able to change it to an avi using [[ffmpeg]]. See [[Fixing .flv to .avi with Ffmpeg]].
* VLC 0.8.6 provided enhanced Flash Video support on all platforms, so it is probably worth to update if you experience problems with prior releases.

=== Other Files ===

{{faqlink|238663}}
* Make sure that VLC supports that file - look at the [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html list of supported formats]

* Make sure that the file isn't corrupted

== VLC and Other Programs ==

=== AMR ===

* To use [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_Multi-Rate AMR], you'll need to compile vlc and ffmpeg with amr support yourself. This is because the amr license is not compatible with the vlc license.

=== ratDVD ===

* VLC does not support [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RatDVD ratDVD] and is not going to be, both for political and technical reasons.

== Problems Playing DVDs ==

===Unable to play any DVDs===

{{faqlink|239006}}
* ''Linux:'' To play DVDs with VLC in linux, you need to install the libdvdcss package
* ''Linux:'' Make sure you have access rigths to your DVD player. In linux, you can use chmod to edit access rights to your DVD block device:
** <nowiki>#</nowiki> chmod 666 /dev/dvd
** The videolan FAQ seems to suggest you need write access to this device - is this true? If you know, please edit this entry.
* ''Linux:'' Make sure VLC knows where your DVD drive is located (/dev/dvd usually). Go to Settings | Preferences | Input/Codecs | General and under "Default devices" make sure your dvd drive path is entered in the "Default DVD" box. When you go to open a DVD, you should see something like "dvd:///dev/dvd" as the [[media resource locator]] in the "Open:" box near the top of the Open dialog.

=== Playing DVDs from other Region Codes ===

{{faqlink|239426}}
* The ability to play DVDs from all regions depends mostly on your DVD drive, and testing it is usually the quickest way to find out if your DVD drive can do it. Most newer DVD drives are RPC2 drives, which don't allow raw access to the drive untill the drive firmware has done a regioncheck. VLC uses libdvdcss and it needs raw access to the DVD drive to crack the encryption key. So with these drives it is impossible to circumvent the region protection. (This goes for all software. You will need to flash your drives firmware, but sometimes there is no alternate firmware available for your drive). On other RPC2 drives that DO allow raw access, it might take VLC a long time to crack the key. So just pop the disc in your drive and try it out, while you get a coffee. RPC1 drives should 'always' work regardless of the regioncode.

== Poor Quality Video and Audio ==

=== The video runs but the picture is distorted ===

{{faqlink|238431}}
* ''Linux:'' There is probably a problem with the output layer. There are several ways of troubleshooting it.
** First, try with another output plugin, for instance:
**: % vlc -V sdl
**: % vlc -V x11
** Second, change your screen depth and/or definition. It quite often helps.
** Lastly, if running Unix, have a look at your XFree86 video driver.

* ''Windows:'' See [[WindowsFAQ-1.1.x#Why_does_VLC_only_give_black.2C_white_or_garbled_.28or_other_visual_erros.29_video_output.3F]]

=== Video is choppy ===

{{faqlink|238474}}
* Your system may be too slow to decode all pictures. Sometimes, your CPU (computer) really isn't fast enough, but often the situation can be improved by changing your system configuration to be a bit kinder to VLC.
** Quit other programs running in the background
** Turn on DMA on your DVD device:
*** ''Linux:''
***: <nowiki>#</nowiki> hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd
*** ''Windows:'' go to the System section of the control panel, and go to the Hardware manager (it is sometimes in a separate tab, and sometimes, you have to go to the Advanced tab. Then, right-click on your DVD player, and check the DMA checkbox.
** Upgrade to the latest driver for your video board.
** ''Linux:'' you can additionally upgrade your drivers to the latest XFree86 version. If supported, check that the xvideo plug-in is effectively used with:
**: % vlc -vvvv

=== Audio and video are out of sync ===

{{faqlink|238571}}
* If you are [[transcoding]] a file, use the [[audio-sync]] option.
* You can manually set the audio offset while playing (so you can put the audio back in sync). The default keys to increase/decrease the offset are Ctrl+K and Ctrl+L in Windows, and f and g in Mac.
* ''Linux/Unix:'' Try using another audio output plugin and, under Unix, kill esd or artsd if they are running. If the problem is due to the input file, have a look at the "Audio desynchronization compensation" option.

=== Audio is choppy ===

* Reboot? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1288433
* Try a different codec if transcoding to ogg

== Problems with Streaming ==

==="main input error: no suitable access module for `rtsp://...'"===

vlc needs livemedia from '''live555.com''' to read rtsp stream this way.

You can check you have it by :

vlc -l | grep live

It should read

livedotcom            live.com (RTSP/RTP/SDP) demuxer
livedotcom            RTSP/RTP access and demux

If not, you have to install '''livemedia''' and point your compilation to this lib directory :

./configure '''--enable-livedotcom --with-livedotcom-tree=/usr/local/lib/live/'''

===Streaming playlist continuously between files (sout-keep not working)===

add the gather module to the sout chain, for example
vlc *mpeg --sout-keep --sout '#gather:transcode{plapla}:rtp{plapla}'

===Streaming 1 playlist item continuously and change input without stream break===

you can use this kind of a vlm.conf file with the --sout-keep option
new output1 broadcast enabled loop
setup output1 input "inputfile1.mpeg"
setup output1 input "inputfile2.mpeg"
setup output1 input "/path/to/inputfile3.mpeg"
setup output1 option sout-keep
setup output1 option input-repeat=-1
setup output1 output #gather:transcode{etc...}:std{plapla}

control output1 play 2

you then chan telnet into vlm and just command
control output1 play <playlistnumber>
to change the streamed input.

===Streaming to Windows Media Player===

See [[Windows Media Player]] for details.

== Problems converting between file formats (transcoding) ==

=== Missing Audio and/or Video ===

* Certain containers (aka muxers) can only hold certain types of video and audio - look at [[Transcode#Compatibility_issues]].

== Streaming/Transcoding Wizard ==

=== Transcode / Save to file ===

== VLC Crashes ==

=== General ===

{{faqlink|238592}}
* If VLC crashes, the following steps will help determine the cause.
** Increase the verbosity level (either in the preferences or with a -vvvv command line option) and look at the debug messages (in the terminal or in the Messages window).
* If you are convinced that it is a bug in VLC, have a look at the [http://www.videolan.org/support/bug-reporting.html bug reporting page].

=== When using DirectShow (eg Webcam) ===

{{forum|12394}}
* There was a bug a while back when you tried to stream using a directshow/webcam it would reboot the computer. The fix was to specify the resolution on the command line or in the "Advanced" section when opening the directshow.

== Other Problems ==

=== I only want one VLC player! ===

* To use the same VLC player for all the media files, go to Settings, Preferences, Advanced. The following options should give behavior similar to WMP: minimize # of threads, allow only one running instance, VLC is started from file association, allow only "on" running instance when started from file (typo in v0.8.5).

=== Licensing, legal issues and logo use ===

* Information on this is avaliable on the main videolan website, [http://videolan.org videolan.org]. Also read the [http://www.videolan.org/doc/faq/en/index.html#id238663 Legal concerns] section of the [http://www.videolan.org/doc/faq/en/index.html FAQ].
* This is a wiki site: it is editable by all, so it is best to check to official website.

=== Fixing Strange Behaviour ===

{{faqlink|238992}}
* The first thing to do is to reset the VLC preferences in the preferences dialog of the application and restart VLC. If VLC doesn't even start anymore, delete VLC's configuration file ([[#Configuration File|where is it?]]). Then restart VLC. If it does not get any better, read the rest of this page or FAQ page, or ask for help at the [[forum]].

=== Subtitles Problem ===

* In the File | Open File dialog, select "Use a subtitles file", and enter both the video's filename and the video's subtitle filename.
* If you are having displaying the subtitles, the problem might be an encoding problem. Choose the right encoding for your language and it should fix your problem. You'll find the ISOs here: [http://alis.isoc.org/codage/iso8859/jeuxiso.en.htm]. Once you find a text encoding method that works well for you enter it in Preferences, Input / Codecs, Other codecs, Subtitles then press Save and restart VLC. Uncheck the "Formatted Subtitles" may help if the subtitles only display as little squares. If you have a specialized language like Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese or Japanese changing the font to a Unicode font will be helpful. For Polish subtitles choose CP 1250 ISO code.

=== VLC hangs when opening Matroska (mkv) files ===

* This might occur when using VLC to view an mkv file in a directory that has a large number of mkv files. (eg. in an Azureus download directory)
VLC will attempt to preload all the mkv files in the directory and will hang, especially if some mkv files are not fully downloaded yet (thus seem to be broken).
* The solution is to set the mkv option: --mkv-preload-local-dir to false
Preferences -> Input / Codecs -> Demuxers -> Matroska -> Preload Directory (uncheck the checkbox)
(See also http://wiki.videolan.org/Matroska)

=== Coarse volume control ===

Volume control, specially with Hotkeys, is too coarse.
*To have a finer volume control, try the following option on the command line:
<code>--volume-step=1</code>

This page contains list of common questions and problems (FAQ aka Frequently asked questions) that [[Windows]] users have about [[VLC media player]] 1.1.x
For 0.8.6 check [[WindowsFAQ-0.8.x]], for 0.9.x check [[WindowsFAQ-0.9.x]] and for 1.0.x check [[WindowsFAQ-1.0.x]].

==Video output related questions and problems==
===Why does VLC only give black, white or garbled (or other visual errors) video output?===
Usually the problem lies in display adapter drivers. If you are too scared to update your display adapter drivers, you can change VLC settings to make video work. If you are using Windows XP or older the easiest fix is usually to disable '''Accelerated video output/Overlay video output''' which can be found first opening '''Tools -> Preferences''' and then choosing '''Video'''. After you have unticked the Accelerated video output, press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.
[http://koti.mbnet.fi/raiska/tutorials/vlc092/11a.png Image about Overlay video output setting]

If disabling Overlay video output doesn't help, then the next step is to change video output module. Open '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and then choosing '''Video -> Output module'''. There are multiple output modules you can use. For Windows XP and younger you can try '''DirectX 3D''', '''DirectX''', '''OpenGL''' and '''Windows GDI''' video output modules. With Windows Vista DirectX and Windows GDI output modules will disable Aero so if you want to use Aero, please use DirectX 3D (should be default). Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.
[http://koti.mbnet.fi/raiska/tutorials/vlc092/11b.png Image about video output modules setting]

===Video shows green, blue or red lines===
See above.

===How can I adjust brightness or contrast?===
You can adjust brightness, contrast and other settings via '''Extended settings'''. Open '''Tools -> Effects and Filter''' to adjust these settings ('''Video Effects -> Basic''' and tick '''Image adjust'''). Changes should show up realtime.

====How can I keep the brightness and contrast adjustments in memory forever?====
Open '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and then choosing '''Video -> Filters -> Image Adjust''' and set values you want to use (trial and error).

====Can I set file specific brightness or contrast?====
Yes, but it isn't that easy. You have to create VLC shortcut or bat file with proper settings. More info can be found from [http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=46202#p152964 this] thread

===How do I set the default deinterlace method?===
'''Tools -> Preferences''' (Show settings: All) '''Video -> Filters''' and tick '''Deinterlacing''' video filter from under '''Video output filter module''' (NOT FROM UNDER Video filter module!). Then '''Video -> Filters -> Deinterlace''' and choose the default mode. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

==Audio output related questions and problems==
===Crackles, pops, hizzes and other audio anomalies===
If you hear some unwanted audio problems you can try another audio output module to see if that solves the issue (Save and restart VLC after changes). Open '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and then choosing '''Audio -> Output module'''. There are multiple output modules you can use for audio. '''DirectX''', '''Win32 waveOut''' and '''Simple DirectMedia Layer''' should work in most cases. Unfortunately there isn't an ASIO support in VLC.
[http://koti.mbnet.fi/raiska/tutorials/vlc092/10b.png Image about audio output modules setting]

===Crackles, pops, hizzes and other audio anomalies with SPDIF passthrough===
SPDIF passthrough of Dolby Digital (AC3) and DTS audiotracks don't work with all soundcards. '''Win32 waveOut''' output module should work better with SPDIF.
===I don't hear dialog, conversations etc. while playing 5.1 audio===
Make sure you have select proper speaker setup from Windows audio settings or from soundcard control panel. If you have done so, make sure VLC also has right settings. '''Audio -> Audio Device''' to select proper speaker settings during playback.
===How do I adjust audio delay?===
During playback you can press '''k''' or '''j''' to adjust audio delay (adjust step is 50 ms).
===How can I play external audio track with video?===
'''Media -> Advanced Open File...''' and select the video file and after that tick '''Show more options''' and then '''Play another media synchronously...''' and select the audio file you want to use. Then when playing the video go to '''Audio -> Audio Track -> Track 2''' to select the second (or whichever it is) audio track (this so called Slave-mode doesn't work correctly).
===How do I change my output device in case I have multiple audio devices connected to my PC?===
Open '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and if you use DirectX, then '''Audio -> Output modules -> DirectX''' and '''Output device'''. If you use Waveout, then '''Audio -> Output modules -> WaveOut''' and '''Select Audio Device'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

==(Graphical) user interface related questions and problems==
===How can I separate playback controls from playback window?===
Go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Video''' and untick '''Embedded video''' selection. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

===How can I make skinned interface my default interface?===
Go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Interface -> Main interfaces''' and from '''Interface module''' dropdown box select '''Skinnable Interface'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.
[http://koti.mbnet.fi/raiska/tutorials/vlc092/20.png Image about Skinnable Interface setting]

===Can I jump to certain time?===
You can use '''--start-time''' from command line when you start VLC. There is also '''Playback -> Jump to Specific Time''' option in GUI.

===How can I change UI language?===
You can use '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Interface''' and select correct language from '''Language''' drop down list. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

Also you can use '''--language=''' from command line if you can't navigate with current language or you want to use batch files/scripts.
for example:
'''vlc --language=en''' to get English. Other options are auto, en, ar, pt_BR, en_GB, ca, zh_TW, cs, da, nl, fi, fr, gl, ka, de, he, hu, it, ja, ko, ms, oc, fa, pl, pt_PT, ro, ru, zh_CN, sr, sk, sl, es, sv, tr

===How can I disable fullscreen controller?===
You can use '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Interface -> Main interfaces -> Qt''' and untick '''Show a controller in fullscreen mode''' option.
[http://koti.mbnet.fi/raiska/tutorials/vlc092/25.png Image about fullscreen controller setting]

===Why doesn't the time slider show up?===
If you use WindowBlinds or similar custom skin engine, it usually breaks QT4 interface in VLC. So either disable that engine with VLC or change VLCs GUI to something else (like skins2).

===How can I disable showing of the filename when video starts?===
Go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Video''' and untick '''Show media title on video'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

===How do I disable showing of the Privacy and Network Policies dialog during first VLC startup?===
Launch VLC with '''--no-qt-privacy-ask''' command-line option.

===How do I disable pop up track notification shown in system tray (systray)?===
Go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Interface -> Main interfaces -> Qt''' then untick '''Show notification popup on track change'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

==Codec compatibility related questions and problems==
===How can I identify what codecs the file uses===
With VLC, Open the file you want and open '''Tools -> Codec Information'''.
===VLC doesn't identify used codecs correctly or gives "undf" as codec or I want more information about specs===
There are multiple video and audio identification tools, but one very useful is tool called [http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/ Mediainfo].
===H.264/MPEG-4 AVC playback is too slow===
You can speed up the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC playback by disabling loop filter for H.264 decoding. To do this go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Input / Codecs -> Other codecs -> FFmpeg''' and in the drop-down box for '''Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding''' change it to '''All'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

You can also try GPU based video decoding (works on NVIDIA Geforce 9xx0 and newer cards also on ATI Radeon HD 5xx0 and newer ones). You can enable it from '''Tools -> Preferences''' and '''Input & Codecs''' and tick '''Use GPU acceleration'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

===Problem with Real audio or Real video support===
Most Real audio or Real video should work with VLC 1.0.0, but if you have file that doesn't work then post thread to forums.
===Why can't VLC use CoreAVC, FFDshow, AC3filter, etc. codecs?===
VLC only uses built in codecs (see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player]) so it doesn't support VfW or DirectShow APIs for codecs.
You are free to hack the source and use it, though, for example it is possible to make VLC into a directshow filter [http://www.sensoray.com/support/videoLan.htm].

====But you support [[DMO]] (Direct Media Object) module for WMV video and WMA audio====
WMV and WMA are exceptions to this external codec support.

==File and media format compatibility related questions and problems==
===Some DVD movies don't work at all or they crash/freeze to menu or playback===
If you open DVD with '''DVD''' selection, try with '''No DVD menus''' option (aka '''dvdsimple''').

Some new DVD movies use copy protection mechanisms that VLC doesn't support. It might help if you rip that movie to hard drive using tools like '''DVDFab Decrypter''' or '''AnyDVD''' and use VLC to playback these files from hard drive.

===DVD movies don't playback smooth (they stutter, lag, etc.)===
One thing that might help is increasing the VLC DVD cache. This can be done from '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Input / Codecs -> Access Modules -> DVD with menus''' (or '''DVD without menus''' if you use dvdsimple method for playback) and increase '''Caching value in MS''' value to for example to 5000 or to 20000. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

If DVD files from hard drive work better, then check that your DVD drive has DMA enabled (if it is a IDE/ATAPI DVD drive).
===Can I play DVD files (VOB+IFO) from hard drive?===
Yes you can. Use '''Media -> Open Disc...''' and instead of DVD drive, point the location to correct folder by using either '''Browse...''' button or customize field . For example: '''dvd://"c:\movies\BLOOD DIAMOND\VIDEO_TS"'''
===How do I handle the broken AVI files?===
Some AVI files may give '''The AVI file is broken. Seeking not work correctly.Do you want to try to repair(this might take a long time)''' dialog. Those AVI files have some issues and you can try to fix those file temporarily with VLC or permanently with other tools. If you don't fix those files, seeking won't work correctly and those files may also crash players.
====Can I always perform same repair action?====
Yes you can. This can be done from '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Input / Codecs -> Demuxers -> AVI''' and select the wanted action from '''Force index creation''' dropdown box. '''Ask''' is default (it will always ask what you want to do). '''Always fix''' tries to always fix AVI files and '''Never fix''' always starts the playback without fixing. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.
====Can I fix those broken AVI files permanently?====
Yes. You can try for example [http://divfixpp.sourceforge.net DivFix++] or [http://www.virtualdub.org/ Virtualdub] for fixing. Virtualdub [http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=45427&p=143688&hilit=virtualdub#p143688 help].
====Can I fix those broken or partially downloaded Matroska/MKV files too?====
Yes. You can try [http://meteorite.sourceforge.net Meteorite] for fixing.
===Some MP4 or 3GP files don't have audio at all===
If those files have AMR audio (usually ones from mobile phones) they won't work with current stable VLC versions.

==Subtitles related questions and problems==
===How do I adjust subtitle delay?===
During playback you can press '''h''' or '''g''' to adjust subtitle delay (adjust step is 50 ms).
===How can I select right subtitle track?===
If your video has multiple subtitle tracks, you can select the one you would like to see from '''Video -> Subtitles Track'''.
===Can I disable hardcoded or "burned" subtitles with VLC?===
No.
===Can I change font, font size, style or color?===
You can with text-based subtitle formats ([[Subtitles codecs]]). Go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Video -> Subtitles/OSD -> Text renderer''' and adjust anything you want. '''Font size in pixels''' overrides '''Relative font size''' selection. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.
===How can I change subtitles text encoding?===
If you see wrong characters on screen or '''failed to convert subtitle encoding''' error message you should try to change '''Subtitles text encoding''' option which can be found from '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Input / Codecs -> Other codecs -> Subtitles'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.
===How can I select a Unicode font, so I can watch e.g. Chinese subtitles?===
Go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' (set Show Settings to All) and '''Video -> Subtitles/OSD''', then change the '''Text Rendering Module''' from '''Default''' to '''Freetype2 font renderer'''. After that go to '''Video -> Subtitles/OSD -> Text renderer''' and choose Unicode font (like '''Arial''') to '''Font'''. Remember to press '''Save''' to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

==General problems and issues==
===VLC crashes/freezes/BSODs my computer===
VLC doesn't do that. Normal apps shouldn't be able to cause issues like these to operating systems. Culprit is usually bad device driver (for example display adapter driver, soundcard driver, chipset driver, network adapter driver etc.) or broken hardware.
===How do I reset VLC settings?===
If you can start VLC, go to '''Tools -> Preferences''' and then press '''Reset Preferences''' and '''Save''' to reset and save VLC settings. Remember to restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

If you can't start VLC, go to '''%appdata%''' folder and delete '''vlc''' folder from there (Start -> run and type '''%appdata%\vlc''' there and press OK if you can't locate %appdata%).

Also start menu -> VideoLan -> "Reset VLC media preferences ..."

===VLC crashes on startup===
This usually happens because VLC setting files have been corrupted. Resetting VLC settings should fix this.
===I messed up my file associations or I want to modify them===
Please read [[Windows#How_to_associate_media_files_to_VLC|this documentation]] or reinstall VLC.

===Can VLC burn CD, DVD, HD DVD or Blu-ray discs?===
No.
===Is VLC legal in all countries?===
Probably not. Specially DeCSS module might violate DMCA (and similar laws) and some codecs would require licenses for personal/commercial use. There haven't been any court cases related to VLC but specially companies should make sure they pay license fees to license holders if they use VLC commercially and use patented formats or codecs.

===Can I run multiple VLC instances?===
Yes you can. Read [[How_to_play_multiple_instances_of_VLC|this documentation]].

===VLC 1.1.0 doesn't work with Windows Me/98/98se/95/NT===
This is by design. You need at least Windows 2000 to run latest VLC. For earlier Windows release, use VLC 0.8.6i
