MP4 (*'''.mp4''') is the global file extension for the official container format defined in the [[MPEG]]-4 standard [[ISO 14496-14]].
* '''.m4a''': introduced by Apple for aac/alac ''audio-only'' files.

NOTE: .m4a files can safely be renamed to .mp4 -- but the distinction between audio (m4a) and video (mp4) may be useful if you are going to share files, or if you tend to forget what files you have.

This area of the wiki contains a list with the possibilities [[VLC]] gives you. It was made to help people better realize the potential VLC has. Some entries will simply mention the possibility, others try to explain how to do it as well. Let me start by apologising for my horrible spelling, but I hope you will be able to decipher the texts anyway.

== Mediaplayer ==

=== Compact Disc (CD) Images ===
If you have a [[CD-DA]] (audio CD), [[SVCD]], or [[VCD]] packaged inside a CD-image, in some cases [[VLC media player]] can play this without you having to mount it or extract it. You can simply choose "open file" and pick the CD-image. For CD-image support vlc has to be [[compile]]d using [[libcdio]] (<tt>--enable-libcdio</tt>) and the various plugins which use libcdio need to be selected (<tt>--enable-cddax</tt>, <tt>--enable-vcdx</tt>). Some of these enablements may not be the default for your OS.

The kinds of Compact Disc formats supported are CDRWIN's BIN/CUE format, cdrdao's TOC format, and a limited set of Nero (NRG) formats.

(''[[libcdio]] also supports ISO-9660 image reading but at present there is no VLC access plugin which uses it. DVD's images follow the UDF format and at present there is no support in libcdio for that, although some limited progress has been made in that direction. It is possible that will get added in the future; volunteers are most welcome).

=== How to enable/use subtitles ===
Before you try to enable [[subtitle]]s make sure the subtitles you have are in a format that VLC can read! You can find the list of compatible subtitle formats [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html here].
If VLC has detected any sort of subtitles available, you will be able to turn them on under the menu: ''Video->Subtitles track->Track 1''

Auto detection of subtitle files uses a 'fuzzy' logic which you can specify. If this is wrongly specified you may end up with more subtitle file options than really exist or miss some that are provided. By default it allows any file in the right place which exactly matches the video name, and may have some extra characters. If you are not seeing the number of subtitle options you expect you might want to allow more 'fuzziness' by changing the preference in video/subtitles/subtitle autodetection where help is available if you 'hover' over the field.

If you mainly use .srt subtitles or .sub, you can get them turned on automatically when they are detected, by setting the ''Input/Codecs->Advanced->Choose subtitle track'' to 0, it will automatically turn on the subtitle track. You can also experiment with the ''Choose subtitle language'' on the same page. But if you experiment a bit with the settings you should be able to get subtitles turned on automatically.

'''Note:''' On Mac OS X, the "Video->Subtitles track" menu item is permanently disabled for some reason. You must manually specify the location of the subtitles file in the "Subpictures" pane of the preferences.

=== Playing windows media files ===
VLC should be able to succesfully play both audio and video in wma and wmv 1 and 2, for the newest version (wmv3) only the windows version of vlc will be able to play it, since no opensource implementation of wmv3 have been made so far, so the windows vlc plays it by using the windows api. DRM files however can not be played on any OS.

=== How to adjust picture brightness/colors/contrast.. ===
'''If you are using the wxwindows userinterface:'''
You can adjust the typical values to tweak the picture of your video source by turning on the extended GUI. This is done in the menu: ''Settings->Extended GUI''. That will give you some extended control options for the video picture as well as an equalizer for the audio. Before it actual works though, you have to enable the filters under the preferences->video

'''If you use Mac OS X or a skinned version of VLC:'''
You need to enter the preference menu: ''Settings->Preferences''. Once you have the preferences window open you go to: <u>Video->Filters->Image adjust</u>. Here you can adjust the different values. Note before they take effect you need to turn on the "Image adjust" filter in: <u>Video->Filters</u>

=== How to control the aspect ratio of the video ===
Using VLC, you can override the source aspect ratio. This is available both as a command line option and as an option in the Preference dialog in the graphical interface. The aspect ratio can be specified both in ratio format (16:9) or as a decimal number (1.33).

'''Command Line'''

When invoking VLC from the command line, use the option --aspect-ratio. For instance,

vlc --aspect-ratio 1.85

'''Graphical Interface'''

If using the graphical interface, the setting is In the Video section of the Preferences dialog. You may specify the aspect ratio in the field labeled "Source aspect ratio."

Here is a list of the more common aspect ratios.

* Fullscreen: 1.33 or 4:3
* Widescreen: 1.78 or 16:9
* Typical DVD: 1.85
* Cinemascope: 2.35

=== Announce whats playing to IRC ===
Announce the currently playing track to mirc (an irc client). This is often referred to as a "now playing" script. To be able to get this functionality with vlc one aproach would be to use the http interface. With it you can create a simple file which will display "'Artist' with the song 'Title' from the album 'Album' the genre is 'Genre'" on a page in ur browser. You can then pull that page from mirc with standard sockets and thereby use the text in a script in mirc. Below i will provide some VERY simple and very ugly examples on how you could use this. The examples are tested with vlc 0.8.5 and mirc 6.12. I cant guarantee the code work with any other versions (although it most likely will). Ok so here we go. You start with create a test.html file in the http interface directory (C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\http) inside this file paste the following to ONE line or it will not work:

<pre>
ANNOUNCE <vlc id="value" param1="'ARTIST' vlc_get_meta"/>
with the song <vlc id="value" param1="'TITLE' vlc_get_meta"/>
from the album <vlc id="value" param1="'ALBUM' vlc_get_meta"/>
, The genre is <vlc id="value" param1="'Genre' vlc_get_meta"/>
</pre>

Remember to leave an empty line behind the actual line of code, vlc/mirc seems to want this.
Then you must create a script in mirc under remote (alt+r) and paste in the following:

<pre>
alias now {
sockopen vlc_meta_info 127.0.0.1 8082
}

on *:SOCKOPEN:vlc_meta_info: {
sockwrite -n $sockname GET /test.html HTTP/1.1
sockwrite -n $sockname Host: localhost
;sockwrite -n $sockname Connection: Keep-Alive
sockwrite -n $sockname $crlf
sockwrite -n $sockname $null
}

on *:sockread:vlc_meta_info: {
if ($sockerr > 0) return
:nextread
sockread %temp
if ($sockbr == 0) return
if (%temp == $null) %temp = ---
if (ANNOUNCE isin %temp) {
%temp = $remove(%temp,ANNOUNCE )
describe $active is listening to %temp
}
goto nextread

sockclose vlc_meta_info
}
</pre>

Only things u might want to change is the port the http interface listens on, thats the first line and is port 8082 in my case. You might also want some other text than "is listening to" just change as you see fit.

Thats poretty much it. You should enable the http interface in vlc by default if u wanna use this on a regular basis. This is done under preferences in "Interface->Main interfaces"

Then with all thisa done (and vlc restarted) you can type /now in mirc and it will display ur currently playing track.

This was made for mp3 tracks, so if it doesnt work with other types of media let me know.
== Streaming - client ==

=== Listen to online radio ===
You can of course always simply find a link to a radiostream and then open it as you would any other network stream in VLC. But if you would like to browse a list of online radios, you can try the list of shoutcast radio stations VLC can download for you. First you need top open the playlist window: View->Playlist. Once you have the playlist window open chose: ''Manage->Service discovery->Shoutcast radio listings''. After 10 seconds or so the playlist should have become populated by radio station entries. You obviously require internet access for this to work! If you want the stations sorted alphabetically, you can chose: ''Sort->Sort by title''. Also note shoutcast have many thousands stream availeble, per default in 0.8.2 250 stations are downloaded, this can be changed in the preferences under: <u>Playlist->Service discovery->Shoutcast</u>. Note that the more stations u want to add, the longer delay u will see when the station list is downloaded parsed and added to the playlist. Also note you should see 2 "Folder nodes" in the playlist under shoutcast called Genres and bitrate where the stations will be listed under their respective areas. Note that most stations claim to be multi genre, so a station might be listed under both Top40, pop and rock.

== Streaming - server ==

=== VLM ===

The VLM is the Video On Demand part of the VLC streaming server features. It lets u setup a bunch of entries and then let users ask for those streams and it then gives them to the users, it has A LOT of possibilities and i will try to cover them all here.

You can devide VLM entries into 2 general categories VOD and broadcast entries.

Gniw: /* Completely non-interactive transcoding */

Transcoding is the process of taking a video file and changing it to a different format or bitrate.

Transcoding in VLC copies the movie to a new file in a different format, so you end up with both the original and new files. This means you need to have enough space on your hard drive to store this extra file. You should also have a reasonably fast computer, as transcoding can be very slow.

In VLC, transcoding is exactly the same as [[streaming]] accross a network, except that the output is sent to a file instead of a network.

== Transcoding with the Wizard ==

VLC includes a transcoding and streaming wizard. To transcode a file, just select the transcode option. You will then be asked what format to convert to: you can give a video [[codec]], and audio codec and an [[encapsulation]] format. Only some encapsulation formats can support some codecs - look [http://www.videolan.org/streaming/features.html here] to see what supportes what.

{{doc|http://www.videolan.org/doc/streaming-howto/en/ch02.html}}

== Transcoding with the Command Prompt ==

The most flexible way to transcode with vlc is using a [[command prompt]] to start vlc. Transcoding works the same as [[streaming]]. For example, the following command changes an [[asf]] file to an [[MPEG-2]] file:
:vlc "C:\Movies\Your File.asf" :sout='#transcode{vcodec=mp2v,vb=4096,acodec=mp2a,ab=192,scale=1,channels=2,deinterlace,audio-sync}:std{access=file, mux=ps,url="C:\Movies\Your File Output.ps.mpg"}'
The access=file instructs vlc to store the output in a file (and not stream it), and the url is the location of the new (output) file.

(Note: If you are running VLC on [[Mac OS X]], you should use clivlc instead of VLC to avoid possible Bus error problems.)

Transcoding takes quite a while, so it's advisable to use an option like '''--stop-time=30''' to only encode the first 30 seconds - this means you can check the file has transcoded correctly, and that the output is of a suitable quality.

The transcode statement can contain '''vcodec''' and '''vb''' to change the video codec and '''acodec''' and '''ab''' to change the audio codec. If vcodec is missing, the video codec will stay the same (same for acodec).

Common additional options to use are '''audio-sync''' (to make sure the audio is in sync correctly) and '''deinterlace''' (to increase quality slightly on interlaced video).

===Completely non-interactive transcoding===
For completely non-interactive transcoding (such as the case necessary when running under [[Mac OS X]]), the above example could be rewritten as
:vlc -I dummy "C:\Movies\Your File.asf" :sout='#transcode{vcodec=mp2v,vb=4096,acodec=mp2a,ab=192,scale=1,channels=2,deinterlace,audio-sync}:std{access=file, mux=ps,url="C:\Movies\Your File Output.ps.mpg"}' vlc:quit
The two extra options are
;-I dummy: Disables the graphical interface
;<nowiki>vlc:quit</nowiki>: Quit VLC after transcoding
If transcoding from a DVD, it is also necessary to use the dvdsimple:// notation instead of the dvd:// notation, in order to avoid interacting with the DVD menu system (which is quite impossible without the graphical interface).

===Completely non-interactive transcoding===
Note that you can replace the "VLC" at the end of the path with "clivlc" to suppress the launch of any Mac-like interface. VLC won't even appear in the Dock then.
be detected as such. And even if the stream
is not actually encoded with Dolby Surround,
turning on this option might enhance your
Fullscreen video output (default disabled)
If this option is enabled, VLC will always
--aspect-ratio <string>    Source aspect ratio
This will force the source aspect ratio. For
instance, some DVDs claim to be 16:9 while
they are actually 4:3. This can also be used
as a hint for VLC when a movie does not have
aspect ratio information. Accepted formats
are x:y (4:3, 16:9, etc.) expressing the
Increasing the priority of the process will
very likely improve your playing experience
as it allows VLC not to be disturbed by other
applications that could otherwise take too
much processor time. However be advised that
in certain circumstances (bugs) VLC could
take all the processor time and render the
When this is active, VLC will keep playing
Hurry up (default disabled)
Allow the decoder to partially decode or skip
frame(s) when there is not enough time. It's
useful with low CPU power but it can produce
distorted pictures. (default disabled)
--ffmpeg-pp-q <integer>    Post processing quality
Quality of post processing. Valid range is 0
to 6
Higher levels require considerable more
CPU power, but produce better looking
pictures.
--sout-ffmpeg-hq {rd,bits,simple}
Quality level
Allows you to specify the quality level for
the encoding of motions vectors (this can
slow down the encoding very much).
--sout-ffmpeg-keyint <integer>
that will be coded for one key frame.
--sout-ffmpeg-bframes <integer>
Ratio of B frames
Allows you to specify the number of B frames
that will be coded between two reference
frames.
--sout-ffmpeg-hurry-up, --no-sout-ffmpeg-hurry-up
Hurry up (default disabled)
Allows you to specify if the encoder should
make on-the-fly quality tradeoffs if your CPU
can't keep up with the encoding rate. It will
disable trellis quantization, then the rate
distortion of motion vectors (hq), and raise
the noise reduction threshold to ease the
encoder's task. (default disabled)

MPEG2 video switcher stream output
enabled)
Dynamic range compression makes the loud
sounds softer, and the soft sounds louder, so
you can more easily listen to the stream in a
noisy environment without disturbing anyone.
If you disable the dynamic range compression
the playback will be more adapted to a movie
theater or a listening room. (default enabled)
Specify a comma seperated list of file
extensions. Files with these extensions will
not be added to playlist when opening a
directory. This is useful if you add
will be used (and its associated options).
--sout-transcode-scodec <string>
Destination subtitles codec
This is the subtitles coded that will be used.
--sout-transcode-soverlay, --no-sout-transcode-soverlay
Destination subtitles codec (default disabled)
This is the subtitles coded that will be
used. (default disabled)
--sout-transcode-sfilter <string>
Overlays
This allows you to add overlays (also known
as "subpictures" on the transcoded video
stream. The subpictures produced by the
filters will be overlayed directly onto the
video. You must specify a comma-separated
list of subpicture modules
--sout-transcode-osd, --no-sout-transcode-osd
Formatted Subtitles (default enabled)
Some subtitle formats allow for text
formatting. VLC partly implements this, but
you can choose to disable all formatting.
(default enabled)
Allows you to specify a quality between 1
(low) and 10 (high), instead of specifying a
particular bitrate. This will produce a VBR
stream.

Time display sub filter
--time-position {0 (Center), 1 (Left), 2 (Right), 4 (Top), 8 (Bottom), 5 (Top-Left), 6 (Top-Right), 9 (Bottom-Left), 10 (Bottom-Right)}
(high) and 50.0 (low), instead of specifying
a particular bitrate. This will produce a VBR
stream.
--sout-twolame-mode {0 (Stereo), 1 (Dual mono), 2 (Joint stereo)}
Allows you to specify a quality between 1
(low) and 10 (high), instead of specifying a
particular bitrate. This will produce a VBR
stream.
--sout-vorbis-max-bitrate <integer>
Element aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of the individual displays
building the display wall

wxWidgets interface module
--wx-embed, --no-wx-embed Embed video in interface (default enabled)
Embed the video inside the interface instead
of having it in a separate window. (default
enabled)
--wx-bookmarks, --no-wx-bookmarks
--wx-extended, --no-wx-extended
Show extended GUI (default disabled)
Show extended GUI (default disabled)
--wx-playlist-view {0 (Normal), 1 (Embedded), 2 (Both)}
Playlist view
There are two possible playlist views in the
interface : the normal playlist (separate
window), or an embedded playlist (within the
main interface, but with less features. You
can select which one will be available on the
toolbar (or both).
--wx-systray, --no-wx-systray
Show systray icon (default disabled)
Show systray icon (default disabled)

H.264/MPEG4 AVC encoder (using x264 library)
--sout-x264-keyint <integer>
Maximum GOP size
Sets maximum interval between
IDR-frames.Larger values save bits, thus
improve quality for a given bitrate at the
cost of seeking precision.
--sout-x264-min-keyint <integer>
Minimum GOP size
Sets minimum interval between IDR-frames. In
H.264, I-frames do not necessarily bound a
closed GOP because it is allowable for a
P-frame to be predicted from more frames than
just the one frame before it (also see
frameref). Therefore, I-frames are not
necessarily seekable. IDR-Frames restrict
subsequent P-frames from referring to any
frame prior to the IDR-Frame.
If scenecuts
appear within this interval, they are still
encoded as I-frames, but do not start a new
GOP.
--sout-x264-scenecut <integer>
How aggressively to insert extra I-frames (-1
to 100)
Scene-cut detection. Controls how
aggressively to insert extra I-frames. With
small values of scenecut, the codec often has
to force an I-frame when it would exceed
keyint. Good values of scenecut may find a
better location for the I-frame. Large values
use more I-frames than necessary, thus
wasting bits. -1 disables scene-cut
detection, so I-frames are be inserted only
every other keyint frames, which probably
leads to ugly encoding artifacts.
--sout-x264-bframes <integer>
Number of B-frames between I and P (1 to 16)
Number of consecutive B-frames between I and
P-frames.
--sout-x264-b-adapt, --no-sout-x264-b-adapt
Adaptive B-frame decision (default enabled)
If this is on, the specified number of
consecutive B-frames will always be used,
except possibly before an I-frame. (default
enabled)
--sout-x264-b-bias <integer>
Influences how often B-frames are used
Bias the choice to use B-frames. Positive
values cause more B-frames, negative values
cause less B-frames.
--sout-x264-bpyramid, --no-sout-x264-bpyramid
Keep some B-frames as references (default
disabled)
Allows B-frames to be used as references for
predicting other frames. Keeps the middle of
2+ consecutive B-frames as a reference, and
reorders frame appropriately. (default
disabled)
--sout-x264-cabac, --no-sout-x264-cabac
CABAC (default enabled)
CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic
Coding). Slightly slows down encoding and
decoding, but should save 10-15% bitrate.
(default enabled)
--sout-x264-ref <integer>  Number of reference frames (1 to 16)
Number of previous frames used as predictors.
This is effective in Anime, but seems to make
little difference in live-action source
material. Some decoders are unable to deal
with large frameref values.
