VLC supports skins (sometimes also called themes) through its skins2 interface module. To get new skins go to the Skins website.

The steps mentioned here apply to VLC 0.9 and upward.

Skins are not available on Mac OS X.

If you do have problems with VLC after applying a skin, a reinstall is NOT necessary. See How do I fix VLC when it does not anymore show up properly.

How to switch to the Skins interface
In order that you can use skins you have to change from VLC's native interface to the skinnable one. You can do that by opening the preferences and choosing Skins as the Interface type. Then click the Save button and restart VLC. It should then show up in the default skin.

http://images.videolan.org/images/wiki/open_preferences.jpg http://images.videolan.org/images/wiki/enable_skins2.jpg

or use command-line to start VLC with skins interface

vlc -I skins2

How to get new skins and where to save them
You can download a variety of skins from the Skins website. They usually should come as files with the extension "VLT". Although your browser or operating system might identify them as archive files, don't unpack them. Rather put them as they are into the skins folder of VLC.

On Windows this folder is located in the installation directory of VLC,
:e.g. C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\skins.

On Linux/Unix it is located in
:~/.local/share/vlc/skins2.

If you downloaded the skin pack just unpack it to the folders mentioned above.

Warning: Not all of the skins available for download are fully functional.

How to change to another skin
To change to a downloaded skin, right-click anywhere on the skin's background and choose Interface.
Then chose either Select skin to change to a skin that is located in the default skin folder of VLC or Open skin to open a skin file that is located elsewhere.

http://images.videolan.org/images/wiki/change_skin.jpg

How to switch back to VLC's default interface
When you open VLC and the skin you chose appears, right-click somewhere on the skins background and then choose Interface and Preferences (also accessible by pressing Ctrl+P). In the preferences dialog change the Interface type to Native. Then click save and restart VLC. It should show up in its default interface.

How do I fix VLC when it does not anymore show up properly
If you chose a broken skin it might happen that VLC does not anymore show up properly and that you cannot anymore access the settings as mentioned above.

Then you have to switch back to the default interface.

On Windows you can just open your Start menu and open

:All programs > VideoLAN > Quick Settings > Interface > Set Main Interface to Qt (default)

On any other system, or when the start menu entry is missing, run VLC with the following command line:

vlc -I qt

Now that VLC has been started with its native interface you can open the preferences (Ctrl+P) and change the active skin file. Chose the default skin or a skin you know that works. Then again set the skin interface to be the default one and restart VLC.

Are there skins with a full screen controller?
Full screen controllers in skins are supported since VLC 1.1. But apart from the default skin coming with VLC not many other skins have this feature.

How to create your own skin
There exists a program that enables you to create skins without any deep knowledge how skins are made up exactly. It is the VLC Skin Editor

If you'd rather want to explore all the possibilities of the skin system and get to know how skins are made up and how to create them in detail, check out the Skins2 documentation.

How to change to another skin
To change to a downloaded skin, right-click anywhere on the skin's background and choose Interface.
Then chose either Change skin to change to a skin that is located in the default skin folder of VLC or Open skin to open a skin file that is located elsewhere.

How to create your own skin
Altglass: its "exaggerated" with two gs

VLC for Mac death is "greatly exaggerated" / What is Lunettes?
VLC for Mac is being maintained. However the old Cocoa graphical interface of VLC, is not being maintained at this time.

The reason is that we are in the process of rewriting a new interface for VLC. Its codename is Lunettes.

Why a rewrite? This is something really easy to see. VLC for Mac is just not "Mac" enough.

So far, we could name 3 reasons for that:

<h2>VLC for Mac must attract designers.</h2>

They can't easily give a refresh of the graphical interface.

Hence, we have decided to offer to designer the possibility to edit via a simple text file the look of VLC. Even Windows and Fullscreen Head-Up-Display can be changed using CSS.

<br>

<h2>VLC for Mac's interface code comes from the 2000s. </h2>

We need to refresh it.

We want to use VLCKit which is pure Cocoa, Objective-C 2.0 with bindings supports. This will help us concentrating on features.

As a positive side effects, we'll not use old non-64 bits compatible APIs.

<br>

<h2> VLC for Mac need a good interface to be the best Video Player. </h2>

We want to make sure you'll get the best experience ever when watching your favorites TV shows or Movies using VLC.

*For instance, if I am watching a TV show, and then quit Lunettes. At next launch Lunettes will offer you to go back to where you were.

*Then, we added a better way to visualize the media discovery. This is a seldom known feature of VLC. Now, if you are on a local network that streams TV content (Freebox), Lunettes will automatically show them.

*Then the famous playlist fades out: It is not visible by default, and you don't have to use it anymore.

*Also in fullscreen you can now scroll through your playlists or TV channels.

*And finally Lunettes is 64 bits.

<br>

For now, Lunettes is being hosted at: http://wiki.github.com/pdherbemont/Glasses

That said, Lunettes is still under heavy development. And we hope to be able to release a test version in January.

We still want new developers to help us! Try to build VLC and Lunettes!

On Windows this folder is located in the installation directory of VLC, e.g. C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\skins.

On Linux it is located in ~/.local/share/vlc/skins2.

If you downloaded the skin pack just unpack it to the folders mentioned above.

How to change to another skin
To change to a downloaded skin, right-click anywhere on the skin's background and choose Interface.
Then chose either Change skin to change to a skin that is located in the default skin folder of VLC or Open skin to open a skin file that is located elsewhere.

How to switch back to VLC's default interface
When you open VLC and the skin you chose appears, right-click somewhere on the skins background and then choose Interface and Preferences (also accessible by simply pushing Ctrl+P). In the preferences dialog change the Interface type to Native. Then click save and restart VLC. It should show up in its default interface.

If that didn't help or you can't access the preferences in the skin you use, start VLC from the command line with -i qt4 as parameter. That should start VLC with its native interface.

Makes it possible to stream a playlist without any noticeable interruption on input change on the client side.
The audio and video streams must all have the same characteristics (codecs, bitrate, dimensions, etc.).

Example
% vlc playlist.m3u --sout "#gather:std{access=http,mux=asfh,dst=:8080}" --sout-keep

If your playlist items use different codecs or have different sizes, it is advised to transcode. For example:
% vlc playlist.m3u --sout "#transcode{vcodec=DIV3,vb=512,width=640,height=480,acodec=mp3,ab=128,samplerate=44100,channels=2}:gather:std{access=http,mux=asfh,dst=:8080}" --sout-keep

WAVE is a way of storing audio, which is normally uncompressed. It is based on RIFF.

Accepted audio codecs
* dummy: Uncompressed audio of various types, based on storing integer values of the amplitude of the sound (see PCM).
* fl32: Floating point 32-bit uncompressed audio, also based on PCM but allowing the values to be stored as floating point data types. This can give better quality audio when the sound becomes quiet.

Converting to WAVE
The commandline for converting any readable input file to a WAVE audio file is the following:

<span style="color:grey">vlc</span> -I dummy -vvv <span style="color:green">"input.mp3"</span> --sout=#transcode{acodec=<span style="color:red">fl32</span>,channels=2,ab=<span style="color:purple">128</span>}:standard{access=file,mux=wav,dst=<span style="color:blue">"output.wav"</span>} vlc:quit

Where on Windows you need to add installation directory in front of <span style="color:grey">vlc</span> (e.g. "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\<span style="color:grey">vlc</span>").

As <span style="color:red">audio codec (acodec)</span> you can specify one of the above mentioned ones. The bitrate of the output file is specified by the <span style="color:purple">ab</span> parameter.

:Update is a button I use now to force synchronisation between the state in the core and in the interface in extended dialog/synchronisation. Down arrow is used for a button that has a drop-down menu for more options. jb
Reaction on the proposal
I like the black eject, the black extended and the black and white playlist. DVD next, prev, menu too.

However, on all of those, the borders are too wide. see playlist.png for reference on that.

Fullscreen is too confusing,

A->B(I like the last one the best), snapshots are good, but we may need more than one for AtoB...

About the play button, I don't know yet, but I kind of like the idea of MPRIS http://wiki.xmms2.xmms.se/index.php/MPRIS

jb 18:05, 19 April 2008 (CEST)
::The borders are 1px wide, so physically seen I can't get any smaller. I could although reduce the size of some icons .
::Comparison:
:::http://d-gfx.kognetwork.ch/VLC/qtimageset/eject_dark.png http://d-gfx.kognetwork.ch/VLC/qtimageset/eject_smaller.png
:::http://d-gfx.kognetwork.ch/VLC/qtimageset/extended_dark.png http://d-gfx.kognetwork.ch/VLC/qtimageset/extended_smaller.png

::DVD actions are already quite small, excepts the menu icon #1. What do you think?

::Concerning the MPRIS play button. Do you like the blue color, or what do you specifically like about it?
WAVE is a way of storing audio, which is normally uncompressed. It is based on RIFF.

Accepted audio codecs
* dummy: Uncompressed audio of various types, based on storing integer values of the amplitude of the sound (see PCM).
* fl32: Floating point 32-bit uncompressed audio, also based on PCM but allowing the values to be stored as floating point data types. This can give better quality audio when the sound becomes quiet.

Altglass: /* In the Skin Editor program */ mockup

Designing Process
First of all you have to design your skin in a graphics program like Photoshop or GIMP.

In the designing process you should think of the following components:

:A main window containing:
::a play/pause button
::a next and a previous button
::a faster and a slower button
::a stop button
::a time slider
::a volume slider
::a mute button
::text information about the current playback
::other buttons with specific functions like shuffle,repeat or making other windows and dialogs visible
:A playlist window. Either integrate this into the main window or create a separate window for it. The playlist window should contain:
::a button to add and a button to remove items from the playlist
::a button to export and to import playlist files
::a button to sort the playlist alphabetically
:An equalizer window. This might also be included into the main window or elsewhere. This window should contain:
::A slider to control the preamplification
::10 sliders to control the different bands (60Hz, 170Hz, 310Hz, 600Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz, 6kHz, 12kHz, 14kHz, 16kHz)
::A button to turn the equalizer on/off

When you create your skin also consider that each control/button has three states: normal, mouseover and clicked.

For example you could create a big image for each window, where the window with it's controls is shown three times. One for each status. Then it is recommended that you split up this image with slices. (Slices refer to a tool in Photoshop, I don't know how or whether at all this is possible in GIMP or other programs). Then save each slice, or subimage, as a PNG file.

http://d-gfx.kognetwork.ch/VLC/skineditor/airflow_slices.png

Example of how your image document could look like. The red lines indicate the slices

In the Skin Editor program
Choose to create a new skin and save it in it's own folder. Into this folder you should copy all your PNG images.
Then you have to make the available in the skin by clicking on the Add Bitmap button at the bottom of the Resources window.
Select the PNG files in the file chooser. They will be added automatically as bitmap resources and identified by their file names without the extension.

Then create a new window by clicking on the Add Window button at the bottom of the Windows window.
Choose an id for the window, e.g. "Main" if it is the main window. The X and Y attributes determine where the window appears the first time the skin is opened.
If you set drag-drop to true, files can be dropped into this window and will be added to the playlist. If play on drop is true the dropped files will be played immediately after they have been dropped into the window, otherwise the will be just added to the end of the playlist.

Now you'll have to add a layout to the window. Layouts determine different appearances of a window. For simple skins there are only needed on layout per window. Note that if you use several layouts, the last in the list will be shown the first time the skin is opened. You can modify the position of a layout in the hierarchy by selecting it an using the up and down buttons at the bottom of the Windows window.
You'll have to choose an id for the layout, you should always select ids that represent what is displayed. Under initial width and height you have to enter the dimensions of the window when this layout is displayed. If your window is not resizable you can ignore the other attributes and leave them at -1.

After you have added the layout it should be selected in the Windows window and a preview window of your layout should have opened to the right. It should be filled with a gray/white tile pattern. This pattern symbolizes transparency, so the parts of your layout where you see this pattern will not be visible in VLC.

Now move on to the Items Window.

All images making up this window but should not trigger any action are represented by "Image" items.
Normally a layout has at least one image item that represents the window's background.
For each slice of the window that should not have any function, click on the "Add Item" button at the bottom of the Items Window and choose Image.
Enter any ID that you feel comfortable with, just note that IDs must be unique. Set the image attribute to the id of the bitmap resource representing this image. Set the X and Y attributes to the position where the image should appear. After having added the image you can also move it around with the cursor if you have selected in the "Items" window. The currently selected item is highlighted in the preview window by a red border.
By default the action attribute of an image is set to move. This enables the user to drag the window around by clicking on the image. You can disable this by selecting the action none.

Controls that do not change their appearance when a certain status changed are represented by Button items.
You should use buttons e.g. for the controls to skip to the next/previous item in the playlist etc. For the Play/Pause button you should rather select a checkbox, which are considered later on.

Now let us consider the button's attributes:

For the up attribute choose the bitmap resource representing the image of the buttons default state.
For the hover attribute choose the bitmap resource representing the image of the buttons state when the mouse is over it.
For the down attribute choose the bitmap resource representing the image of the buttons state when it is pressed.
The action that should be fired by clicking on the button can be defined with the help of the ActionEditor which can be opened by clicking on the button next to the action-textfield.

Checkboxes are similar to buttons only that they have two states.
You can choose a boolean variable from to set the condition of the checkbox. You have to enter for both states, if the condition resolves to true or to false, the up,hover and down bitmap resources.

To edit the skin's settings like author etc. choose Edit>Theme Information from the menubar.

This should be enough as a brief introduction to the usage of the skin editor. For more advanced usage view the Skin2 Documentation. There the Playtree, Video and other items are described in detail. You can ignore the XML part as all the XML work is done by the editor.

When you finished your skin choose File>Export as VLT and email the generated VLT file to vlc at videolan dot org or post it in the forums so that it will be added to the skins download page.

Designing Process
First of all you have to design your skin in a graphics program like Photoshop or GIMP.

In the designing process you should think of the following components:

:A main window containing:
::a play/pause button
::a next and a previous button
::a faster and a slower button
::a stop button
::a time slider
::a volume slider
::a mute button
::text information about the current playback
::other buttons with specific functions like shuffle,repeat or making other windows and dialogs visible
:A playlist window. Either integrate this into the main window or create a separate window for it. The playlist window should contain:
::a button to add and a button to remove items from the playlist
::a button to export and to import playlist files
::a button to sort the playlist alphabetically
:An equalizer window. This might also be included into the main window or elsewhere. This window should contain:
::A slider to control the preamplification
::10 sliders to control the different bands (60Hz, 170Hz, 310Hz, 600Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz, 6kHz, 12kHz, 14kHz, 16kHz)

TODO: Add an example PSD file, maybe of the Airflow skin and describe how to design a window if it should be resizable

In the Skin Editor program
Choose to create a new skin and save it in it's own folder. Into this folder you should copy all your PNG images.
Then you have to make the available in the skin by clicking on the "Add Bitmap" button at the bottom of the "Resources" window.
Select the PNG files in the file chooser. They will be added automatically as bitmap resources and identified by their file names without the extension.

Then create a new window by clicking on the "Add Window" button at the bottom of the "Windows" window.

You can modify the position of a layout in the hierarchy by selecting it an using the up and down buttons at the bottom of the "Windows" window.
You'll have to choose an id for the layout, you should always select ids that represent what is displayed. Under initial width and height you have to enter the dimensions of the window when this layout is displayed. If your window is not resizable you can ignore the other attributes and leave them at -1.

After you have added the layout it should be selected in the "Windows" window and a preview window of your layout should have opened to the right. It should be filled with a gray/white tile pattern. This pattern symbolizes transparency, so the parts of your layout where you see this pattern will not be visible in VLC.

Now move on to the "Items" Window.

All images making up this window but should not trigger any action are represented by "Image" items.
Normally a layout has at least one image item that represents the window's background.
For each slice of the window that should not have any function, click on the "Add Item" button at the bottom of the "Items" Window and choose "Image".
Enter any ID that you feel comfortable with, just note that ID's must be unique. Set the image attribute to the id of the bitmap resource representing this image. Set the X and Y attributes to the position where the image should appear. After having added the image you can also move it around with the cursor if you have selected in the "Items" window. The currently selected item is highlighted in the preview window by a red border.
By default the "action" attribute of an image is set to "move". This enables the user to drag the window around by clicking on the image. You can disable this by selecting the action "none".

Controls that do not change their appearance when a certain status changed are represented by "Button" items.
You should use buttons e.g. for the controls to skip to the next/previous item in the playlist etc. For the Play/Pause button you should rather select a checkbox, which are considered later on.
For the up attribute choose the bitmap resource representing the image of the buttons default state.
For the hover attribute choose the bitmap resource representing the image of the buttons state when the mouse is over it.
For the down attribute choose the bitmap resource representing the image of the buttons state when it is pressed.
The action that should be fired by clicking on the button must be chosen from the list at . In later versions of the Skin Editor (probably v.0.5) there will also exist an action editor.

Checkboxes are similar to buttons only that they have two states.
You can choose a boolean variable from to set the condition of the checkbox. You have to enter for both states, if the condition resolves to true or to false, the up,hover and down bitmap resources.

This should be enough as a brief introduction to the usage of the skin editor. For more advanced usage view the Skins2 Documentation at . There the Playtree, Video and other items are described in detail. You can ignore the XML part as all the XML work is done by the editor. To edit the skin's settings like author etc. choose Edit>Theme Information from the menubar.

When you finished your skin choose File>Export as VLT and email the generated VLT file to vlc at videolan dot org or post it in the forums so that it will be added to the skins download page.

First of all you have to design your skin in a graphics program like Photoshop or GIMP.

In the designing process you should think of the following components:

:A main window containing:
::a play/pause button
::a next and a previous button
::a faster and a slower button
::a stop button
::a time slider
::a volume slider
::a mute button
::text information about the current playback
::other buttons with specific functions like shuffle,repeat or making other windows and dialogs visible
:A playlist window. Either integrate this into the main window or create a separate window for it. The playlist window should contain:
::a button to add and a button to remove items from the playlist
::a button to export and to import playlist files
::a button to sort the playlist alphabetically
:An equalizer window. This might also be included into the main window or elsewhere. This window should contain:
::A slider to control the preamplification
::10 sliders to control the different bands (60Hz, 170Hz, 310Hz, 600Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz, 6kHz, 12kHz, 14kHz, 16kHz)

You can choose a boolean variable from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skins2-create.html#boolexpr to set the condition of the checkbox. You have to enter for both states, if the condition resolves to true or to false, the up,hover and down bitmap resources.
