Keyboard Shortcuts
You can find most of the keyboard shortcuts by taking a look at the menus. Additional hotkeys are defined in the section "Hotkeys" of your VLC preferences.

Some handy key combo's are:

* You can use the spacebar to start/pause the video.
* When playing video, holding down the Apple key and pressing the F key enters and exits fullscreen. When in fullscreen you can also use the escape key to exit the fullscreen state.
* When playing video, holding the Apple and Shift keys and pressing the left/right arrow keys, jumps the video backward/forward about a minute.
* When playing video, holding the Apple and Ctrl keys and pressing the left/right arrow keys, jumps the video backward/forward about ten seconds.
* When you are watching a DVD and the video window is the front-most window you can use the arrow keys and the enter key to navigate the DVD menus.

Streaming Wizard
A streaming wizard is available since the VLC media player 0.8.4 release.

Command line
You can run VLC on Mac OS X using a terminal application (for example Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities) with the following command: ./VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC [your options, "--intf=rc" for example].

No Dock
Note that you can replace the "VLC" at the end of the path with "clivlc" to suppress the launch of any Mac-like interface.
VLC won't even appear in the Dock then.

When transcoding, clivlc should be used if running VLC from the command line crashes with a Bus error.

Compile VLC on BeOS

Required tools
You need :
* BeOS 5 with development tools
* CVS 1.11
* Subversion
* bzip2/bunzip2
* wget
* gcc 2.95.3

Compiling is usually done on a vanilla R5.0.3 install with gcc 2.95.3.

Building with older compilers won't work.

Building on a BONE-enabled install probably doesn't work at the moment.

Build VLC
Now you can compile vlc:

Get the source
Download the VLC source code (using subversion) as described on the "Get the source" page.

Build external libs
We now need to build the 3rd party libs. For that, you will need to:
* cd to the source directory with your Terminal application.
* cd to extras/contrib/ subdir of VLC and execute <code>./bootstrap</code>
* Now execute <code>make src</code>. This will download and compile all the required external libraries and programs that VLC needs (you need an internet connection, a fast one preferably).

Prepare the VLC build
Now we return to VLC itself. Go back to the top level VLC source directory. If you use Subversion (which you really should), then run <code>./bootstrap</code>.

This will create configure and Makefiles for VLC (snapshots and releases already include this).

Configure VLC
The next step is to configure, in the top level VLC source directory.

<code>./configure --enable-debug --enable-sout --enable-httpd --enable-vlm --enable-dvdread --enable-dvdnav --enable-dvbpsi --enable-screen --enable-ogg --enable-mkv --enable-mad --enable-ffmpeg --enable-faad --enable-a52 --enable-flac --enable-libmpeg2 --enable-vorbis --enable-speex --enable-theora --enable-freetype --enable-fribidi --disable-skins2 --with-ffmpeg-mp3lame --with-ffmpeg-faac --with-ffmpeg-zlib --disable-x11 --disable-hal --disable-daap --disable-xvideo --disable-glx --disable-sdl --disable-wxwindows</code>

Build VLC
After configure is finished, we can finally build VLC. A simple <code>make</code> will do the trick.

To build a package, run <code>make package-beos</code>.
Listing the interfaces available
There are some other interfaces, you can view the list by running VLC with the -l option:
vlc -l
This also displays the muxers and encoders/decoders. On linux, run
vlc -l | grep -i interface
to display the interfaces.

Using an interface
To run VLC with a different primary interface, use the following command:
vlc --intf name
You can also use
vlc -I name
You can also change the default in the Preferences.

However you can also launch more than one interface:
vlc --intf wx --extraintf sap,telnet,http
This will launch VLC with the default wxWidgets interface, but will also launch the sap, telnet and web interface in addition to the wxWidgets one. The default for this can also be changed in the Preferences.

Note that if you only use the dummy interface, you won't be able to tell vlc to quit - you may have to break it manually with Ctrl+C; or use vlc:quit as the last item on the playlist.

AlistairMcMillan: Make link direct. And move link to first instance.

VLC mosaic howto
This is a small example about how to use VLC media player to create a mosaic. What we basically want is a video mosaic mixing 3 video channels (channels 1, 2 and 3) on a background image (background.png) and streaming the resulting video on the network. Note that we will also be streaming the 3 sound tracks from channels 1, 2 and 3 in the same mpeg-ts stream.

Starting with VLC 0.8.5-test2, the http interface features a "Mosaic wizard". You might want to use it if you have no knowledge of VLC command line usage.

http://people.via.ecp.fr/~dionoea/videolan/mosaic1.png

Other neat examples :

12 video mosaic

20 video mosaic

20 video mosaic

Step 0
Read the VLC streaming howto (chapters 3 and 5 concerning command line and vlm usage in VLC) : http://videolan.org/doc/

Step 1
Get VLC 0.8.4-test1 or newer and install it on your computer.

Step 2
You now have to get a background image. Many image formats are supported (JPEG, PNG ...).

You can also test it with VLC to see if it displays locally :
<pre>
./vlc --fake-file background.png --fake-aspect-ratio "4:3" fake:
</pre>

Step 3
You now need to configure VLC to get the 3 source streams and blend them on the background image.

The vlm configuration file looks like :

<pre>
new channel1 broadcast enabled
setup channel1 input udp://@239.255.2.60:1234
setup channel1 output #duplicate{dst=mosaic-bridge{id=1,height=144,width=180},select=video,dst=bridge-out{id=1},select=audio}

new channel2 broadcast enabled
setup channel2 input udp://@239.255.10.200:1234
setup channel2 output #duplicate{dst=mosaic-bridge{id=2,height=144,width=180},select=video,dst=bridge-out{id=2},select=audio}

new channel3 broadcast enabled
setup channel3 input udp://@239.255.6.9:1234
setup channel3 output #duplicate{dst=mosaic-bridge{id=3,height=144,width=180},select=video,dst=bridge-out{id=3},select=audio}

new background broadcast enabled
setup background input fake:
setup background output #transcode{sfilter=mosaic,vcodec=mp2v,vb=10000,scale=1}:bridge-in{delay=400,id-offset=100}:standard{access=udp,mux=ts,url=239.255.12.42,sap,name="mosaic"}

control background play
control channel1 play
control channel2 play
control channel3 play
</pre>

Note that the source streams are network streams, which is likely to be the case if you're considering doing a mosaic.

Step 4
And now, the right command to launch vlc :

They began writing VLS (VideoLAN Server) and the VLC (VideoLAN Client) to stream and read MPEG2 streams. They succeeded in serving and reading the first stream in 1998. This allowed easy porting of the OS specific modules.
In 2001, after many months (if not years) of negotiation, the school's Director agreed to a change to the GPL licence. The first large scale multicast streaming tests occurred in May 2002. 500 students on the VIA Centrale Réseaux network were able to participate in these tests. In January 2003, the first MPEG4 streams were tested and realtime MPEG4 encoding was available two months later.
A CD or Compact Disc is a circular disk with a silver look to it.

Audio CDs
Audio CDs contain audio data, and can be read by a CD player. Any CD marked with the CDDA mark can be played in any player also marked with a CDDA mark.

Audio CDs can be played with VLC media player if you have a CD drive on your PC. After inserting the CD, run VLC and select Open Disc from the File menu. Then click on the Audio CD option and press OK. If you prefer, you can use the command prompt to run an audio CD:
vlc cdda://D:
vlc cdda:///dev/cdrom
Where D: (windows) or /dev/cdrom (linux) is the location of your CD drive. To play a single track, append an @ followed by the track number. For example, to play track 3, type
vlc cdda://D:@3

Audio CDs contain uncompressed lossless audio, which takes up a lot of space on the disk but is very good quality. The format for this is stereo audio in 44100Hz 16-bit PCM WAV format.

Module options
* --cdda-caching (integer)
*: Caching value, in milliseconds
* --cdda-track (integer)
*: The track to play. This is equivalent to appending "@track" to the URL. Default value is -1, for playing all tracks.
* --cdda-first-sector (integer)
* --cdda-last-sector (integer)
*: The first and last sectors of the CD to check.check
* --cddb-server (string)
* --cddb-port (integer)
*: Location of the CDDB server to use. Default is "freedb.freedb.org" on port 8880

Data CDs
Data CDs contain programs or files which can be read by your PC - you can only use these with your PC.

CDs can also contain other data and program code. When you insert a CD in some versions of Windows, programs on the CD may run without asking you first - you may wish to turn off autorun or hold the shift key when inserting a CD to stop this happening.

Playing media files on a data CD
You can play files from a data CD, in exactly the same way as playing them from your hard drive (note: Linux users will need to mount the CD drive first).

See the file access module for details of playing files from your computer.

CDs with both audio and data (Mixed CDs)
Mixed CDs contain both audio and data, for example a CD may come with a music video as a "bonus feature". The data part (such as the music video) can only be used on your PC, but the audio is able to be played on your PC or CD player.

Some mixed CDs come with programs which will try to install copy protection on your computer - see 2005 Sony BMG CD copy protection scandal.

To play the audio CD part, follow the instructions for an audio CD. To play files on the data CD part, follow the instructions for a data CD.
There are several record companies who do not use DRM on their music. This means that it can be played in any media player, including VLC! Some of these are listed below, (see also wikipedia):
* Magnatune
* Onclassical
* Comfort Stand Recordings

Creative Commons
Some people release media files under creative commons licenses, which are normally free and allow you to copy the files to your friends. These files are also DRM-free. Some creative commons sites are listed below:
* Creative Commons
* ccMixter
Play from a CD
VLC can play from CDs. To make sure your CD can be played anywhere, make sure it carries the CDDA logo.
This works fine in graphedit - I get MPEG video and audio this way."

Quality Assurance
This section of this wiki is about helping to increase the quality of different versions of VideoLAN's products, and mainly VLC media player.

Why this page ?
Main idea
There is not much yet on this page, but the idea is to develop test protocols, regroup test files, and at the end improve the whole quality of VLC, to avoid regressions and check roadmaps.

Who is concerned
The community of VideoLAN's numerous users and developers can enforce the project by doing systematic tests and report bugs and regressions. Some projects rely on a lot of external code that evolves a lot. Being numerous can help to make it better.

Bugs
The bugs should be tracked down and killed using trac

Why should you get involved ?
The more we are, the more bugs are spotted, the best VLC is !
Easy, ain't it ?

So if you help, everyone will be a winner.

How can you get involved ?
Use this talk page or contact; for a start User_talk:J-b (this will change).
Then, just run the tests and modify this wiki's pages.

Bug reporting
Use trac to do these.

Urgent
* Prepare the tests for VLC 0.8.6
* Gather original and references video and audio files

VLC
Motto: Let's improve VLC !!!

Tests to run
You want to help testing VLC ? There are a few tests that you can handle:
* VLC functionnality tests
* VLC playback tests
* VLC transcode and streaming tests

Files
This is an easy TODO: we have to get or link to the best files we can, that VLC should be able to read.
Those files should be references files for each codec, and files that combines codecs.

Where to search:
* VLC streams FTP
* MPlayer's FTP
* References codecs pages usually, linking to those should be enough...
* Files you did.

Versions roadmaps
Deprecated, old projects and libraries
* VLS is a streaming server, used for professional streaming solutions. VLC can now do the same. Please use VLC.
* VLCS, the mini VideoLAN Channel Server, can tell the client what is the multicast address associated to a channel.
