Two-factor authentication (2FA) is required for all accounts on the GitLab instance at code.videolan.org. There are plans to soften this requirement, for users who only wish to report a bug in particular: see the upstream GitLab ticket at <insert ticket URL here>
Help, I'm blocked by this 2FA page, I don't know what 2FA is and I don't care, I don't have any 2FA device nor even a smartphone, I just want to start using GitLab!
Follow this simple solution:
- Install the
oathtool
package on your computer. - The 2FA page generates a key for you to use: copy-paste it from the text block on the right of the QR code, and save it into a private file on your computer, for example
~/code.v.o-2fa-key
Don't lose this key or let others access it, this will be what authenticates you. - Run the command
oathtool --totp -b - < ~/code.v.o-2fa-key
and enter the code it generates to register on the 2FA page, and then whenever you log in and get prompted for it.
