VLC as a replacement to Windows MediaCenter
From VideoLAN Wiki
Currently, Microsoft in its great wisdom has no support and looks to not be incorporating any support for MediaCenter on Windows Home Server. Also, MediaCenter's inability to store non-DRM content from Cable begs to question how hard is it to get what you want in this world?
Concept:
* A closet with a couple digital cable boxes that support 1394
* A PC with WHS (Windows Home Server) on it, and a firewire port, and VLC
* Several PCs and/or MediaCenter extenders in the house that can
1. connect to the Server
2. retrieve live and recorded content on it (live via multicast)
3. modify the scheduled recordings
Server Build:
(This is not finalized yet, so please be patient if it doesn't work)
1. Install VLC (I'm still using 8.6i and will continue until I have a working
prototype as this seems to be a bit more stable than the 9.x binary when it
comes to video capture from DirectShow.)
2. Install Timmoore's and Exdeus' firestb driver packages and executables.
I put the exdeus drives in the timmoore folder under a subfolder labeled
exdeus-drivers.
3. Update Tuner FriendlyName in Windows Registry.
4. Install MCEServe.
