Why isn't VLC supported on my computer!?

Well actually this is quite simple. Probably because no one in our team has such a computer to actually create a version of VLC for that type of computer. But to be more specific, here are some reasons.

WindowsCE
A beta version for this OS is available now. You can find it here for now.
MacOS 9
OS9 will never be supported. It's archaic, we have chosen to focus on Mac OS X.
PalmOS
lacks a lot of features needed by VLC.
OS/2
It's archaic, old, dead (but you are welcome to try to port it)

Why don't you support every codec ever!?

VLC uses open source decoders to play lots of different types of codec. If there isn't an open source decoder out there, VLC won't support it.

To make a codec decoder, you need to know how the codec works. If the owner of the codec doesn't release the codec's specification, then to support it, you'd need to reverse engineer the codec - this is tricky and time consuming, and the VLC team doesn't normally do it. If you ask them, they'll probably tell you to do it yourself.

Some common codecs that aren't supported are...

Indeo Video 4.0, 5.0
Indeo version 1-3 are supported. Ligos haven't released the specs to version 4 or 5, and there's no open source decoder.
Windows Media Video 3, aka Windows Media 9
Is unsupported in any VLC release prior to 0.8.6. Thanks to ffmpeg's Summer of Code, that version finally added playback support on all platforms. Note that you still can't play encrypted / DRM-protected wmv-clips with VLC on any OS. This is not about to change, so please don't ask.
